I am kinda worried now as I am literally addicted and love it and its all I drink since I really hate water I drink about 4 Litres a day ( I know its a lot ). Anyone has an idea regarding what I can do ?
Well...your Dad is wrong, so there is that. Diet coke is not going to give you diabetes or make you gain weight. Its not going to give you any nutritional value either. Its not going to do much of anything. So enjoy...or don't, but nothing to be worried by either way.1 -

I've drunk the stuff all my life, and have quit over and over and over. I am just poised to give it up for about the millionth time. I find when I'm not drinking it, my sugar cravings subside naturally.
It's also a diuretic, so I'd really encourage you to at least alternate water with diet coke; dehydration is no joke. I know how hard it is - I don't drink coffee (I dont' like the taste) and diet coke is my sole source of caffeine. I know there are lots of people here who will say drink all the diet coke you want because it has no calories, but there is a lot of real medical evidence that you're better off without it. Good luck.
Aspartame is not toxic. It's been studied countless times and nothing has shown otherwise. And the diuretic effect of caffeine isn't enough to cancel out the hydration of the water in soda.5 -

Coke of all kinds is about as acidic than battery acid (I learned that in a science class). You can use it to clean rust off your car.

Don't tell yourself that you hate water -- give yourself a more positive message. Become a water freak. Put chilled bottles of water in your fridge. Try water with a slice of lemon or lime over ice. Buy yourself a gorgeous water bottle and carry it everywhere.
The kindergarten teachers use Coca Cola to clean dried paste off of scissors. It makes a great cleaner.
Vinegar is used to clean buildup in a coffee maker. Peanut butter is used to clean gum off of things. Your point?15 -
Diet coke contains caffeine and some small amount of salt which are both diuretic, that is true. However it also contains water. The amount of water it contains far outweighs the diuretic affect of the relatively little caffeine and salt is contained within. The idea that drinking a diet coke is somehow like drinking negative water is false. If you drink water you will be better hydrated than drinking water containing a diuretic, but you will still receive some hydration...it isn't a net negative.
People tend to get bored by simply counting calories and upping their activity level so they love to add all these little complications to keep themselves engaged like they have to avoid this or they have to get that. It really isn't that complicated, you don't have to avoid diet coke or diuretics to be healthy.10 -

Oxygen destroys metal, but coke cleans off the rust. We should all breath coke.15 -

Naturallivingideas.com is where you go for believable scientific reporting huh?

ETA: Just realized if you don't have journal access you hit a paywall, I'd be happy to provide the full meta-analysis to anyone who wants it.
Fear of aspartame is unscientifically founded bunk. Its woo. Its a public fear-driven movement that has no basis or merit. It doesn't make sense, it doesn't pan out in any actual scientific study. There is no reason for concern. Its a methylated dipeptide for christ sake.5 -

Did you actually read the study or did you stop at the title? Perhaps point to the place within the study where you feel they demonstrate a causative effect between drinking diet soda and weight gain or the development of type 2 diabeties. Or perhaps point out the part of this study where they provide the mechanism by which that would happen given that aspartame is just a methylated dipeptide.9 -

Google "gastric acid" (you know, the stuff that's in your stomach 24 hours a day for your entire life) and see how acidic it is.3 -

Have you ever seen what plain old water can do? It created the Grand Canyon, for heaven's sake!9 -

I'm not one to argue on internet forums, but there is a lot of documentation.
This science paper:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1474447/
And this piece on safefood, although this group obviously has a point of view:
http://www.safefood.org.nz/aspartaddict.html
An FDA paper on aspartame toxicity:
http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dailys/03/jan03/012203/02p-0317_emc-000199.txt
And many more. There are also pieces saying it is perfectly safe, so pick your poison. But one thing is sure - giving it up is not going to hurt you.
