I am not sure if the "Auto-Detect" feature is enabled by default, in which case it won't automatically figure it out whenever it has all of the right data on a run to calculate this. You can also do a guided test by going to the Run menu and pressing the hamburger then going to My Stats->Lactate Threshold->Do Guided Test.
I do not know the details of the algorithm, I think there is a white paper where you can read more details about it.
It has only auto-detected for me on a 5k PR attempt, then a recent 4x5 minute LT effort run (based on the LT reported from the 5k) and then again today doing 20 minutes at LT effort.
LT is not a feature on the 220, unfortunetely. :-(
This is a new feature with the 630:

Since we are on the subject of Garmins, how many of you have the optical heart rate monitor and what model is it? How accurate do you believe it to be compared to a chest strap? Dcrainmaker's review of it was pretty favorable (I think it was the review of the 230 that I read but it's been a while), but I have heard otherwise by at least one person.0

Finished for the month with a short run today (didn't have time for the long run I planned) Really annoyed that I managed to leave it at 59.95 miles because I did my maths wrong and have only just realised when I added it up. If I run 0.05 around my living room it counts as 60, right?!

LOL @MNLittleFinn I took a rest day yesterday so I missed out on a few. Great work!0 -
Oh, never mind, Nike+ thinks I ran 60.8 this month. Must have gotten my maths wrong at some point. Oh well, at least I don't have that stupid 0.05 bugging me2

@greenolivetree I fell on a bright & early group run on Monday. I was running close to these tiny trees that line the street, and a squirrel and I startled each other, and I tripped over a sidewalk crack jumping away from the lunging squirrel. I didn't get banged up too bad though because I almost caught myself mid-fall, but then lost my balance.
:-o Last week a Canadian goose and I startled each other. I saw it and incorrectly assumed it was aware of me. So right as I ran by it flapped and honked and I jumped I generally just run right by them because they live on my street.

@lporter229 my husband has the 230. He likes the optical HRM. But he never wore the chest strap. So I can't say how it compares. He does like it. He's not a data nerd though...0

I am finally back - can't believe it has been 2 weeks already, though! I got in some great runs in Seattle and in Klamath Falls. The hills in Klamath Falls were much worse than I was expecting and I found the elevation there left me out of breath and my legs feeling like logs. The cold mornings and beautiful scenery got me out the door though as often as I could around family obligations.
I haven't read all the updates and feel I missed out on a lot that was going on! I hope to catch up at least a bit tomorrow even if I can't comment on everything. I am off to my first strength training session in over 2 weeks followed by Rally class with Hobbes the Vizsla (who traveled VERY well amazingly!).
I didn't make my goal but I did break 100 so I will just have to be good with that!

Passed my extended goal of 100 miles for June!
This also completes my first year of MFP Running, after opting in to Stan's Challenge Invitation for July 2015. In that year I've covered over 1,100 miles and dropped 25 pounds.
My running issue prior to this was always burnout ... run hard for a couple months and then quit. So I'm happy, amazed, and thankful for the motivation and support this Virtual Team has given me.
And besides my own running progress, I love checking in on my running network from Melbourne Down Under, to Minnesota, Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, UK (East and West!), home town Pittsburgh (or is it Florida?), France (almost Switzerland), Alabama, Nebraska, Ireland (a cherished land for Bostonians), Nevada, New Jersey, Romania, Bulgaria, and many other Running Meccas ... it is truly an International sport!
So many thanks to Stan and everyone in my Virtual Running Club, and I hope we have many more miles to come!

It is a pretty awesome feeling. But I'm just paying it forward.
But to be honest, this group would not be as successful without all of you guys.4 -

06/02 –5.0 Km – 9.0 - 131 km – 619.2 km Injured - Badly Torn Calf muscle at the ligament junction just below the knee.
So I missed my goal by just a smidge
Curse the injury bug. It is still nigglely and I have done three "Test' runs the first one was 20 seconds, 2nd 35 seconds and the last one was 58 seconds before I dropped back to a walk. Feeling better but just don't want to push myself into a re-occurring injury cycle. Lots of walking and swimming in June. Tried biking but it didn't feel right so parked the bike. If I do a standard Calf Stretch I can feel a small piece of extreme tightness about the size of a Golf Ball at the top of the Calf on the Outside edge of my leg and that is where it starts to hurt and tighten up when I try to run. On day 1 of my injury this extended across the whole width of my leg.
Kept my motivation/inspiration up by trying to stay active on the forum and reading everyone race reports. See you all in July. My July starts with a week out of town for work assignment, really hope I can get in some small runs ( 1 - 3 km ) as where I am going has amazing scenery similar to that posted by @ddmom0811 of her Banff Vacation.4 -

I got the first one they released with optical heart rate monitoring - the 225, which they licensed the MIO sensor for. I'd say on my radial pulse (turned around - so the sensor & watch face is on the underside of my wrist), it is about accurate for me about 90-95% of the time, but still struggles in cool dry weather. On the back of my wrist, it is closer to about 70%. Still, no idea how good their own sensor works (on the 235/735XT/Fenix 3 HR). Although I'd love some of the extra features they added to the 235 (bike mode, phone notifications, VO2 max, LT measurement, return to home), for the extra $100 (as you can get the 225 for $215 vs. $340 for the 235), I'm not sure it would have been worth it.
@vandinem - Congrads on sticking with running for a full year! To answer your question, I'm in both locations, but I'll just swap icons based on if I'm back on the beach or up north.2 -

Nominal Challenge Goal – 100 miles
Real Goals: Recover from injury to the point where running feels normal again. Stretch goal, recover to the point where I can run at race pace.
Today's notes – Beat the nominal mileage goal, which I set at a lowbar, easy to achieve level. Got to where running feels normal again for the last few days. What with one thing and another, didn't test race pace this month; I don't think I'm quite there yet, but I'm close.
After yesterday's cautiously aborted run, this evening I went to the club. Ran the warmup, decided in advance I'm still not up to drills and that Tuesday was enough speed work for this week. Set out with some slower runners, having the half-baked idea of somehow enduring their easy pace, then running somewhere between my easy and my MP for their T pace. One woman was running ahead. "She's doing a different workout, at MP." "What's her MP?" "About 8." "Maybe I can run with her."
So I caught up, and ran most of 3 miles with her at her MP, toward the fast end of my easy. At 3 miles, she slowed down for her next interval, and I turned around to go back. Finished a full 6 miles (after the 2+ mile warmup) right at a 7:59 pace on mostly easy terrain. There was a bit of muttering from my right leg, but nothing serious. I think I'm back to running 5 days a week now.
Going forward, I have to work in the office 4 days a week during July and August. I'm thinking I'll take Thursday as my work at home day, do my only speed work of the week on Thursday evenings, and take Fridays as a rest day. See how well I survive trying to run 150 to 200 miles per month when I can't work at home 3 days a week any more, but the major thrust of training is just building miles.

January 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY) finished in 53:58

Great job everyone who met and exceeded their goals!
Thanks to all of you for being welcoming and sharing your experiences. I've really enjoyed reading all the recaps, the ups and downs, and inspirations.
I finished off the month with a rest day yesterday and 2.11 (pretty slow) miles today.
I'm really happy with this, as it's my highest month yet. I feel encouraged to push it up to a goal of 90 for next month, and to work on consistency.
I read this
http://womensrunning.competitor.com/2016/06/t-rex-runner/5-best-things-about-being-a-newbie_61596
today and felt like all the points were so true. Being a new runner this past 9 months has been so exciting. Everything seems impossible, and then...I'm doing it!
See you all over in the July thread5 -
Hey hey y'all!
Congrats to all who completed their goals for this month. If you didn't, don't fret. Next month is tomorrow
So, I'm still trash with logging the miles everyday, but I got them in.
End: 118/115 mi.5 -
