I'm going to be living at university in a few weeks and i just wanted some advice. I still want to go to the gym (theres a gym on campus) but i also want the social life of uni. WHat shall i do and have any of you done something like this too? Do you still go to the gym everyday whilst drinking alcohol which I've heard inhibits protein synthesis or maybe do a full body workout 4x a week and drink on your rest days?

You are over thinking this again.
It is completely possible to have a social life and have time in the gym. See how your course load goes and adjust as needed.4 -
Go to uni, enjoy yourself, go to the gym. You'll soon get in to a routine.
Don't go to the gym whilst drinking alcohol, you'll end up dropping something on your head.
Forget you ever heard the words protein synthesis and stop stressing about pointless minute details (unless your course involves the words protein synthesis, then don't forget it in an academic sense, just in an everything else sense).6 -

Not everyone does that. That is a huge misconception about college.1 -
Buy earplugs and read a textbook chapter while you walk on the treadmill.
Good luck!1 -

No I guarantee you not everyone does that. I can count on one hand the amount of times I went out drinking my first semester of college.1 -

Even though I'm from the U.S., I spent my first year abroad in London, so trust me I've been to my fair share of freshers events. Honestly you need to choose what's important to you. If you want to drink and party, then go ahead, but you need to accept that you won't be making optimal progress if you're out every night.0 -
Lace up your drinking boots dear boy. Go forth and smash freshers with all your might!
After two weeks of liver defouling carnage and far too many trips to the GUM clinic you'll realise that hangovers and studying don't go hand in hand.
If you're like me you'll then tone it down to Friday and Saturdays (plus rugby society Tuesday after training and med student society on a Friday).
Gym, what gym?5 -

American cultural documentaries such as Road Trip, American Pie, Harold and Kumar, Accepted and Van Wilder state otherwise.3 -

Oh I know they do, but they don't accurately portray university life. My first roommate was actually dismissed from our university because she drank so much she failed almost every class first and second semester. Another girl in my dorm was kicked out of the dorms for excessive drinking, and possession of alcohol in her room.
I'm not saying college can't be fun, but it's not all drinking like people think. Those who want to succeed and graduate pur academics first and have fun/party only if they have time.
Also, I lived in a sorority house junior and senior year. They had grade requirements as well as behavior requirements. If your grades dropped below a certain average, you were asked to leave the house and put on probation. If grades did not improve the next semester, you were completely kicked out of the sorority. You also weren't permitted to live in the house if you had ever been "written up" for a dorm violation.1 -

True but in the UK, drinking age is 18. So I think drinking and clubbing tends to be a bit more prevalent (at least publicly) because it can be done legally. Still college is supposed to be about getting a degree not getting wasted every weekend.0 -
in my last year though i just sat in my room studying the whole time and that's when i developed the depression from just staring at the same 4 walls all day and all night. i need a proper work/life balance but at the minute its about 90% work and 10% life0

I'm in my fifth year of university. I've yet to go to a student event but I always make it to the gym ;-) depends what your priorities are. There's no requirement to go out drinking, I see lots of the
students at my university choosing to go running whilst others are headed to the bar. Whatever you make time for!2 -
Not everybody drinks continuously through freshers. Some do, some don't. Just because you're drinking doesn't mean you need to get drunk either. I definitely drank more during freshers fortnight than I did the rest of my time at uni, but I didn't go out every night. We did other fun stuff in my halls - like go out for food, exploring the local area, and making the most of free events.
I went to the gym 3-4 times a week whilst I was at uni. I just made it fit around lectures, studying and employment. Still made friends, still went out, still had time for rest, and graduated with a 2:1. You just need to be flexible, but also keep your eye on what is important to you and make sure you prioritise that.4 -
yeah i agree with everything here its just i want to make friends and be more social as i was isolated and on my own the whole of last year but i still want to go to the gym in the mornings and study hard1

Hey, none of us want to be alone and if it's your first year then sure you are going to be anxious about making friends. You could still go out but not partake in alcohol. People don't always get that but after a while they accept it.
Alternatively, in my experience of universities (I've worked and studied under two different unis) there are a heap of other opportunities for socialising that aren't about drinking. There are sports teams, gardening clubs, chess clubs etc the list is endless, you can even make your own hobby club if you want! You're guaranteed to find at least one other person who is interested in the same stuff as you. Stick to what makes you happy and attend the student stuff that appeals to you. But most importantly, work hard and meet your deadlines, it goes so fast ;-)1
