I don't care where you stand politically or what country you're from, watching the democratic transfer of power is an awesome thing to witness.

  It was amazing. And Obama's speech was amazing. I had to watch it at work on the computer, so the box was small, but it was still awesome!

It is not awesome for everyone.

    ditto

I have a student who chose to stay home and watch TV instead of come to school. Believe me there will be severe consequences for this unacceptable decision.

Actually, I think it's a good idea to allow kids to witness these moments in our country's history. No matter who we voted for, this will go in the history books that we end up reading while in school. Why not be there to see it actually happen if you are able to.

they can witness it on the news tonight just like every one of my students who made the correct decision and came to school. It's not like there will be any shortage of news coverage of the messiah. Our school was also in session yesterday, on the basis that Dr. King would want students to be learning, rather than sitting at home. Our methods may be controversial but we have the highest test scores in the entire bay area (inner city kids in Oakland), and the 5th highest test scores in all of California. My principal is enforcing the decision that absences today are unexcused unless accompanied by a doctor note.

I completely agree. No matter what your political views, today is still a historical day. That student probably values that experience and it is probably worth whatever consequences you threaten him with. I know it would be for me. Sorry if you're offended, I don't mean it that way. I just think everyone should witness all of these positive moments in history if they have the chance.

I did not vote for Obama but, now that he is our Prez I support him 110%.
I hope he lives up to the hype b/c we need a great leader right now.

Wether it is a white or minority prez it makes U proud to be an American when watching something like the innaguration. We are a blessed country but sometimes we forget that.

This is such a historical event that I'm sure they had the students watch. I think this is a weak excuse.

That is great about your students having the highest test scores and the work you are doing is admirable. And I can appreciate what a difficult job being a teacher is.

However, I live in an area where it barely even sprinkles snow and kids are allowed to stay home from school. Even the hint of bad weather causes a delay. So, for such an historic moment as this, I would think the schools could be understanding.

Instead of making it an unexcused absence, how bout turn it into a homework assignment. Maybe suggest that those who wanted to stay home to see the inauguration then write an essay on what this day would mean to them. It is an opportunity to learn after all.

what I find offensive is the notion that his complexion somehow makes this a bigger deal than any other president. Dr. King is famous for stating that he had a dream that someday men will be judged NOT for the color of their skin but for the content of their character. (bold mine) Isn't that in contradiction to the hoopla being made over the first BLACK president? He's just a man. A man who will try his best to do the toughest job in our country. His facial appearance has very little to do with that.

IMHO- Students who choose television over class attendance are making the wrong decision. Their parents who call them in "sick" are teaching them that lying is okay. I understand and respect your opinion, but the amount of extra media attention to every little thing (the DOG???) is getting tiresome. (for me)

I missed the whole thing because my 12yo dd is sick with pneumonia  and as excited as we've been to witness the moment, she isn't up for watching TV. I'll have to read about it in the papers.
  • The president is not African American, he is American, didn't he have a white mom? and a black dad? so that makes him us!!!! I think they have also blown the color thing out of proportion, he is not there for that reason. He is there because he represents Americans
