Juice Fasting

Hey guys and girls! I'm Chau, and I'm a college student here. My weight loss has been off and on the past month so I'm not trying to hurt myself or anything by not eating so I was thinking of starting a juice fast. It's where I drink at least 5 cups of juice daily and consume water for a two-three week period. I know lots of people against fasting but please provide some input on if I should so it or not. I really want to see how it goes.

    I say don't do it , it's not necessary
    Concentrate on meal planning instead so you find meals that fit in your daily intake

    Any weight lost doing a juice fast usually comes right back when you go back to eating. It's a combination of losing waste from your intestinal tract, losing water weight from not consuming sodium, and losing muscle because you aren't consuming protein. You might lose a little fat, but you will gain if back and more when you eat again because your metabolism will crash from the juice fast. Stop trying to starve or crash diet, it doesn't work!

    Your body needs protein and dietary fats, not much is found in juice. That's not to say juice can't be part of a well rounded diet, but juice isn't a well rounded diet.

    Protein, fat & fiber are filling, again not much of these are found in juice.

    Have you ever been on a liquid only diet for longer than say- a stomach bug longevity? *shudders*
    Id think as a student in college you'd benefit from feeding your body- not to mention that pesky little thing called your brain. There are better ways.

    There is juice and there is JUICE.

    If by juice you mean fruit and vegatables that you make yourself using a slowjuice machine, youll get all the micronutrients you need. If you have a good amount of fat you have more than enough energy stored.

    If by juice you mean store bought orange juice for example then NO.

    I foolishly tried a juice fast (or juice "feast" according to Joe and his disciples) and made it through day 2. Felt like garbage, and realized this was a waste of time/money/energy. Just do some research on how to properly feed your body and take the time to meal prep. :)

    TL;DR: Don't do it.

    Hi Chau! I would definitely recommend *against* a "juice fast". While you might initially lose some weight, you'll likely gain it right back when you start eating normally again. What has worked for me (and I'm down 84 pounds) has been logging practically everything that gets past my lips, eating at a deficit, and increasing my activity. This way, I lose the weight, keep it off, and get healthier, all at the same time. It's definitely not as fast as your plan, but it's sustainable, which might be difficult for even a few days on what you're describing.

    The problem with this is....we need more than micronutrients & fat stores.

    We all have fat stores BUT our bodies don't use fat stores exclusively (I wish). When we lose weight we lose fat+existing lean muscle mass. A juice fast would increase the amount of lean muscle lost. That's partly due to lack of protein (a macronutrient).

    The difference between a juice fast and healthy weight loss is, healthy weight loss actually helps us lower our body fat % along with our weight.

    Did you watch it with a critical eye though? He sells juicers, you know.

    He didnt when he made the documentary the first time around, did he?

    And it still dosnt take away the important thing, its GREAT way to eat (or in this case, drink) enough vegetables, and most of us do not eat enough green stuff.

    Sounds horrible, and 5-6 glasses of juice will still have calories, depending on the juice maybe a lot more than you think. Better to just eat good nutritious food. Definitely drinking more water may be a good idea, but fasting is really a quick fix that doesn't tend to stick.

    Um how does saying "you shouldn't do a juice fast" equate to saying "vegetables and fruits are bad for you" exactly?

    Broccoli is good for you sure, but along with other things you eat that comprise a balanced nutrition and sufficient macros. If you ate nothing but broccoli that wouldn't go well for you but saying that does not somehow imply that broccoli is bad for you...that is just a bizzare logic.
