Intermittent fasting

I know some people say that intermittent fasting really doesn't make a difference in your weight loss, it's just another way to control your calories in and your calories out. I honestly have some disagreements with that. But this is not a post to dispute it either way. This is just for me to say that I did do a fast and it broke a small Plateau or Stall whichever way anyone wants to look at it. I'll say this again it's not a debate . I really like intermittent fasting. Has any others who really like intermittent fasting had any results like this? If this is a post that is offending some please do not bother to respond as this is not a debate this is just for people who've experienced the same thing as I have. Thank you

It is working for me. I was stuck and struggled controlling my calories but with the limited window to eat I'm finding it much easier to stay under my allotted amount.10

I did it through the summer and lost 10 lbs in two months. I also gained strength on my core lifts (bench, squat, deadlift, and clean&jerk). I had plenty of energy and avoided binge eating that I experience with 6 meal cutting. It all depends on the individual.9

I find the problem I have with fasting is that it causes stomach acid and appetite issues, but I know others who have had great success with it. If it's working for you and you're getting an appropriate amount of calories and nutrients throughout the week, then go for it!6

The thing is that people don't understand that you can do intermittent fasting in two days of "not eating in two 16 hour periods" within a 48 hour period. I was just thinking @MrsKila that I would go two days of eating two meals within a 8 hour period and fasting for 36 hours total. (this means eating all of your allotted calories in an 8 hour period per day, and fasting the other 16 hours in a 24 hour period.) There are so many ways that you can participate in intermittent fasting. Thanks for reminding me! Fasting works!9

IF is working beautifully for me. I'm 60, female, and 5'2. I stay within my MFP calorie allotment, and do 16/8 daily.13

I just started IF 16:8 about a week ago. Lost 3 pounds that I was stuck on for weeks. I'm really enjoying doing it.11

tried it, didn't like it. One pro was that I was focused in the morning but couldn't *kitten* to save my life, even when taking fiber. Most people tend to have that issue when do do IF.2

I recently started IF and lost 3 pounds after a 2 week stall. I also like that it really reduced my appetite. I find that I'm eating about the same amount of calories, but the IF has ended my mindless late night snacking. I will say that I eat an apple in the morning before I exercise (I am up at 6 a.m.), but other than that wait until 11 a.m.5 -
I have been doing Fast:five since January and I love eating within a five hour window each day.4

No. As long as you're fasting for 16 and eating during your feed window. It will work.3 -
I've been doing IF for many months now, (a daily 8 hour eating window) and it made all the difference. Leangains.com is a great place to start learning about IF if you want information based on good science.5

Double trouble: restrained eaters do not eat less and feel worse
"high levels of dietary restraint do not appear to reflect actual caloric restraint, it has been found to be a risk factor for a wide array of maladaptive eating patterns. ... restrained eaters do not eat less than they intend to do"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18325547
"We examine the comfort food preferences and consumption patterns of women with highly versus less developed schemas for cognitive restraint, emotional and situational eating ... complex eating schemas weaken biological signals and produce maladaptive patterns... High schematics reported a lesser post-consumption increase in fullness than low schematics. Low schematics favoured low and high calorie foods equally, their choice motivated by pleasure and positive emotions."1 -

Not my experience at all. It has actually lead to much more regularity. I eat from 1:00pm - 9:00pm. Wake up in the am and have a BM. Never before, in fact I used to deal with constipation while at a calorie deficit do to the constant small amounts of food moving through my body. The larger amount in a small period seems to be helping to trigger peristalsis.

I recently just resumed a regular eating schedule from intermittent fasting for almost 2 months! I believe that it is a fabulous tool to use when you are stuck in a plateau. I was stuck at 160 lbs for two months and then with two weeks of IF I dropped 4.9 lbs! Now I will say that I don't like it for life long use, just for breaking plateaus/doing it periodically. I started developing binge-like tendencies toward the end of that 2 month period. It was almost as if my self control switch wasn't working. I assume it was due to getting in to the habit of eating large meals at the end of the day instead of smaller ones throughout the day. I became unsatisfied with smaller portions. So in my personal opinion, IF is a great temporary tool, but it did not do well for me long term.

It has worked for me nicely and I love it not to be eating every 3 to 4 hours.4

I've only been doing it for three days and I've already learned so much about my body and how I've been misreading/ignoring it's cues about hunger and satiety. Also, I've not had one episode of low blood sugar (I'm combining this with a no sugar intake). At first blush, I find this methodology amazing! Will I lose weight? Not sure yet on that. But I'm still happy with how I feel and will continue.
Best wishes to everyone out there who is trying to take control over their health!5 -
I liked 5:2 IF for weight loss, very successful. Far easier for me than everyday calorie restriction.
Tried but didn't like 16:8 at maintenance - but did learn from it.
I learned I can easily skip breakfast but really dislike regimented eating patterns or restrictions every day.1 -
We something a bit different than most do on a form of IF..
My husband is doing 5:2 for the second time. It REALLY works well for him. I do a 24 hour fast, once week on one of his fasting days .. We both break the fast day at dinner.. works for the cook in the house. I transfer the deficit across the rest of the week so I can eat more on non fast days.
Maintenance is 16:8 or what I call back to normal for us.1 -

Thanks to everyone for posting their experiences. I've done my research and am going to try it to break a plateau. I'm just not sure on my fasting window yet.4

Can sleep hours be factored into the 16 hours of fasting?2 -

yes, that is part of what makes the 16:8 so easy to follow.

I love IF! I've been doing at least 16:8 since July 1st. I started at 184 (5'3", female, 60) and am currently 169. My clothes are getting baggy, and I've gone down a jean size.11

I'm not typically one to get sucked into "fad" type diets or lifestyle changes but I am running 16:8 IF right now because I hurt my back and can do little more than walk for exercise. Nonetheless I've been able to achieve similar or better weight loss results as when I was working out 5-6 times a week. I still think it still comes down to CICO, but the IF style of eating fits into my lifestyle quite well and I feel like I am better able to manage my consumption under this eating regime.
Because it's so easy for me to maintain, I'm considering continuing to run IF after I've reached my weight loss goals and after I resume exercise again. I also really like the feeling of not being in a constant state of digestion when I'm awake and not having to worry about getting breakfast if I'm in a hurry. If it works for you and you are getting results no reason to change.4 -
Interestingly enough, in contrast to the poster who indicated that IF may produce maladapative eating patterns, (which is likely to be absolutely true for some people), for others IF fits their lifestyles quite well. I quite naturally have 1-2 days per week that I just have very little appetite, so a 5:2 IF pattern works for me. For people who can't face food in the mornings, a 16:8 IF pattern may work beautifully. If it isn't a hardship, why not?5

I love IF, my profile pic says it all. I lost all the weight with little or no exercise through Fast:5 and interspersed with 3-5 day full water only fasts...in the past I lost with exercise but always gained weight back as fast as I lost it. IF maybe is much slower but I know it will be permanent loss because its a lifestyle not a diet.6
