Just a vent about stupid comments

I've gotten similar comments for the past 18+ months I've been in maintenance, although less the more time passes. I'm 5'6", about 140lbs, with a very slim/not curvey figure. Most recently, my mother in law (who is 89 years old and who I absolutely love!!) said that I don't need to work out because I'll blow away. She doesn't realize that working out is what keeps me slim and healthy...I'm not trying to lose more weight. Often things are said out of ignorance, but sometimes they are said out of jealousy because you are where they want to be. The rude and jealous stuff used to really tick me off, but I've started to consider the source and let things roll off. It's about them, not me. I think you look amazing, and as another commented, I'd love to go on vacation and have a beer with you!!2

I'm sorry you're being treated that way Is it your friends that are saying these things to you, or strangers? If its your friends, then they don't seem much like friends to me. If its strangers, have you noticed their appearance? Almost any time someone makes a comment to me about my weight, they're twice my size - and that only means they are jealous. Hell, I admit I get a little jealous when I see more fit women than me lol. I'm the same height as you and weigh 20 lbs less, I have yet to receive a comment that mean - and I would say I look more like a 12-year-old than you do (lets just say I have no curves on top). By looking at your picture, you absolutely do not look like you are 12. You look very fit and strong, and I admire that, and I know there are others out there who do, too.
I'd also like to add that America has the highest rate of obesity than anywhere else in the world. Thin people are the minority, so we will be made fun of for it. But, us more fit folks will have the last laugh as those who make fun of you die from obesity related illnesses.1 -

See, I kind of think it's a problem when people say things like this. Please be careful about becoming the bully, because your words sound pretty darn judgemental.
It sounds more like YOU'RE the one making fun of people here. It's kind of sick to joke about laughing at others dying from obesity-related illnesses. I think you need to check yourself and where you came from and what got you there, and stop acting "holier-than-thou". You are NOT suddenly worth more because you lost weight.
I still stand by my thought that OP's friends likely didn't mean harm, and a simple, honest, straightforward "it hurts my feelings when you say things like that" is bound to go a long way. Better than having others ridicule them on the internet.

As they say on the internet " Haters gonna hate"1

Any wonder why the world is in the mess it is? People can be heartless and mean. Especially if they hide behind a keyboard. Good news -- more good people than bad in the world. Give better than you get and you'll be alright. Have a great week.

Who ARE these people who say such unkind things in the guise of a joke or back-handed compliment?
I spent the first half of my life trying to please other people and worrying about their opinions of me. For the second half I will choose better friends and just do me, as I please!6 -
You look fit and active to me, and given the setting and giant beer in your profile pic, I'd love to go on vacation with you! I understand that it can be hard to ignore stupid comments, but seriously... you look great! Don't let the haters get to you!
That really was a giant beer, in Grand Cayman. Pretty heavy, too. Pic shows off my "beer lifting muscles."4 -

People do not walk up to other people and exclaim that they are overweight or that they need to lose some weight, but somehow they think it's okay to make "skinny" comments or tell us that we need to eat more. Strange, isn't it?
I think it's all rooted in jealousy.
I just take any and all ridiculous comments about my size to be compliments.9 -
People make comments because they are not used to seeing you at this size. They will get used to it. If not my strategy is to say (In a really nice tone), " Wow, that was a really mean thing to say; and you hurt my feelings". That usually sets them straight.
This. You teach people how to treat you. If you let them insult you and don't say anything, you're telling them that it's ok to do so. If you find a comment inappropriate, you need to say something. That doesn't mean that you have to be rude or yell, but something like the above is completely appropriate.6 -
Mrs Floyd knew her diet was working when her friends started calling her "skinny bi**ch". Having observed these ladies yes I believe there is an element of jealousy and not wanting one's friends to change when you're stuck in the same old place.7

You have very nice arm muscle tone. Without knowing your age or seeing the rest of you in a picture it's hard to tell but one of the things you have to remember is you don't fit into society's standard perception of what someone your age is supposed to look look like.
What you have to remember is you're doing this for yourself and that's the only opinion you should be really concerned about. The positive compliments I say thank you the negative compliments I go okay whatever.
All you have to do is spend the day at the beach or downtown people watching and see what the average person looks like. It's like the old Japanese proverb the nail that sticks out gets hammered down. Why you looking the way you do you take away their excuses and a lot of people can't deal with that2 -
i have talked to other women who get similar comments...usuall from women. maybe jealousy

I've gotten those comments. Truth be told, I have a 12 year old son and some of his clothes fit me... I've seen the Facebook memes about not being a size 0 because I'm not a 12 year old, I'm a real woman. Well so am I. We come in all shapes, sizes and colors and we're all beautiful!! Don't let it get to you. Probably just jealous!!9
-
You look awesome. Why do you care?2
-
People come out with all sorts of pointless, mindless crap, in my experience. The fact that these people are family, friends, or people we like doesn't seem to make much difference alas.2
-
I agree w/Amber and the other comments; some folks see you becoming healthier and taking care of yourself and want to make themselves feel better by putting you down. I'm 65 and lost 11 lbs last year by cutting back on overly processed food, watching my portion sizes and sugar intake (natural & added). I don't consider myself under weight (I'm 5'3"), but don't want to lose any more weight; overly skinny when you're older makes you look older. From what I can see of your pic, you don't look 12; I think they're just jealous.3

My reply to remarks like this is always to say, with a big smile, "Yes! Isn't it great! And I feel fabulous too! You should try it yourself!"12

I love this response - going to try this myself!1 -
CindyFooWho wrote: »the most recent one really kind of bothered me. It was "you look like a 12 year old." I'm sorry, was that at all supposed to be flattering? I look like a CHILD?
That wasn't meant to be flattering. It's a crappy comment from a jealous person. "REAL women have CURVES blah blah blah"...
I tell people I am changing my diet and use that as a reason that I can't go for pizza or eat five cupcakes or whatever, and even though I am still overweight, people go, "YOU'RE dieting? Come on." Like what do I need to look like for you to approve me bettering myself? Geez.

Yeah, I've been told that I'm too skinny. Or had acquaintances look me in the eye and tell me it grosses them out when women are muscular. So, can't win. Too skinny for some, too muscular for others. (I'm 47 & 5' 2" & 116, fairly muscular).
Good thing I'm not getting fit for anyone but myself.13 -
CindyFooWho wrote: »I've received the usual, "geez, eat a donut or something"
Next time someone says that, tell them they owe you a donut. When they pay up, eat the donut right in front of them, and be obvious about savoring every bite. Then tell them how much you lift as you walk away.
Seriously, though, haters gonna hate. You seem like you're handling it well. Keep on keeping on!6 -
In high school, it took all my energy to lose 30 pounds and get to my goal weight of 145 (I'm 5'9"). I was miserable and I completely pulled away from all of my friends because I couldn't be around them eating all the time.
My mom's friend looked at my and said, "you just need to lose another 30 pounds and then you'll be perfect."
Since when is it perfect for someone who's 5'9" to weigh 115 pounds?
Since when is it ok for a none-health expert to tell a teenager how much she should weigh?
Since when is it ok to ignore the progress someone has made to tell them how far they still need to go?
This happened 15 years ago and I'm still outraged by her careless comment.5 -
I get a lot of people telling me that I need to be done losing weight. The funny thing was people started in with those comments a long time ago when I was definitely still overweight. I lost 90 lbs though total so i think it was hard for people to get used to. Now that I'm on maintenance people still make those comments but it's weird because their weight goals are even less than mine, or they want to weigh the same as me but they are two inches taller. Yet I "need to be done"? Don't get it.2

Smile sweetly and say "Thank you - I feel younger too."4

One time when a co-worker was being really persistent I offered to give her my doctor's phone number and permission to discuss my medical conditions with him. She backed off. I am glad she didn't take me up on it because my doctor is a busy guy who doesn't need that kind of nonsense.5

I'm glad I saw this thread today. It's kind of how I feel about the thread regarding 5'3"/5'4" women in the General Diet and Weight Loss help section right now. There are so many comments from women there along the lines of "My goal is 13X because I have boobs/a butt/curves/want to look womanly/gain muscle easily/am large framed/want to be strong, not skinny/bony, etc." Some of those reasons are just poor. Some women will look good at 130, others at 140, others at 115, etc. I posted in that thread and I'm 5'3" and maintaining at 108 pounds. I don't look bony and I am/do look strong. I'm not shaped like a boy and I do have curves at my weight.
I don't understand why people have to preface their goal weight with explanations or put down the weight of others in the process. It's always when someone is out of the average range that people have things to say. Outside of the forums, coworkers have told me to stop losing weight, that I should look like a woman still, that muscles are for men and one guy flat out said "You were hot a few months ago, but now you're getting a little too thin" like I give a damn about what gives him a boner. People are meddlesome and need to mind their business. Very few are truly concerned, a lot just want a reason to talk, and some are flat out jealous of any progress someone else makes or feel like they have to justify things because they don't have what it takes to get where you are and feel insecure. It's so hard to tune that stuff out, but it's the only way to handle things like that.14 -
I like to challenge comments like this in a casual manner.
Asked with sincere curiosity "What do you mean by that?" If they are being a jerk then they will get embarrassed or stumble over their words trying to defend themselves and probably not make these comments again to you (yay) or more likely they will clarify what they mean which can be either a compliment or an ignorant belief. If the former you can either take it as a compliment or let them know (respectfully) that you don't appreciate it and why and if the latter you can have a genuine discussion about the misplaced belief ie that slim built woman aren't womanly. I find these discussions to be quite interesting and you both grow as a person!
You are doing awesome! Keep it up!!3 -
I don't have time right this very minute to read everybody else's comments, and I agree that it stinks- and have also had to deal with rude statements from people that I love in the past regarding my weight / weight loss or eating or exercise habits.
One suggestion I have to you is not to talk about it. Obviously the people around you who know you well are going to realize that you have lost weight or are a fitness fanatic, but the rest of the world does really not need to know about how often you run, how many calories you eat or how conscious you are of your body size, you know?? It's none of their business for one, and for two it just gives them the opportunity to voice their potentially rude opinions.
