This was an interesting article and the comments/responses are eye opening. I don't know a women who hasn't experienced this while running or otherwise. It is also across all ages... as old as I am I never expect it and am surprised when it occurs. I actually told off some workers who were making comments in Spanish. They shut up pretty quick when I asked if they would talk that way or put up with anyone who talked that way about their wives or mothers, sisters or daughters. In other situations I have also just ignored the comments and kept on going because you don't know the intent. I have also gone to others on my trail for safety when I have been followed or felt fearful. Please be respectful of everyone and teach the young men in your lives to also be respectful.

So I did end up resting from running today. My shin was hurting me a bit when I woke up and if it's hurting me without even running, I'm taking that as a sign to rest/slow down. I babysat during the day today, which included ~1.5 mile walk roundtrip to the park and many more steps chasing after the little ones, so that definitely counts as my workout for the day. I'm going to attempt a slower 6 miles tomorrow.
@kristinegift I'm with you on the cold/numb butt season lol! And numb fingers/Raynaud's season started for me already too
@_nikkiwolf_ Yep, I was a bit crazy and ran them back to back last year. I actually ended up running the much hillier Baltimore 24 minutes faster than Chicago. Chicago was just a horrible race for me due to many different factors, but I learned from it and made sure all of those things were taken care of the next week....worked out pretty well. Good luck on your marathon tomorrow!

@MobyCarp Like you I switched the mower and snow blower around. We are lucky if we get week or 2 before the heavy snow hits. All the snow we had earlier has disappeared in town. 10km out of town it is a completely different world - 12-20 cm of snow ( 4.7-8in ) Hopefully my final mow of the year - Actually used the mulching blade to pickup the leaves - much easier than raking and bagging.
Well today was the Halloween Howler. 10 km through the Cross Country Ski club bush trails - Gun time was at sunset so a Headlamp mandatory event race. I wore 2 Headlamps - one facing back with the Flashing Red Led turned on. It was a lot of fun tracking around all the bush trails in the dark looking for the Yellow and Green Ribbons, Fluorescent Paint Arrows on the Grass/brush along the edge of the Trails.
Following the glow of other headlamps, wondering why a headlamp was coming towards you ( did I miss a turn ? ) and then it would turn and head away from you ( parallel trails with a short row of brush separating them ). This was a " FUN " Event so not one you really worried about a clock time on-except certain super serious runners- I think they missed out on having a lot of fun. Quite a few costumes especially in the 5km Family Event. Had a few Goblins and Zombies popping out of the shrubs at select points - even a few Trick or Treater's at the AID Stations handing out Jelly Beans, Honey Stinger Waffles, Hot Chocolate (???) and water. Just a lot of fun. Like a Sunday Social run with friends.

After a rest day, I hoped to be able to run 2 miles; 1.82 miles in 15:37 is what the recovering leg was good for.

So far I've just encountered nice people. The closest thing I've had happen was a car came from behind me and seemed to purposely rev their engine to startle me but I couldn't say for sure. Until recently though I was either running trails with other runners or else not seeing anyone at all. Now I'm running with lots of traffic it seems but it's dark and been okay so far. I've been honked at but that's just the owner of the locally owned running shop1 -
No, it was an average 8:36 pace per Garmin. The first mile split was 8:43. I was just running easy, trying not to pound things out; and it came out slower than an easy run would if I were healthy. Average HR 123, max 138. Garmin thinks top of Zone 2 is 128; it says 83% of the time I was in Zone 2.
I think the last time I tried to run a 7:40 pace was at the Rochester Marathon. But yeah, I might benefit if I could learn to run a consistent 9 minute mile without someone else pacing for me. That would probably hold the HR under 120 for much of the run.0 -

This is really infuriating that many women have to deal with this. Fortunately, I haven't had too many problems as I usually run in either the trail that is usually full of other runners or through the safe neighborhoods near me. I've heard a comment or two but that's about it. The stories about being followed really scares me.

Some of these stories are really quite scary. I get cars/vans beeping at me a lot, which in the dark scares the living daylights out of me, but that's about it. I actually wear a hoodie/jumper tied round my waist because that seems to stop most of it if I don't have my bum on show. Only once did a van full of guys turn round to come back and shout at me again but I reported them to the company they were driving for and, fortunately, the manager I spoke to had 3 teenage girls so he was SERIOUSLY angry.
I guess all those decisions that we make as women, e.g. not to run certain places at certain times on our own because it's not safe, isn't really something I've thought about before. I do all those things too because I want to stay safe, but the fact that men don't need to do that and that they therefore have so much more freedom wasn't something that really hit home until I read that. It's a rubbish world we live in really. This is 2016, how is this still a thing?1 -

Just had my last planned run of the month (may go out for an easy short run tomorrow depending how I feel). Plan called for 8.5k tempo run, but I decided as has been a great month I was going to go out and try and get a negative split sub-1hr 10K, (my previous best being 1:00:38).
Tried a different pre-run routine including some cereal and a 20-minute easy spin on my bike, (indoors on a trainer). Certainly my quads felt looser than they normally do at the start of a run so I took that as a good sign and also used the bike for a cooldown after the run. Will see later how I feel.
Was still very foggy/misty with lots of dew so had to be careful with footing, and the dogs all seemed especially hyper this morning, so was a bit like an obstacle course and literally had to jump over one at one point, but otherwise conditions were good for a fast run (12C/54F, cloudy and no wind). Proved to be so as brought my 10K PR down to 57:46!
Even better than that I felt I paced it brilliantly and (apart from an oddly fast third kilometre) I sped up each km - pretty much perfect way to achieve a negative split!!
All in all a great end to a fantastic month:

I went out this morning for my longest speed session EVER and I'm really proud of myself for finishing it close to my goal marathon pace and with a 1 second negative split (1:04:57 and 1:04:56!). I put this workout at the end of a 73 mile week (biggest weekly mileage ever!) and the day after a 14 mile run so my legs would be as tired as possible to best simulate 26.2 race conditions. And it wasn't easy. I hit a rough patch mentally after a long, steady-but-shallow uphill in mile 11 and let myself have a pity party mile, then reset at the next mile and put my game face on for the rest of the run. And then I ran my four fastest miles of the morning.
One more long run next weekend and then a major taper. This workout was my confidence booster, and I'm glad I pushed through the last 4 miles when I could have just scraped it after the one crappy mile. I felt strong in the last half hour despite the huge weekly mileage and huge weekend mileage, which gives me confidence that after a taper I will be able to pace as well if not better on race day

I was planning to run today but I think I am going to rest and get back into routine tomorrow. The front of my right ankle is really sore after yesterday's 12 miles. It feels like the tendons.
Today's high is expected to be 94 so probably won't find me doing an afternoon run!0 -

Today's run was pretty good. Mike and Fergus came with for the first three miles and then I continued on for another two and a quarter without them. My knees were a little achy at the beginning, but it was my hips that really were a bit of a pain going into the my last mile or so. Not surprising since it was a pretty damp, misty morning. If it weren't for the aches, this is my favorite kind of weather...cool but not cold, a little misty and foggy but not so much that it is hard to see, wet but not raining.
@_nikkiwolf_ Thanks and I know you are right. Now that I am looking, I don't really see anything close enough to home on Thanksgiving Day anyway. But, there is a race right here in town on December 3, so I think am going to sign up for that one. I took your advice and checked last year's times and there were at least 15 or so others that are in my speed range or slower, so I shouldn't be dragging behind everyone. It isn't really the fact of being last that bothers me...I would just feel bad that everyone has to wait for me to pack it up, I think. I know, it seems silly, but there it is. It sounds silly when I say or type it...but my brain doesn't really care and it is still gonna think it. LOL.

@shanaber I don't eat a big breakfast daily, but I have brunch usually on Sundays after my run and, you're right, it does taste better! Glad to hear you had a pain-free run!

I wanted to run a mile in under 10 mins yesterday, I was feeling good and pace felt good so was gutted when I clocked 10:03.
So another mile to take me to 33 miles for the month 2 over target. I plan a run tomorrow to finish off the month hopefully on a high.2 -

This morning's run was not the kind of run I was hoping for. I'm blaming it on not drinking any coffee beforehand (didn't think I needed any), but probably not the whole reason. I wanted to run a comfortable 10 minute pace, but for some reason that seemed very hard for me today. I just didn't feel like I had any fuel in the tank, and I'm not really sure why. After pushing myself pretty hard the first mile or so, I accepted the fact that my comfortable pace today was not going to be what I thought and I ended up finishing in about 62 minutes. Disappointed, but on the positive side the slower pace resulted in minimal knee and shin pain.2
