@vandinem Congratulations! So happy that others get so much out of this group too!

@Stoshew71 You gotta be proud to help so many find their inner runner. So many thanks!

It is a pretty awesome feeling. But I'm just paying it forward.

But to be honest, this group would not be as successful without all of you guys.

    @vandinem Great report!

So.....local running store is doing their annual blowout sale with $40 shoes. I DO NOT NEED SHOES. :'(>:):*

I know nothing of tapering but I know injury healing and I'd say it's kind of similar, especially wondering if you ever even were a runner ;)
@greenolivetree that is exactly how I feel. Suffering from un-planned month long Zero Running Taper Crazies.

    exercise.png
    06/01 – 4.0 Km – 4.0 - 136 km – 614.2 km
    06/02 –5.0 Km – 9.0 - 131 km – 619.2 km :s Injured - Badly Torn Calf muscle at the ligament junction just below the knee. :s:'(

So I missed my goal by just a smidge:smirk:
Curse the injury bug. It is still nigglely and I have done three "Test' runs the first one was 20 seconds, 2nd 35 seconds and the last one was 58 seconds before I dropped back to a walk. Feeling better but just don't want to push myself into a re-occurring injury cycle. Lots of walking and swimming in June. Tried biking but it didn't feel right so parked the bike. If I do a standard Calf Stretch I can feel a small piece of extreme tightness about the size of a Golf Ball at the top of the Calf on the Outside edge of my leg and that is where it starts to hurt and tighten up when I try to run. On day 1 of my injury this extended across the whole width of my leg.

Kept my motivation/inspiration up by trying to stay active on the forum and reading everyone race reports. See you all in July. My July starts with a week out of town for work assignment, really hope I can get in some small runs ( 1 - 3 km ) as where I am going has amazing scenery similar to that posted by @ddmom0811 of her Banff Vacation.

Since we are on the subject of Garmins, how many of you have the optical heart rate monitor and what model is it? How accurate do you believe it to be compared to a chest strap? Dcrainmaker's review of it was pretty favorable (I think it was the review of the 230 that I read but it's been a while), but I have heard otherwise by at least one person.

I got the first one they released with optical heart rate monitoring - the 225, which they licensed the MIO sensor for. I'd say on my radial pulse (turned around - so the sensor & watch face is on the underside of my wrist), it is about accurate for me about 90-95% of the time, but still struggles in cool dry weather. On the back of my wrist, it is closer to about 70%. Still, no idea how good their own sensor works (on the 235/735XT/Fenix 3 HR). Although I'd love some of the extra features they added to the 235 (bike mode, phone notifications, VO2 max, LT measurement, return to home), for the extra $100 (as you can get the 225 for $215 vs. $340 for the 235), I'm not sure it would have been worth it.

@vandinem - Congrads on sticking with running for a full year! To answer your question, I'm in both locations, but I'll just swap icons based on if I'm back on the beach or up north.

June total to date – 130.81

Nominal Challenge Goal – 100 miles
Real Goals: Recover from injury to the point where running feels normal again. Stretch goal, recover to the point where I can run at race pace.

Today's notes – Beat the nominal mileage goal, which I set at a lowbar, easy to achieve level. Got to where running feels normal again for the last few days. What with one thing and another, didn't test race pace this month; I don't think I'm quite there yet, but I'm close.

After yesterday's cautiously aborted run, this evening I went to the club. Ran the warmup, decided in advance I'm still not up to drills and that Tuesday was enough speed work for this week. Set out with some slower runners, having the half-baked idea of somehow enduring their easy pace, then running somewhere between my easy and my MP for their T pace. One woman was running ahead. "She's doing a different workout, at MP." "What's her MP?" "About 8." "Maybe I can run with her."

So I caught up, and ran most of 3 miles with her at her MP, toward the fast end of my easy. At 3 miles, she slowed down for her next interval, and I turned around to go back. Finished a full 6 miles (after the 2+ mile warmup) right at a 7:59 pace on mostly easy terrain. There was a bit of muttering from my right leg, but nothing serious. I think I'm back to running 5 days a week now.

Going forward, I have to work in the office 4 days a week during July and August. I'm thinking I'll take Thursday as my work at home day, do my only speed work of the week on Thursday evenings, and take Fridays as a rest day. See how well I survive trying to run 150 to 200 miles per month when I can't work at home 3 days a week any more, but the major thrust of training is just building miles.

    2016 races:
January 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY) finished in 53:58
January 9, 2016 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Gates, NY) finished in 1:30:59

April 18, 2016 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA) finished in 3:23:01
April 24, 2016 Flower City Challenge Half Marathon (Rochester, NY) finished in 1:36:50, targeting MP

A bit short of my goal this month, but for the best! I took yesterday off to let my hip feel better (and it did) and get lots of packing done (which I did), and then I only got to do part of my group run tonight due to moving difficulties. So this will be a "cutback" week, which I need, but is prompted by life stuff.

But I am now totally moved out of my old university apartment and I am moving into a 2 month house-share sublet tomorrow! Crashing at a running buddy's tonight (who lives upstairs from my old place, so half my crap is in her living room because it doesn't all fit in my little Honda Civic!) and then I get FIVE DAYS OFF to settle in to the new house. So exciting! Will hit that 200 mile marker in July no doubt! Bring it on!

7/9: Belmar 5 miler (Belmar, NJ)
9/11: Lehigh Valley Via Marathon (Allentown, PA)

    6/17...6 miles
    6/18...9 miles

Total is 62.4 miles...so met goal for June....still pretty tired on those last 3 miles. However I was at the gym for an hour prior doing squats and lunges...May increase long run to 10 miles next month. No hip soreness, thankfully. My feet felt tired.

    Races :
6/11 Run and Ride 5K Cedar Point - Done
    7/10 Debbie Hudacko 5 mile ?
    10/8 Outdoor Trail Series 5 mile #1
    11/5 Outdoor Trail Series 5 mile #2
    12/3 Outdoor Trail Series 5 mile #3
12/11 Santa Hustle Half Marathon Cedar Point

Kind of random, but definitely running related: How was the Run and Ride 5K at Cedar Point? I'd like to run that next year if I can make it work. I am overdue for a Cedar Point visit!

It was insanely hot this year, it was my second time doing it. The 5k sold out so it was packed but overall well run with a tiered start and 1 water stop that you hit in both directions. Last year they had 450 starters, this year there was about 1800 racers just in the 5K. I will do it again next year but either do the 5k and 10k or the half. I wish they would do something like Disney does with a challenge if you do more then 1 race but still it is a good time with a great atmosphere.

Good to know. Thanks for the info! I had wanted to do it last year, but already had a vacation planned for somewhere else when I found out about it, and this year, I had wedding to attend, so I couldn't make it, either. That is crazy that it went from 450 people to 1800 in only one year!

June 22- 4.5 miles AM run
    June 23- 4.8 miles + 1.1 miles with puppy
    June 24- 4.4 miles 8X1 minute hill sprints-ugh, I hate this workout!
    June 25- 11.5 miles

    June 28- 3 .4 miles AM+ 6 miles PM with fast finish last 2 @ 7:40,7:30
    June 29-5.3 miles AM
    June 30-5.1 miles- speed work

Last night's run was speed work. the run was supposed to be 7X2 minutes in zone 4/2 minutes zone 1. I think I ran my fast segments too fast. Ended up in zone 5 on all but the first one. Trying to figure out if this is a bad thing or not. I think the problem might be in that I never really got back to zone 1 on my recoveries. I think I need to either focus on slowing my speed segments or else walking for my recovery.

At any rate, I finished June at 156.8 miles. Since I had no real goal set, I guess I should be happy that I was able to get out there willingly most days, enjoyed most of my runs, and I got off to a really good start with my training plan for my fall half. We will see how it goes from here. See you all in the July thread!

    Nice speed workout :)

    If only my husband agreed!

Well, you could try telling your husband that you will need new shoes at some point as you get your miles in & wear out the current ones...and since shoes are on sale now, and they don't expire or anything like fresh food would, if you do purchase them now and save them for later you're really saving money by not having to buy them at regular price when you inevitably wear out your current ones...even if you wear both the new & old ones right now you're still saving money because you're extending the life of your old shoes by not wearing them as often...

    ...just sayin'...

I am kind of that way with running socks. I like my feet to feel good, not as pricey as shoes, but still pricey (for socks). I probably buy a pair or two after every expo.

@greenolivetree There's an article in this month's Runner's World that said runners who cycle shoes are less injury prone. So one pair of shoes is one doctor-ish visit, right? Seems like an inevitable expensive.

Just read that article...I knew there was a reason, other than compulsion, that I have 5 pairs of runners
