Kidney stones?

Not 100% sure which forum board this should go on.

Has anyone here ever has kidney stones? If so, anything you did at home to alleviate the pain? I can't take Motrin, aleve, Advil etc die to being pregnant. I shave been taking Tylenol buy it hasn't helped. Any one have any other ideas to help with the pain? If you went to your doctor, what did they do for you for them?

All of a sudden last nighy, had a a sharp pain in my back. It's only one side and goes from pelvis and almost to my rib cage. When I'm sitting still is just a dull ache, but if I move (like to bend to pick something up) it can be excruciating. I've never had them before but one of my significant others has and she said it was the exact same pain.

I already called my doctors office (we their call center since they aren't in on weekends) and they gave me an appointment for tomorrow morning. They said if it gets worse go to the ER which I really don't think is needed. It's just uncomfortable/moderate pain more than anything.

Are you sure that's what it is? If your pregnant and having sharp pains I recommend getting checked out ASAP.

I'm 99% sure, especially since sometimes when info to the bathroom, pain gets worse. I just saw my OB on Friday and everything was fine. Either way I have the appointment at 10am tomorrow so if her thinks it's something more serious, I'll go
Back to the OB (they are amazing at squeezing you in in an emergency).

If you are trying to self diagnose this as kidney stones, you not want to do that. It can be gallstones, appendix.. so before you consider anyone giving you advice on what to take orally get properly diagnosed..

And yes I have had them, as a female I was in the emergency room.

Definitely go. When my husband gets them he can't stop moving. Sitting still causes him more discomfort.

I'm a paramedic. I know not not appendix or gallstones, it's on my left side. Also, I'm having pain when urinating on/off.

My husband gets them all the time. He's passed 40+ and had sx 4-5 times to remove them. Nothing at home helps. You can drink a lot of water to help your chances of passing it but it won't help the pain. Go to the doctor so they can determine if it's too big to pass. The ER usually gives him a strong RX pain med and sends him home to try to pass it. That makes it some what bearable until he can get to the doctor.

Keep that appointment. Since you have kidney stones then you gonna need some good drugs.. They will give you pain killers and possibly dissolving agents to help break up and pass the stone(s).. Hang in there it might get worse before it gets better.. I was throwing up my pain was so bad.

Can't do most prescription pain meds due to being pregnant. But maybe my doctor will know of one that is safe during pregnancy. I'm not a fan of painkillers though. I don't like how they make me feel.

I really would only take heavy painkillers as a last resort. If the pain stays at this level, it's livable.

Def keep the appointment, I am sorry I mentioned pain killers, had not idea about you being pregnant. Def let the doctor do this.

I can say the stone has to be larger than 3mm for it to be considered for surgery. If you had one this big, you would know it. If the stone moves at all it might be very intense.

You will get scanned and they will find out what yo are looking at in terms of size. You may be referred to a specialist for this.. they will set you up with a cocktail of safe medication to help break up the stone and pass it.. what it will do is break up and may even dissolve it some so you do have to pass it and the rest you will pee out.

Best of luck with this and again I am sorry I did not know about the pregnancy.

Lemon juice. Drink lots of lemon juice. It helps dissolve them. And I mean pure lemon juice or lemon water.

It may be a urinary tract infection; the pain from kidney stones is usually so acute you end up in the emergency room. Glad you are seeing a doctor tomorrow.

I've had kidney stones and I could feel it moving. It was really painful. I went to ER and got scanned and drugged. Being pregnant that would be out. Sorry! But mine passed through inviting within 24 hrs. I think it was due to dehydration. This happened before I got pregnant but I got dehydrated during oregnancy. Watch that!

Be careful what you are eating that can cause kidney stones in people that are prone to them. There is a compound in spinach and some leafy greens that you have to limit. Can't recall what it is called. Someone here probably knows. Some leafy greens not have as much. Also drink plenty water. But...yeah...don't self diagnose. For your health and your baby...go doc.

You just sparked an idea that is didn't even think about. Going to go to CVS and get the UTI test strips.

It seems like every week I end up with a new "fun" condition that I've never had until pregnant. I fix that problem and a new one comes up. It's like playing medical condition wack-a-mole.

Already have the appointment. I don't eat leafy greens all that often, they taste like what I would imagine grass tastes like.

Since we don't do doctors much, we self treat kidney stones and gallstones at home. We use a product called Stonebreaker by HerbPharm. Dosing is 30 drops in 1/2 cup of purple grape juice, taken twice a day for 10 days. It will break down the stones and you pass them pretty much without pain at that point. My husband has had twinges when he's passed them but generally they are small enough by that point not to be a problem when passing them. The purple grape juice is from experience, not to make it work. This stuff is NASTY. I won't kid you. The purple grape juice is about the only thing we've found that makes it tolerable. :-P My husband usually gets pain relief within about 30 minutes after taking the first dose of this stuff.

That said, I do not know if hydrangea (the main ingredient in stonebreaker) can be used during pregnancy. A good web search will likely find the answer for you (beyond the typical "nothing during pregnancy"). So I guess my caution would be to do a good search for people that have actually taken it safely during pregnancy or look for actual reasons (what it will cause) if taken during pregnancy before you do anything. We swear by this stuff and I keep at least one bottle on hand at all times as my husband is prone to kidney stones.

BTW, lemon juice in water drunk daily is a great preventive if you are prone to stones. The Stonebreaker can be used in smaller amounts daily as a preventive as well.

And please, people, I've given the usual cautionary statements for pregnancy so please keep your comments to yourself. OP asked for home remedies, I gave her one that we use. If she can't use it now, maybe she can in the future....

Kidney problems are no joke. Glad you are getting it checked. I've had a kidney infection, too. I had no insurance and went to ER. Was bumped to the head of the line. In both cases, infection & stone, I could feel where my kidney was. It was apparent after a while that it was kidney pain and not backache/muscle pain.

The compound in spinach and some other foods that has been suspected to cause kidney stones is oxalate. Other foods are high oxalate too, chocolate among them. I have read that almonds have been suspected to increase stone formation, but I'm not a doctor, just an avid researcher.

Getting a stone to pass the junction between you kidney and ureter is intense and unforgettable. You will sweat, scream, pace, vomit, etc. You'll wish desperately to pass out. I've had a 4 mm, and that sent me to the ER (it was my 1st and I thought it was appendicitis as it was right side) at 3 am. It got stuck above my bladder and caused a UTI so bad I needed two rounds of antibiotics and surgery to remove the stone. The UTI was so bad I nearly passed out from the agony of peeing. Afterward urologist said I had a minor kidney infection as urine wasn't exiting properly. This also hurts a lot but is milder than the stone itself.

For those who have stones, I was advised by a urologist that citric acid from citrus fruits helps prevent them. Ymmv.

Fof the OP I think you should go to the doc soon - never take abdominal or organ pain lightly, esp since you are pregnant. You need professionals for this; we are just people on the Internet.

The first time I became aware that I had kidney stones, I ended up in ER screaming and writhing around in pain. I did feel sorry for the poor student nurse who was told to set up an IV and start me on morphine. The cubical looked like there had been a massacre with blood everywhere because I was flailing around so much while she was trying to do this.

That stone was 1 cm long and about 4 mm wide and had lodged itself on the way out. I had to have it surgically removed.

Since then, they've observed much small stones (largest about 3 mm in diameter) and they seem to cause a bruise-like ache in the kidney area, and then when they move down to pass it is like something is being ripped inside me (slightly off to the left or right) when I use the toilet.

The only thing I've discovered that helps is water. I need to remain hydrated ... the minute I become dehydrated that ache in the kidneys starts up. As long as I drink quite a bit of water, it's not too bad.

I would be so ticked off if it's an j section and j need antibiotics. I spent the week 4 to week 9 on antibiotics from a staph infection from an IV in my foot (I have bad veins and it was the only place they could get it and I was going hill fast from an allergic reaction). The metallic taste and stomach upset for 5 weeks was bad enough.

I thought it was muscular as well, but nothing has been helping. I have a muscle relaxer here from when I pulled a muscle in my neck few months ago. It did absolutely nothing.

This AM has not be fun so far. Under the easy things to fix-I have mild UTI and a small kidney stone on left side.

However, was sent to ER because it appears I have something more serious going on. On the office I had a temp of 103. Doctor thinks that the staph infection from my foot has spread to my bones and muscles (osteomyelitis and myostis) which is causing all the pain.

Waiting on results back from lab work, X-rays and ct scan. If it is a severe infection, they will be putting a PICC line in tonight, keep me over night and send me home with IV antibiotics.
