We are eating bad stuff.

My colleagues will eat fried chicken followed by blue bell ice cream, sit down all day and feast on a poboy with fried shrimp and fries. I watch them wash it down with fruit drink or a big coke, followed by more drink throughout the day. I wonder how they are feeling, are they getting heavier? If I would do that just one day I would feel it immediately. I'm patiently waiting for my health conscience eating, drinking descions to show up. My most obvious indication is my clothing. When my clothing stops feeling like its soffucating I know I'm doing good.
But I can't eat what's out there. It's not good for me and most of the general public. I'd rather cook what I want or ask for a lighter version.

I have no problem fitting those things into my food diary from time to time. Overall way of eating is important to health and weight management, but no one food is a culprit. It's not a good idea to eat like that day in and day out. I still try to not judge what others eat because it's not my business and what I eat is none of their business.15

You should see the looks I get because my lunch happened to be 4 eggs fried in butter and a whole package of bacon.
Not to mention all the cheese I eat, nor the big glug of heavy cream in my coffee...and speaking of coffee, the most horrified look I've got was when I throw a hunk of butter in my coffee!
Or that I order 2 double beef burgers with cheese eggs and bacon on them... And give away the buns and fries in favor of a huge green salad.
Yet I'm losing more weight than all those people staring at me! And my health has improved too. Muahahahahaha!!!!

Quite common for some on Keto. It's called Bulletproof coffee. Lol. I usually drink it as breakfast these days. It's a good way to reach the high fat expectations on a keto diet.3 -
Therealobi1 you're right I'm quite J at times. But I regret it when I enter data into the food diary and I've blown way past calories, fat grams, and sodium. This app has been an awakening about what I'm putting in my body. A good/bad awakening. The stuff I used to love actually was changing me for the bad6

Viewing foods as good/bad is not a healthy outlook though. It's just "food". Too much of any one food is not healthy, including broccoli and chicken. Your feelings of guilt about logging foods that put you over certain targets in your diary is concerning, as is your judgement of other people's food choices.
Many, many people here have been successful at learning how to work those foods you described as bad, into their diet in moderation. Cooking more at home and making healthful choices is important, but saying that most food out there is bad for you and the general public is not a prosuctive outlook, in my opinion.7 -

Probably just fine and enjoying their food. Do you know what they eat for the rest of the day? Do you know how much exercise they do? I eat all sorts of junk food on occasion, I'm sure you'd be horrified if you saw me sometimes, and I'm losing weight just fine and am very healthy, thank you very much, Mr Judgy-McJudgy-Pants!5 -

Speaking for myself ( who lost successfully 2 years ago and have maintained since) I still love most of the foods I loved before I started losing weight
I still eat most of them too
Obviously not as often or not in as large portions as before in the case of calorie high items - but no life awakening moments for me - just eat less total calories , that's all

I love junk foods but I will not deny that it leaves me feeling like *kitten* most of the time.3

You don't win extra bonus points for being miserable. The real winner is the person that can eat the most and still be at a weight that they want to be at. Your high horse is nowhere near as delicious as a cheeseburger.14

That's why you enter it before you eat it, then plan your day around it. Or maybe save calories for a few days for a bigger meal with lots of calories. It's all about planning and shifting things around.
I do understand what you are saying though. I often look at people eating and wonder, do they have to do conscious food gymnastics to enjoy that large movie popcorn like I do, or are they some of the lucky ones who intuitively self-regulate their calorie without even thinking about it?5 -
I think that being a newcomer to MFP, you've just come to recognize how important it is to know how many calories we're consuming. The people you are watching probably don't know, just as you didn't--let's say, a year ago. It's a bit of a shock at first, and you do start looking around to see what others are eating. That wears off as you go along and get involved in "macros" and "exercise burns". You need to see the whole picture. You don't yet. It's better to focus on yourself, and don't get waylaid by what others are doing. In a year or so, reread your post and you'll be the first to roll your eyes.7

When I was young I could eat anything without a thought. As I got older it cought up with me, a few pounds a year really adds up. I came to MFP and changed my fitness, portion size and quality of food. I now shop mostly in the produce aisle and rarely get any packaged food. Like the OP I now look at what people eat and what they put in their carts. I think "I can't believe people can eat like that". They are hardly able to move and now rely on electric shopping carts, go figure.0

There is pizza in my future. But now, thanks to the OP I want a fried shrimp poboy too. Thanks! haha. Maybe I'll bake the breaded shrimp instead of fry them, but hey.. as long as I plan my calories for it...!2

Fried pork chop for lunch. With a soda to wash it down. Not uncommon. Losing approximately 1/2 lb per week, like I want. My doctor looks at my bloodwork, checks me out, tells me I'm the healthiest patient he has, and talks sports for the rest of my yearly appointment.3

Concentrate on yourself. Different people can eat different amounts and have different goals. You don't really know the whole picture of their life and health.
Weight loss is about calories not type of food. The foods are not really bad. They do have nutrients and can be part of a healthy diet.
Fit the foods you like into your calorie goal. Have smaller portions of higher calorie stuff and increase portions of lower calorie foods like vegetables. You need to eat in a way you can sustain long term.
If I want fried chicken I fit it in my goals. I can't eat as much when I choose fried chicken so I don't usually choose that but occasionally I do. If I get a burger I might have a salad with it instead of fries. I choose to drink water or unsweetend tea to save calories for food.
Prelogging my food for the whole day has been really helpful for me to stick to my calorie goal and make better choices.

Turkey burger for me today, but it's BBQ'd! ;P Same with my doctor, every time I go see her she does a double take, looks in her chart to see how much I've lost and asks just to make sure it was on purpose lol.3
