I was on prescribed phentermine when I first started and when I went to a weight loss clinic. I was also taking the b12 injections. I liked them and they definitely helped carve my appetite. I always here how unnecessary they are and how its a 'quick fix' and youll gain all the weight back when you get off of them, but its not true for everyone. Ive been off them for over a year now and still losing weight. Ive lost over 100 pounds. Its all about self control. Yes, they were helpful, and of course you cant just go to eating double the portions after you stop.
What Im trying to say is, they are helpful, and you can lose weight with them, and you can lose when you stop them, but you dont need them to lose weight. Its really all calories in vs calories out7 -
Here is my experience..
Averaged 2-3 hours sleep per night if i was lucky.
Extreme constipation
Complete personality change, eg depression, crying at the drop of a hat, argumentative, moody etc etc
Lack of concentration, driving a car was a struggle.
I can't think of any positive effects, i can't even remember if i lost weight in that time as it is all a blur in my head!3 -
^ see, everybody and every body is different and has different effects to it1

I added phentermine at the beginning of this month. It has helped me tremendously in terms of appetite control, weight loss, and mentally adjusting my thinking. The only side effect I've had is dry mouth but I drink so much water I tend not to notice it. I do not have the zero desire to eat that others have said they have. However, it has really allowed me to practice stopping and thinking before I eat, analyzing my hunger, etc. The lesser appetite really helps me stay within my calorie range while I'm working on all the other factors that go with weight loss. I'm also working on cognitive therapy to help me maintain once I go off of it. So I'm doing a lot of things along with the phentermine to make sure I'm successful in the long run with maintaining my losses.3

If one CAN'T control their appetite on their own, then they'll need this drug their whole life. The drug doesn't TEACH you how to control it yourself. That's more a habitual behavior you learn on your own.
Lots of people curse out of habit. Can one learn how to not curse if they apply themselves? Of course, it's just learning how to habitually do it.

Mmm yeah that's false.
I used it (half pill) for only a week after my first binge 30 days into losing weight and I've not had any issues since that binge 7+ weeks ago. Zero side effects for me. Definitely curbed my cravings because I was ready to go back to eating bad and giving up even though I had already lost 25+ pounds. Stopped taking it after a week of use and everything is going well. I almost wish I used it the first 2 weeks of my new life style as I was miserable to the point of tears every waking moment with severe food cravings and extreme hunger.
It's an aide, not a solution and it isn't for long term use.4 -
My husband was on phentermine for a while last year. He's diabetic and at the time was over 300 lbs so his doctor wanted him to lose weight quickly. He didn't really seem to have any side effects (at least none that he told me about) and he did end up losing about 40 lbs but that was also around the same time I started using MFP and I was making healthier dinners and we weren't going out to eat as often. Once I wasn't cooking as often his weight loss stopped and eventually his doctor had him stop taking the phentermine because it "wasn't working anymore". He's gained about half of the weight back and now his doctor has told him to just count calories, which is exactly what I told him he should try in the first place.5

I wonder why some people get zero side effects and yet i got the whole whole gamut of them!
OP there's a forum completely dedicated to duramine (phentermine) users, is has loads of info.

I took phentermine for a few months a few years back.
1. I lost 40 lbs fairly easily.
2. I gained 60 back fairly quickly after I stopped.
3. I made my resting heart rate about 120.
4. The dry mouth was awful.
5. My gallbladder suddenly ruptured. I had no history of gallbladder disease and was 26 years old, two days after my wedding. Spend over a week in the hospital. The surgeon said it was linked to using phentermine. I don't know how true that statement is but he said it causes issues with the gallbladder and pancreas.1 -
I took 37.5 phentermines for 3 months. I lost 40lbs. I started having terrible mood swings and decided that I'd like to stay married so I stopped taking them. I've since lost another 41lbs. I used it to jump start my loss and took the time while on it to teach myself the correct way to eat. Does it happen this way often? Not from what I've read. Most will lose alot. They then gain it all back when they stop. It isn't a miracle pill. There are risks associated with taking it. Personally, I was 418lbs and looking at a heart attack in my near future without intervention so I decided that the benefits outweighed the risks.4

You say you have been calorie counting and the issue is no loss not trouble with controlling your appetite? I think the issue here is logging accuracy and no drug in the world can help with that. Tighten up your logging by using a food scale for solids and semi solids, cups for liquids and be consistent with it for 6-8 weeks. Log religiously.
Only then will you now if it's "working". The drug isn't going to make any significant difference to how many calories you need to consume.6 -
I took phentermine a few years ago. I lost weight; about 14 lbs a month. I just felt awful though. I was edgy, couldn't sleep and extremely stressed out. I stuck with it hoping the side effects would stop but they never did. Best to ween off if you decide to try them but don't like the way they make you feel. You will feel very tired and moody when you stop and crave carbs like crazy.
Good luck either way.

I work with a Dr that runs a weight loss program and she prescribes it. I have used it also. You can't use it for more than 3 months at a time because your body will build up a tolerance. I think it's good to use as a jump start because you literally won't crave anything. Once you stop eating all the bad stuff you won't crave it. But you also have to learn how to eat for your body. Even though u aren't eating as much, what are you eating? How much water are you drinking. If you total 1200 calories a day but all of your calories came from pasta, bread and sugary drinks, then you probably won't lose weight.1

A calorie deficit is the only thing required to lose weight.
The drug will work only if you eat at a calorie deficit, and if you eat at maintenance or at a surplus, the drug will not work at all.
The reason you've been successful at your weight loss after choosing not to take the pill any more is because you created a calorie deficit.
Just because you tried it out without zero side effects, and you have been successfully losing weight without it, does not mean your experience applies to everyone else. However, a calorie deficit leading to weight loss is science, just as a surplus of calories leads to weight gain.
Aides are not necessary to weight loss.0 -

I happen to agree with this.

and how does it work, and have you done any research to see if it's scientifically backed?
Here's a good place to find reliable scientific data.
Over on the right, the 3 databases I use most are PubMed, PubMed Central, and PubMed Health.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/
Yes, I've used phentermine and it helped me a lot.
It immediately controlled my ravenous hunger, so I could learn to eat reasonable portions.
I had no bad side effects - no mania, mood swings, high blood pressure, rebound eating, nothing.
If I had dry mouth I didn't notice it because I drink lots of water anyway. (Most days at least 1.5 L,
more when it's hot.)

Before I used phentermine (which I knew is only OK to use for several months, not permanently), I could
eat half a large pizza, then be genuinely hungry just a couple hours later.
Not bored, not thirsty, hungry. Tummy-rumbling, gnaw-my-arm-off hungry.
Phentermine controlled my hunger while I learned (and my body came to accept) healthy portions.
I lost weight because I was no longer ravenous, no longer had uncontrollable hunger, and could eat reasonably.
The drug reset my appetite. I stopped using it, kept eating normally.

The 3 studies relating to the pancreas are from the late 1970s and chlorphentermine, so not really applicable.

Weight loss is all about calories. Eat less than you burn & you will lose weight, no matter if those calories
come entirely from butter, or bread, or beef, or broccoli.
Diversity in calorie sources relates to health. So have some butter, on some bread, with some beef, and
some broccoli with dinner.10 -
No, phentermine is not for everyone, some people have side effects and some people dont.
I used it, lost over 100 pounds and have kept it off without the pill.
Im sick of reading people say how terrible it is because its a 'quick fix'. You cant use it, eat at a calorie deficit, then get off it and eat super large portions again and expect to lose weight. The weight gain isnt the pills fault, its yours.
Of course, if you try it and experience the awful side affects then stop right away, because no, you dont need the pill to lose weight.

I dont eat mainly anything because i crave nothing. Applesauce slimfast and maybe a salad or soup most drink about 64oz of water a day sometimes more.0 -

I know its hard, especially when you first start taking it because yeah you crave nothing, but you still need to eat. Eating too few calories isnt good for your body. I honestly just made myself eat 5 small meals a day until the pill wore off a little and didnt have that initial huge reaction.1

Rapid weight loss and fasting cause gallstones, two things which I suppose are phentermine related. That being said, taking out the gallbladder of a 26 year old isn't exactly rare.1 -

I took phen/fen. It worked like magic! I dropped 60 pounds effortlessly. Learned nothing, gained it all back. Now I worry about my heart valves.
Here's a post from @itschanelle who just took phentermine alone:
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10329901/phentermine/p1
I have seen a lot of posts on and off about this and other weight loss drugs. I can vouch that they absolutely work. I have lost a lot weight using Phentermine on and off throughout about a 10 year span.
BUT...
The weight doesn't stay off. And those side effects? They are real.
You could take Phentermine and lose the weight, but you might end up like me. I'm 30 years old, slightly over weight, and have moderate tricuspid valve regurgitation. As in, I might need open heart surgery because my heart was damaged by Phentermine. To be clear, I never took it for more than a few months at a time, was monitored by a doctor, and did everything "right".
My lifespan has likely been shortened to lose a few pounds. Weight I could have lost on my own with a little bit of gumption. It wasn't worth it.2 -

Well, I've had those foods and have almost lost 100lbs. Carbs are not the enemy, too many calories are.1 -
I did not read the entire thread, but I am just going to respond with this even though it has probably already been said. I was on Phentermine and it was a bad experience. I was on it for three months and lost thirty pounds - which is great but it was not worth it. I had headaches daily, I couldn't sleep, and my heart constantly raced and pounded. I never had anxiety before, and it made me super anxious and paranoid. Then, worst of all, it stopped working. the body grows used to it, and it no longer works. I gained it all back and more after the three months was up. You're better off doing it without and focusing on your diet and exercise.0

I will always support phentermine because it worked for me. The first few days yes my heart raced a little but thats it and it only lasted a few days for me. If I had a lot of negative side effects like others had, I would have stopped. But my body responded well and when I stopped taking them, I didnt gain anyany weight back. I knew portion control and how to eat at a deficit so there was no reason to gain weight. If you gain weight after stopping the pill its because you werent eating at a deficit. but you dont need the pill to lose weight2

I am pretty sure I didn't say I lost all of my weight due to phen
Just because someone has a host of side effects doesn't mean every person will. Just because someone gains all the weight back when they get off phen doesn't mean everyone will. See how that logic goes?
Aides are not necessary to YOUR weight loss. I don't believe you speak for every person losing weight, sorry
