Is it just me, or does it piss anyone else off that vodka (and wine) have calories???

I was thinking about that the other day! I only say it if I have looked at their diary and if it's closed then I don't even bother.

I agree, If the diary is closed, I don't comment on it! How can I?

I totally agree! I usually don't comment on completes because I am no Dr. I think it is great they are logging though!

when i start drinking, they don't.....(in my mind)....

but yeah really really pisses me off....i like to think of those as "happy calories" or " i won't beat the crap out of some people who run their mouth" calories

I will make a comment of support. I came here to use this site as a resource to help in my weight loss journey. If I make friends it is ok but, I am here to do this for me. I am accountable to myself. I really don't need the cooments. I enjoy the site and the friends I have added. However, if no one ever comment on my dairy or anyother post it will not discount my purpose nor discourage me. Because in the end it will be me and me alone who will do the work and get the job done.

Hi guys - I'm a newbie - and this thread made me wonder: How do you see someone else's food diary?? I guess I thought you couldn't because I've never found any of my friends'. Is it something people can set their privacy settings to hide, or am I just slow?

I can understand if you are being concerned about how much they might be eating and if you are supporting their menu. As long as you are being positive about helping out one another I say its okay. I just wouldn't like it if someone told me in a negative way "oh well you should eat a lot more or you're not gonna lose the weight" Just say "hey you should throw in some veggies or fruit, etc" Its all about being honest and uplifting, if it bothers you that much though...just ignore it and move on.

I am always gentle when making suggestions. I never try to come across. At least I hope I don't. People need gentle guidance, not beat over the head.

I think you hit it on the head: if you didn't check the diary, don't comment.

    Ditto!

Wow thanks for all of your replies, everyone.

Again please don't think I'm judging the person (or anyone). I know I've made it sound like I'm having a go at people.

Really, it' projection. I'm judging myself not anyone else. When I saw the WTGs on a diary completion that was less than ideal I realised that I, myself, have been too liberal with my comments.

I don't check the friend feed that often. Life's busy and I don't have time to post encouragement on every post. So sometimes I blow through the last ten updates and post quick WTGs or Good Jobs.

Now I feel like doing that seems hollow. I want my encouragement to be genuine. I don't want someone to see a positive post from me and think "Blah, that Eric guy always says that no matter what I do".
I guess I don't feel like anyone needs to police anyone else's food consumption or decide what is a good diet and what is not.

I do find it hard to balance being positive and noticing symptoms of eating disorders. Then again, I don't really know my 'friends' on here so should I be so nosey as to 'look out' for them? Maybe I have been caring a little too much.

A side note: sometimes I don't complete my diary. Usually it's because I've given up on that day and I just write the day off. Bad, I know. But I won't click on 'complete' on those days because not everything I ate is in that diary.

Another side note: I too have 'saved up' for alchohol but whenever I do drink I just accept that I'll go over. I'm not saying everyone has to do that I'm just saying what I do.

Dieting is weird. There's science behind the reasons for losing weight in a healthy way yet there are so many specific ways in which people lose weight. So much so that we end up having to be 'politically correct' with each other. A calorie counter and an Atkins disciple will either argue about who's right or agree to disagree. It's so much like religion that really all we can do is just hold ourselves to our own standards and just hope that others aren't harmed due to their way of doing things. So sooo much like relgion :/

I don't tend to post on my friends food dairies, only on NSV's, weight loss, workout ethic, etc.

If their food consumption is reasonably healthy, these other smaller, yet important factors, will follow and be earned and well deserved :)

    I totally agree!! :drinker:

Yes! Love this post! I have a f."friend" who does the oatmeal, tiny bits of snacks, and 500-900 calories worth of alcohol EVERY day. Yes, every day. Maybe it's the same person? Idk... Anyways!

I need some friends who can actually LOOK at my diary before commenting and who doesn't have a problem with me going over theirs. I'm trying get get over an ED and it's taking me 3-4 months to get at least 1,200 4+ times a week. I feel that the random WTGs don't help in any way. I'm trying to push myself to 1,300 or 1,400 and it's so hard when I see those posts(on mine and others diaries) when they are often under 1,000 or do the starvation/alcohol thing. I usually refrain from commenting...for now. I'm trying to work out what I should say, if anything, and how. :S

Also, I'd like some people not to congratulate me on losing weight, not when I'm trying so hard to eat enough to NOT lose(even though I want to)

Anyone want to join me? XD

Yeah I agree here, WTG when someone clearly didnt get their nutrition, ehhhhhh Its kinda counter productive to what this site is supposed to do. Sure they are under but at what cost? Encouragement is great but sugarcoating when they really didnt do well at all is even worse than fake encouragement =/

When I was new to MFP I asked my friends what they wanted honesty or encouragement in the form of WTG's. I got an overwhelming response of WTG's. If I see a diary that's really unhealthy I don't comment. If its good I post a generic positive and then maybe comment on one food. I personally would rather have my friends be honest when commenting on mine. I can take criticism (i'm married and I have kids I've heard it all!)

Cool thread - really enjoyed the read and all the different perspectives.

If I comment I virtually always browse the diary. The only ones I haven't on occasion are for those friends that I know are virtually good health & nutrition angels LOL. Some of my pals eat what I consider to be more, in some cases, much more nutritionally sound diets than me (Em included).

Whether I comment in a critical, suggestive or side stepped positive way or not at all on a diary day that has problems, "imo"*, generally comes down to the specific friend; how well I know them and their average day; do I know or think they can handle constructive criticism; is this out of the ordinary, an extreme or a trend; do I know they are trying but struggling...

*imo - meaning I am also quite sensitive to the fact that we all have different views of what is a good diet - I mean the experts can't even agree on it so how can the layman be expected to?!

@cklbrown - with you on that one. For anyone that has a strong view on their friends comments one way or the other - why not let them know. I have and I probably should do it again from time to time. ie. I posted on my wall awhile back - "I have a thick skin - don't be afraid to speak your mind. If you see something you think I could do better, yell out. I may not take notice but I also won't take offence :)" Or "I need all the encouragement you can give, but please be gentle."

Did I set off this thread? I had one of those days last week but hey, I still logged it, was accountable for it and despite it being a bad thing to do, it wasn't intentional it just happened.

I agree it depends on the person. If people are constantly eating take out and going under I don't think it is worthy of a WTG. If they enjoy a small treat daily whether it be a chocolate, wine or biscuits but have relatively healthy diaries and are under WTG to them!

I think it depends on the person, and we are only human after all. I browse people's diaries often and if they have a one off bad day every now and then I still wtg them, because I know they normally do well.

If someone is WTG'ing on a diary that is way over, that would be concerning.

I agree with you, and will always read the diary before I comment. I've seen diaries with around 1000 cals eaten and 6-700 cals burned through exercise. People will comment saying WTG, but to me that's really unhealthy and just as bad as overeating.

How many units is 700 calories of vodka anyway? Is that one or two shots or something like half a bottle?

Either way I agree with the OP.

  • I just deleted about 30 friends that had their diaries private. I just don't see the point of hiding things. Honesty and taking responsibility for what you eat and how you exercise (and being able to share it) are all part of a lifestyle change.

Surely the person that should hold us accountable are ourselves?

I don't allow public access to my diary because I'm a rather private person. It doesn't mean I have something to hide.

I think the social aspect of MFP is great! It's nice to have a banter about different topics: our struggles, our successes, etc.

However, I think there's a slightly judgmental element to deleting people or not friending on the basis of not having their diary open to friends or the public. This is a lot like Facebook, but running on the basis of weight loss. I don't advertise everything on Facebook. In fact, I had disabled my Facebook entry a couple of months ago because things seem to be a bit superficial (ie, I'm not an extrovert and the thought of eyes roving over my details kind of unnerves me.)

We need to keep in mind that this is about education, or in some instances, re-education because we didn't learn it the first time around. Being supportive regardless of the diary status should be key. Plus they will find out once they stop calorie counting that the weight will come back and they will be back here doing it again because the first round of weight loss didn't stick.

(I don't condone WTG, FTW, etc. for unhealthy activities. This statement is more towards friendship on the basis of diary entries and viewing.)

maybe my diary's just crap but not many people WTG me whether i'm under, over or just right. i will WTG someone if i like what i see. especially if people are eating FAT (that makes me happy) and they're eating their exercise cals. if someone didn't eat too well on a day then i'll comment on their healthiest aspect - maybe i find their breakfast yummy or their snacks are creative. if it's all junk food (literally just mcdonalds), i don't say anything. but i wouldn't just comment on someone's diary when they're under without checking.

Roughly 10 (1 ounce) shots of vodka = 700 calories.

The only time I attempted this (14 shots), I passed out and woke up in a bathtub.

Didn't want to hang out with my buddy vodka for some time after that.

    Anyway...

I don't usually do the WTG because I'm not on here later in the evening unless I bring it up on my phone, which then I have a hard time actually looking at someone's diary. So maybe I should stop being lazy in the evening and start motivating my friends on here :P

Sometimes it's done from a smartphone, which the app does not allow you to check the diary.

I absolutely agree. I hate when I see people say WTG on someones diary then I go and check out that persons diary and everything its in the red. We had a discussion about this on one of my friends feed just yesterday. It is not helping anyone out by encouraging them on days they have eaten really bad. If you want to give someone as WTG inn their diaries, then at least tell them on areas they need to improve on. Some people never check diaries. If I dont check to see what you have eaten, I would not comment.

I won't give them a "WTG" if they stayed under calories but got all of their calories from Burger King (or other crap-food joint). Sure, they are under their calorie goal, but it doesn't justify eating crap, and goes against their goals for losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Having said that, I will make a fun joke about whatever they ate. I still want my friends knowing someone's keeping them accountable.

I think this is a great approach:bigsmile: I did this with a friend who was not drinking a lot of water. She made a status update about drinking more water because her MFP friends were going to call her out hehe

I agree with him ^^^^. I also agree with the poster too because on here it's all about trying to have a healthy eating lifestyle. I am so doggone straight forward I am not giving a nice joke to hold them accountable. I will call them on it if I see it too many times. Most times people will think I am being unsupportive if I just don't comment at all. So I won't and they will delete me eventually.

I would like to comment on the "RED". I know that sometimes some people can be in the red if it is a rest day and MFP still gives them a small amount of calories to eat. Noone that exercises 5 or more days a week should be eating 1200 calories so in that instance it could be red. If all food was healthy it should be a good day or WTG.....
