  • Well ladies, I am going to be really, really slacking today.

I have to work a really, really long shift at work which has so far involved me getting up before the sun. Then I have to hang out with my family for the 4th .... and then a boy from work is taking me on a date. So, I'm going to try my best and watch what I eat, but I think today might just need to go ahead and be written off as a fail. Hahaha.

No way! Remember that we're all on different points in this journey. I think there are a couple in this group that are closer to their final goals. Also, we are all different heights and body types. I am petite, barely 5'2". While my number of pounds might seem small to you, it is still too much for my petite frame. I started a year or two ago and took off about 20-30 lbs. I'm not completely sure because I was too chicken to get on the scale for a real starting weight (and you are the first I've admitted that, too). I just know that I went from a size 10 or 12 to a size 4. I have been maintaining for a while. I'm in grad school and that, in addition to my performances and gigs, teaching lessons, plus keeping up with 4 teens and housework, tends to tank any weight loss efforts. So I wait until June to work on those goals. This last 10-20 pounds has been haunting me for over a year. I didn't have the "stick-with-it-ness" to do it last summer but I am determined to follow through now ... with your help and encouragement.

That's a LOT to keep up with! Props for taking any time to be dedicated! I'm 5'8" and apparently carry my weight well since anyone I've told that my goal is to lose 80 responds with "lose that much from WHERE?" and then guess I'm about 180. My heaviest was in 2004 at 280, lost 90 pounds then gained up to 250 when I moved to Minneapolis. I've barely started this in the scheme of things and honestly peoples success stories is what has kept me excited to keep going. Let's keep it going!

    July 4th Challenges:
    water: 64/80 (oz)
fruits and veggies: 3/4 -- strawberry, apple, green beans
    miles (7/4- 7/10) : 0/14

Not the best way to start the week, but I will have a great day today.

What's your plan of attack for this week?

My plan is to keep up with our challenges. My goal is a couple shorter runs of a mile or two at a 10 min mile pace. My longer runs will probably be at a little slower pace on average.

I hope everybody is enjoying their day. :-)

since we started this challenge on a Friday and our weigh ins are on Friday, do you think it would be a good idea to come up with new challenges each week on Friday? Anyone could come up with challenge ideas, I think 3 is a perfect number, not too many, not too few.

I posted this a little while back. I would love everyone's feedback on it! Are we content with the challenges that we have now? are they still considered "challenging"? If not, we can come up with different ones every week. Shoot out your ideas and we can come up with something collectively.

I think we should come up with new challenges each week... shake it up a little. Miles are challenging for me but fruits/veggies is pretty easy. I'm doing pretty good with the water habit now, too. :-)

    July 5th Challenges:
    water: 80/80 (oz)
fruits and veggies: 1.5/4 -- 1/2 apple, cabbage (will do much better tomorrow.
    miles (7/4- 7/10) : 6/14 (3 on the elliptical, 3 on the bike)

Thanks Suzzanne, any idea? maybe pushups? crunches? lunges? squats? workout during commericials during a 60 minute program? add a 10 minute walk after dinner? workout 10% more in the course of a week. So if you usually do 300 minutes a week, shoot for 330?

for food: try a new recipe and then share it with the group (if it turned out good)? try a new fruit or vegetable that you've never had)? log and stay under your calories everyday for a week?

Does any of those sound like something you'd like to try? We can come up with one or two from the exercise category and one from the food category so we can still have 3 per week. If you have any others to add, feel free!

Leela, I like all of your challenge ideas, especially pushups/crunches/lunges/squats. Calories burned? I love the recipe idea as I'm getting a little bored with what I am choosing to eat lately and would love new ideas.

Do you listen to music when you exercise? What are your favorite workout songs? Which ones keep you motivated the longest? I'm looking for new things to add to my playlist, especially more upbeat things that will help me keep a quicker pace during runs.

maybe we can do push ups and crunches for week 2 and then lunges and squats for week 3. The recipes maybe can outgoing.

I don't know where everyone is atm. I hope to see them on or before Friday's weigh in!
  • I LOVE to listen to music when I work out, especially if I'm running or lifting weights. My current playlist is mostly all up beat Top40 kind of stuff.

I used to listen to music while I worked out! I ended up picking songs that I had really bonded with when I was a bit younger (music has been my life so I get really emotionally attached haha) so that I can lose myself in the workout. Now I work out in the fitness room at my work which has the nice little tv's on them. I find it more distracting to watch weird shows on discovery fit and health now

The past month has been very rough on me. I miscarried my twin babies at 16 weeks and right after I had surgery on my Gallbladder and was hospitalised for 8 days I'm trying to heal emothionaly and physicaly.
This month I'm in looking to lose 8lbs or more.

I'm so sorry! I hope you have a good support system set up - you certainly need one for your tragedy.

I think it's a good idea to do what you can to heal emotionally and physically as you said. I would concentrate on that more so and personally, not focus overmuch on your weightloss.

    Take care.

Weekly exercise - right on track!

Portland has finally gotten some good weather which has me outside working in my yard and getting my garden FINALLY planted!! I didn't even turn on my computer yesterday which is an amazing thing and I only just got on here a lil bit ago this evening.

I read through the posts - everyone is doing so good! I like the pushup/crunch challenge and the squats one for week 3. I think that is how it went? It would be kind of fun to give a meal a calorie total and see what people come up with. Like a lunch recipe that doesn't exceed 400 cals or a breakfast that doesn't exceed 300? What do you think? It might be something we regularly fix for ourselves but would give others ideas for something different yknow?

I love upbeat music for my playlist and will continually add songs that make me want to dance as I hear them on the radio. I used to buy them off itunes but just discovered amazon has music you can buy/download, some for only .69!

Sorry I haven't posted here, but again, it's rained in Portland basically non stop since October and the nice weather was such a wonderful relief!!

Geez, I'm so sorry! Thank you so much for sharing with us. We are all very caring and supportive here. Bunny is right, don't focus so much on the weight loss this month. Take all the time you need. You need to heal from the inside first and then worry about the outside!

I'm as ready as I ever am to step on the scale tomorrow. I know that, regardless of what the scale says, I've done the best I could this week. I've eaten correctly (although maybe too few calories on a day or two) and I've pushed myself in exercise.
