I'm going to be living at university in a few weeks and i just wanted some advice. I still want to go to the gym (theres a gym on campus) but i also want the social life of uni. WHat shall i do and have any of you done something like this too? Do you still go to the gym everyday whilst drinking alcohol which I've heard inhibits protein synthesis or maybe do a full body workout 4x a week and drink on your rest days?

You are over thinking this again.
It is completely possible to have a social life and have time in the gym. See how your course load goes and adjust as needed.4 -
Go to uni, enjoy yourself, go to the gym. You'll soon get in to a routine.
Don't go to the gym whilst drinking alcohol, you'll end up dropping something on your head.
Forget you ever heard the words protein synthesis and stop stressing about pointless minute details (unless your course involves the words protein synthesis, then don't forget it in an academic sense, just in an everything else sense).6 -

Not everyone does that. That is a huge misconception about college.1 -
Buy earplugs and read a textbook chapter while you walk on the treadmill.
Good luck!1 -

No I guarantee you not everyone does that. I can count on one hand the amount of times I went out drinking my first semester of college.1 -

Even though I'm from the U.S., I spent my first year abroad in London, so trust me I've been to my fair share of freshers events. Honestly you need to choose what's important to you. If you want to drink and party, then go ahead, but you need to accept that you won't be making optimal progress if you're out every night.0 -
Lace up your drinking boots dear boy. Go forth and smash freshers with all your might!
After two weeks of liver defouling carnage and far too many trips to the GUM clinic you'll realise that hangovers and studying don't go hand in hand.
If you're like me you'll then tone it down to Friday and Saturdays (plus rugby society Tuesday after training and med student society on a Friday).
Gym, what gym?5 -

American cultural documentaries such as Road Trip, American Pie, Harold and Kumar, Accepted and Van Wilder state otherwise.3 -

Oh I know they do, but they don't accurately portray university life. My first roommate was actually dismissed from our university because she drank so much she failed almost every class first and second semester. Another girl in my dorm was kicked out of the dorms for excessive drinking, and possession of alcohol in her room.
I'm not saying college can't be fun, but it's not all drinking like people think. Those who want to succeed and graduate pur academics first and have fun/party only if they have time.
Also, I lived in a sorority house junior and senior year. They had grade requirements as well as behavior requirements. If your grades dropped below a certain average, you were asked to leave the house and put on probation. If grades did not improve the next semester, you were completely kicked out of the sorority. You also weren't permitted to live in the house if you had ever been "written up" for a dorm violation.1 -

True but in the UK, drinking age is 18. So I think drinking and clubbing tends to be a bit more prevalent (at least publicly) because it can be done legally. Still college is supposed to be about getting a degree not getting wasted every weekend.0 -
in my last year though i just sat in my room studying the whole time and that's when i developed the depression from just staring at the same 4 walls all day and all night. i need a proper work/life balance but at the minute its about 90% work and 10% life0

I'm in my fifth year of university. I've yet to go to a student event but I always make it to the gym ;-) depends what your priorities are. There's no requirement to go out drinking, I see lots of the
students at my university choosing to go running whilst others are headed to the bar. Whatever you make time for!2 -
Not everybody drinks continuously through freshers. Some do, some don't. Just because you're drinking doesn't mean you need to get drunk either. I definitely drank more during freshers fortnight than I did the rest of my time at uni, but I didn't go out every night. We did other fun stuff in my halls - like go out for food, exploring the local area, and making the most of free events.
I went to the gym 3-4 times a week whilst I was at uni. I just made it fit around lectures, studying and employment. Still made friends, still went out, still had time for rest, and graduated with a 2:1. You just need to be flexible, but also keep your eye on what is important to you and make sure you prioritise that.4 -
yeah i agree with everything here its just i want to make friends and be more social as i was isolated and on my own the whole of last year but i still want to go to the gym in the mornings and study hard1

Hey, none of us want to be alone and if it's your first year then sure you are going to be anxious about making friends. You could still go out but not partake in alcohol. People don't always get that but after a while they accept it.
Alternatively, in my experience of universities (I've worked and studied under two different unis) there are a heap of other opportunities for socialising that aren't about drinking. There are sports teams, gardening clubs, chess clubs etc the list is endless, you can even make your own hobby club if you want! You're guaranteed to find at least one other person who is interested in the same stuff as you. Stick to what makes you happy and attend the student stuff that appeals to you. But most importantly, work hard and meet your deadlines, it goes so fast ;-)1 -

Bottom line is, you're a big boy now and it's time to take charge of your life and start making your own decisions. If you want to work out four days a week, figure out how to make time to do it. If you can't make time to do it, cut your workouts down to fit your schedule. If drinking takes a higher priority than working out, that's a decision you've made - accept that and roll with it or change it. If you have to work to pay the bills or study to pass your classes, maybe that will take priority for a while or maybe you'll learn how to organize your time well enough to fit your workouts in. The bottom line is that nobody else can make those decisions or write your schedule for you - you're an adult so it's time to start adulting.3 -
I would like to point out that the friends you make going out drinking constantly....are the kind of friends who like to go out drinking constantly. Which is fine if that's what you want to do, but if you don't, you'd probably be better off meeting people who do the same things as you.
If you want to spend your time at the gym and library, then the gym and library are probably great places for you to make friends, know what I mean? The good thing about university is that there are so many different people with different interests that it's never hard to find someone who's into the same stuff as you. Way easier than virtually any other point in your adult life in my opinion.4 -

yeah but who strikes a conversation and gets to know someone well in the gym or the library (where you get chucked out if you even so much as cough), drinking imo is the only place where people can actually show their full personality0 -

People can show their full personalities everywhere. To think that people are only capable of this when drinking . . . well, that's just not true. I've shown my full personality in bars, for sure. But I've also show it in the gym, at the library, at work, in my living room, etc.2 -
If it's just the alcohol portion that you are concerned with, you can always go out with friends and order non-alcoholic drinks.0
-
Honestly though people have no problem boozing and working out! You'll absolutely find time for both, and it's all about working to find the balance that makes you feel best! You'll also find that you can find gym buds with similar goals and concerns that can keep you accountable and even drag your hungover *kitten* out of bed and into the gym!1

I'm going out sunday and then Wednesday, do you think this is ok? shall I track these days as normal and leave some cals for drinks (about 600?) or just eat normal and have drinks as extra and just enjoy them instead of tracking them0
-
You are still over thinking this.4

You'll soon figure out what works for you.
If you want to party constantly, no doubt you can find someone to join you - probably not the same people every night, but depending on their own timetables, you can usually find someone with a late start tomorrow who is ready to cut loose tonight.
But you can still have fun without that, and you will find plenty of other ways to socialise - I found the gym actually quite a good place to make friends at uni, or just in classes & labs. Then you take lunch breaks together afterwards and chat some more, or moan about professors and assignments - no alcohol needed. I don't think that drinking-me is more me than regular-me. In fact probably the other way around, but I'll admit it can be a good way to break the ice (once it's broken though, there's really no need to keep on going).
When I was at uni, I kept an eye out for local bands playing (some bars had regular live music), comedy nights and other events - I found them better for actually interacting with people and making friendships.0 -
I was taking 16 credits, am part of student counsil, have friends, would wake up at 4am to workout, i counted calories, etc.
I ended up relapsing into my eating disorder, and i had a mental breakdown that led to at home care for a while.
PLEASE be careful. I am sorry but you cannot have it all without lagging in one area of your life.
Choose what is important to you.
You can party now and get it out of your system, and then jr year you can get your poop together.
Or you can understand whats really important and know that real friends are not just drinking buddies but people who you enjoy time alone with and who have your back
//if your going to drink at least opt for low cal vodka and tequila0
