I really don't know how to feel about this. On one hand it probably would be a useful tool for many who feel addicted to overeating. On the other, OMG WTH has the world come to?!?!
Why can't we just stop eating too much?

"To place the device, a surgeon makes a tiny incision and endoscopically puts a tube in the patient’s stomach, which is attached to a “disk-shaped port that lies outside the body,” according to the statement. To drain the contents of the stomach, a person should wait twenty or thirty minutes after they eat, and then attach an external connector to the port and open the valve."
oh my gawd! They should go the whole hog and turn it into an anaerobic digester with a USB port so you can charge you phone.31 -
So, it's basically automated bulimia? OK, then.65

No one makes any money off of eating less.16

That would explain why companies don't want us to eat less, but not why we don't.12 -
*some* eating disorder patients have been doing this for years with feeding tubes. The FDA is behind the times3

This is scary. Automated bulimia is probably one way of describing it, but to have to go to a lavatory and physically flush my stomach contents down a toilet would probably cause me to vomit anyway, so that's a waste of time.
There was a program on TV not long ago that featured a man who had one of these devices. It made me nauseous then, and it still does.19 -

OP I am sort of on the fence about this right now! I am shocked that you can now just empty contents of the stomach on the go per se!
Seeing that stuff dump in to the toilet is just nasty. just nasty! Bulimia pump.. wow!
I will have to come back later to this thread after I have had time to digest this.. no pun intended...10 -
People with eating disorders will love to get this.
You can eat and eat, then just purge it in a toilet by a tube.
... not the solution.
What happens when the system is removed. Back to square one.
Horrible. Would teach nothing about eating less or nutrition.16 -
How do you develop healthier habits with this device? According to the article it says you will.4

We're not expected too. We're encouraged to eat all of the time and even told it's dangerous to go too long without eating. Every common sense food rule we've ever had as a society has been refuted by "science" and labeled nonsense and eroded by food advertising.
And anything not labeled nonsense or dangerous is deemed too hard, unsustainable deprivation that will ultimately fail.11 -
"According to the FDA, patients may experience stomach pain, irritation, potential leakage, bleeding, and infection to name a few."
i had a friend who used to binge and purge, but the thing is that he was quite slender - only he felt he was overweight. with something like this i believe he would have starved himself to death.4 -
I'd rather take Alli. That thread will poop pop up.
After one year they lost 12% of body weight. What a joke.4 -

I'm not sure what the thinking behind it is. Maybe that seeing that chewed partially digested food will be disgusting enough to make you stop overeating??4 -

Nailed it!! partially digested food would be totally gross!!2 -
So basically it is a PEG tube but in reverse?
I can see this becoming a huge issue, especially for those with a history of bulimia. HBO did a special years ago called "Thin" about residential eating disorder treatment. One of the women had a PEG tube and used it to stay under 90lbs!
What on earth was the FDA thinking?1 -

It seems they considered this. It says the device stops working after 115 cycles to force patients to follow-up with a doctor.0
