Thanks @Stoshew71 as far as I know hey have clocks at 5 and 10 miles. Other than that there's no info.
I'll be using my Garmin, which I have set to alert each mile, to help me wih pace. I have instant, lap and average pace on it, along with elapsed time and distance.0 -
Also, at every mile mark (at least if it is a good race) there will either be a clock and/or a timer person calling out times. That is the overall gun time elapse. Again, assuming your golden pace to be around 10:15, you want to be close to that mile marker with the clock or person calling out "10:15". But if it is more than 10:15, it's because your pace was slowed for that first mile due to congestion. So, the next mile mark, your goal is to be closer to 20:30
mile 3 closer to 30:45
mile 4 closer to 41:00
It's like the Price Is Right, get as close to those times without going over.
You hear so much about runner's math. LOL These are one of the many calculations they are trying to figure out in their head. Problem is, as the race wears on, these claculations become harder and harder to do. So they make a cheat pace bracelet that you can download and wear around your wrist:
http://www.runnersworld.com/pace-calculators/pace-wristband-creator
http://www.marathonguide.com/fitnesscalcs/PaceBandCreator.cfm
This way, every time you hit a mile mark, you look at your wrist and see the time you are supposed to hit. This takes calculating paces in your head no longer a worry (when at mile 6 you are thinking to yourself what is 15 plus 15 again?) it is perfectly normal to forget simple arithmetic in the middle of a race. ;-)
Don't forget to look at the clock as you pass the start line so that you know how far off your time is from the clocks on the course, as they will be in sync with the gun time. Depending on the size of the race, I have been off by as much as 30 minutes with wave starts. Also, I have noticed as more and more people are using GPSs for races, the number of clocks on the course have started to dwindle. It used to be that almost every race had a clock at each mile marker, now I see them more and more at specific splits like every 5K or 10K.3 -
@greenolivetree have yourself a rest day sounds like you need it. I get that way about running in the morning sometimes. I wake up wanting to live in another neighborhood cause I'm bored. I do have the ability to run a while in another direction and loop back around so that is good.
@stoshew71 love the wristband idea how cool is that. I'm always the one trying to do the mental math.1 -
Those wristbands are pretty cool. I might have to see about making one to help me keep on track0

@skippygirlsmom I probably shouldn't be bored with my town because I have multiple routes and I've even run 7 miles without repeating a single street except my own. LOL But I think I'm really missing the trails vs neighborhood streets. But with school out I don't have a reason to drive to the next town and time driving is time not running. But I'm hoping this weekend I can take some time to get out for some change of scenery.
I'm still feeling rather poopy today but still tossing the idea of finishing my run tonight and then of course tomorrow would be rest.

After thinking about it, I'm leaning toward taking tomorrow off from running, I'll probably end up walking somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 miles, while pushing a stroller anyway. My problem is I have this darn nagging part of me saying that Thursday is a run day, and I shouldn't skip a run...However, the thought of four days of "rest," meaning just walking, would leave me fresher for the race....stupid tapering, if this was a full mileage week, I'd just skip tomorrow with no guilt.......OCD tendencies suck
Edit: looks like the naughty word filter isn't working.....
Edit #2: My wife rocks....we don't have a printer at home, so she printed off a 2:17:00 pace wristband for me at work! I was going to have her do a 2:15:00, but the difference is only 10 seconds/mile and I think 2:17 is a reasonable goal, so it shouldn't be TOO hard to figure from there.....I can write the 2:15 numbers in as well, if I get really anal about it....5 -
