Just found this thread. I am training for Bike MS Oregon the first weekend in August. More on my journey here: http://www.sheridestoday.com/bikems/
I struggled last month. I had a cold/cough for 6 weeks where anytime I exerted myself I'd end up in a coughing fit t My goal is to ride 4 long rides (over 50 miles) in the next 23 days leading up to the ride. I also bike commute to work; 16 miles round-trip.

Three days of thunderstorms is getting under my skin. Beautiful while I am at work and late afternoon to eve here they come rolling in when the humidity peaks.

Joined my tri team for their Wednesday older member group ride. Group went a bit slower than usual (as we were politely directed to limit our pulls to 22-23mph), but enjoyed the ride as I finally could check out my power on the power meter and see the effect of drafting (~100-120 watts at the back of the paceline, 150 near the front, then 220 pulling @ 23mph). Really curious how much power it will take to pull on my Friday ride once I put on more aero gear.

    7/1 - 28 miles
    7/3 - 51 miles
    7/5 - 52 miles
    7/6 - 35 miles
    7/7 - 32 miles
    7/8 - 46 miles
    7/9 - 50 miles
    7/10 - 13 miles
    7/11 - 44 miles
    7/13 - 33 miles

    Total: 384 miles
    Goal: 621 miles
    Remaining: 237 miles

@CricketKate - Over the winter, some of the snowbirds in my building do a social 3-4 hour ride at about 10mph that I'll join, and my solution is usually to just spin at a higher cadence, but occasionally if I get really bored, I'll just push then coast for 20-30 second at a time and enjoy the scenery.

@sijomial Thanks for the comment on the cadence! Yes, I'll keep working on it, even though it will probably take me quite a while to get used to it, and stop feeling tempted to switch to a higher gear. Except for the way to work in the morning - that's uphill enough that I wind up in the lowest gear sooner or later anyway.

    Two more commutes this week:
On Tuesday, the heat wave around here suddenly ended with a spectatular thunderstorm in the afternoon, and I got completely drenched on the way home. Wednesday was just as rainy, so I wimped out and took the car, but I made up for that with some detours on my way home today.

12/7/2016: 10.9 km work and back
14/7/2016: 21.1 km work and back
    ---
July: 100.1 km (of 150km goal) done

I'm just going/gone through the changeover to higher cadence/lower gear over the last couple of weeks and (to quote the Monkees) I'm a believer - it has really increased both my average speed and my endurance.

Increased average speed and endurance sound good :) , thanks for giving me some extra motivation to stick with it!

    Happy Canada Day from a Canadian-Australian. :)

Saturday 2 July -- 1186 metres (3891.076) of climbing, in 81.8 km of cycling, completed within 5.5 hours (elapsed time) and 4:35 moving time for an average speed of 17.8 km/h (moving time).

The ride included a couple Category 4 climbs with various climbs in the 13-16% grade range.

Starting temperature 12°C with a high of 14.7°C halfway through the ride. We had a headwind on the way out and tailwind on the way back, for the most part, with some odd, very chilly gusts now and then. It was mostly cloudy and looked like it was going to rain several times, but fortunately, that didn't happen. On the way back we were sure we were going to get caught in a rain squall, but it passed behind us and we just got a small blast of it.

We started the ride about 12:30 pm so, since the sun sets at about 4:45, it was pitch black by the time we finished. A little night riding practice. For some reason climbing is so much more difficult in the dark.

And we stopped for lunch at the halfway point. I had been looking forward to that, but unfortunately they were out of many choices (busy day what with the federal election), and what we ate (paninis with lots of spinach) didn't sit well at all. I was about 1 km out of the town on the way back when I started feeling very unsettled. And then about 8 or 9 km later we started a long, long climb (one of the cat 4 climbs) and by the time I got to the top, I was not feeling at all well. Fighting to keep things down. However, I took an electrolyte tablet and a Zantac, and that eased things a bit.

The route mainly followed the coast so we had lots of beautiful views of water and green hills.

There were lots of birds around ... a large flock of black cockatoos filled a tree next to where we parked at the start of the ride and we had to dodge and weave between the pine cones they were dropping from the tree ... we were being bombed! And during the ride, I spotted herons, oyster catchers, small gulls, large Pacific gulls, a cormorant airing its wings ... and most spectacular was a massive wedge-tail eagle which took flight from a tree next to the road, and flew across, right in front of Rowan. I don't think I've ever seen them that close, but Rowan has because they come onto the property where he works. In fact, just yesterday, he rescued a young one which had flown through the net over the orchard, and then had become stuck inside.

Overall, it was a good, strenuous, training ride on a beautiful but quite hilly route. :)

Oh, and I wore my new winter cycling boots for the first time. They're very comfortable but I will have to do something about drafts coming in around my ankles. And ... I need to install a cleat!! I forgot all about that and so had to ride with my platform pedals the whole way!!

July 12 - 4 km walking (50 min) + 15 flights of stairs (12 min)+ 45 min on my bicycle on the trainer + about 5 min of core work/weightlifting

Last week, I was battling food poisoning acquired at lunch on the 81.8 km mentioned above ... and then an unrelated allergic reaction to an antibiotic. I had all sorts of plans for great workouts last week ... and barely managed to get some walking in.

Then we went up north for a 3-day weekend and were intending to do 3 days of cycling, but the weather had different plans. It's winter here and very wet, cold, and unpredictable. But we did get one good ride in! :) And it was a good ride ... the fastest 100 km I've done in years!

Back on the trainer this week.

I have been so bad this month as it is just too darn hot down here to even get on the bike. Only went 3 times so far this month. Am so embarrassed I am not even going to list my miles. I still plan to do the Loop around the Lake for Literacy https://www.youcaring.com/literacy-coalition-of-palm-beach-county-517500
but training is on hold right now. Have been swimming twice a week and Biking only on Sunday. Once this heat index of over 100 passes I will be back out. Just can't do it in this weather.

I'll trade you some of your heat for the spring-autumn-autumn-winter cycle we seem to be on in the UK this year

I feel you with the heat! I only did 60 miles this week... I tough through the Florida summer weather, mostly because I have to get to work and back home. Not sure I could motivate myself to go on rides without having something to accomplish on the ride. I couldn't bike to work today because my pedal broke on the way in and my tape job didn't hold up well on my way back home. Not to mention, my only working brake also somehow broke. UGH. I need a new/better bike so badly, just cannot afford it. *SAD FACE*

I would gladly take the spring-autumn-autumn-winter cycle. This heat is really doing a number on me. I can't get on any spin bikes in the gym due to my disability so not getting on my trike is doing a number on my body too. I feel it declining. I may just have to sweat it out for the rest of the month as I know I need to get back biking.

Good for you! I too since Feb have been training for a Bike challenge but not doing as well as you are. How you and the others ride so long is beyond me and very impressive. Some day I hope to be able to do just 14 miles.

15.7 agonizingly slow miles with my 3 youngest children ages 11, 9, and 7. So, to any of you who may have been in this situation before: when riding s-l-o-w-l-y, like 6 mph, because that is as fast as your 7 year old can pedal, is it better to use a difficult gear so you feel like your legs are working even if you don't feel like you're moving? Or would it be better to use an easy gear so your pedals are going around even if your bike is not going forward?

    exercise.png

I think it is great that you bike with your children. In catching up on my reading of posts I read your daughter had a rough ride the other day and had to be rescued. I have had to be rescued three times since I started riding too. Not fun when that happens. It is hard for me to believe I go as slow as your 7 year old and I thought I was doing well. WOW! Well one of these days when I get these last 80 pounds off (have already lost 253 pounds) I hope to go as fast as all of the others on this board. I also love your ticker. I just did one for my weight loss. Hope it shows.

Where in Florida are you located? I am in South East Florida, West Palm Beach. Sorry to hear your bike is in such condition, hopefully you can get this one repaired and it will last awhile longer
