Been a tad delinquent posting runs here. Ended with just shy of 109 miles this month, the fewest miles since January. I did however feel like I need a break after the marathon early in the month. I'm still way ahead of my yearly goal of 2k miles, which currently stands at 1885 miles. I'm officially getting back on the wagon in November since all of my runs the past few weeks have felt pretty good and i feel like I'm fully recovered.

@_nikkiwolf_ Awesome job on the marathon. You put in the work all summer and it paid off.

@MNLittleFinn Adding speedwork for a marathon is a bit different than a half. I was able to handle all 10x100 strides sessions & the threshold work in my plan, but the z5 stuff kicked my butt. I do feel it's important to mix up your paces, but I felt like I got the best bang for my buck on the marathon pace runs. Doing a 10 mile pace session during a 16 mile long run was a huge confidence builder. I ended up doing as much as 16 @ pace during an 18 mile run. These sessions were about once every 4 weeks. The strides were about once a week, sometimes twice. The threshold work was in the 2nd mesocycle and the vo2max in the 3rd. About 4-5 sessions of each. My personal feelings on the yasso session is you don't run hard enough to get into threshold typically on an 800, and you are not running far enough to get the benefit if you did. It's a time predictor only, and it's a long workout to do the complete session, like 10 miles. 10x800 is 5 miles, 9x400 recovery is 2.25 miles, with a 2 mile warmup and a cooldown it's a long session that really doesn't give you a lot of benefit, in my opinion at least. I think a 10 mile tempo at MP would be a better indicator and give better training results.

    10/14: 3.1 Mile Run
10/15: 10 Mile Run. Planned to go 12, but my hamstring started acting up around Mile 5. It didn’t hurt bad, but it wasn’t normal, so decided to cut my run short. 
10/16: 45 Minutes of Stationary Bike
10/17: 45 Minutes (12 Miles) of Stationary Bike
10/18: Body Pump and 30 minutes (7.5 miles) on Stationary Bike

10/23: 5 mile run on Zero Runner – Wish I tried this sooner, but I thought I’d still have pain when bending my knee.

10/28: .9 mile run: Hamstring Test Run that went very well
10/29: 10 miles on Zero Runner
10/30: 2 mile run on pavement: Hamstring felt good…just a little tight and tender on turns and hopping to avoid mud. Also did 5 miles on the Zero Runner
10:31: 3 mile very slow run: Hamstring is worst in the early morning so I took it very slow and focused on form. Not as great as previous test runs.

106.8 miles of running / 64.4 miles on Stationary Bike – Eliminated goal due to leg pain

    2016 Races Completed:

    Upcoming Races:
Turkey Trot – Appleton, WI (5 Miles) Nov 24
BMW Dallas Marathon (HM) Dec 11
    Cowtown Marathon (Full) Feb 26

Happy to be running outside again, but taking it really slow. I can’t wait to be back to normal again. In the meantime it feels good to be running for real and have the wind in my hair...even if the mileage is low and I'm going slow. Temps in the upper 60’s this morning…perfect running weather!

Picked up a new pair of shoes on Saturday!! I got the Saucony Kinvara 7s. They have a 4mm drop compared to my ISO 2s that have an 8mm drop. They also feel quite a bit lighter. So far, I really like them. I also tried some Hoka Ones and Altras at the store. The Hoka Ones were way too squishy feeling. I liked the Altras, but they were such a huge difference compared to my current shoes, I didn’t want to jump right down to those. I really liked the toe box on them since I have wide feet. I’ll probably go back and buy those in about a month or so and gradually rotate them in.

I need to catch up on all the postings. We just won a new contract at work so it’s going to be super busy at work for the next several weeks.

@RunsOnEspresso Being stopped mid-race is awful. Those races aren't cheap and it's completely unfair! Sorry you had to experience that.

@MNLittleFinn I love it when race schedules and training schedules match! Yay!

@louubelle16 I don't currently have a Garmin or use Strava, so I track shoe mileage on runningahead.com, which is where I log all of my running into. It also keeps track of race PRs, can run reports, etc. I like that it isn't dependent on having a particular device.

@_nikkiwolf_ Congrats on finishing your first marathon! How exciting!!

Y'all have convinced me that 1) I need new shoes and 2) one of those pairs should be Cascadias. The Cascadias were on my list this summer when training for Ragnar Trail, but since I didn't know how much I would even like trail running, I went with a clearance pair of Reeboks. I like them, but hope to increase the trail running once my marathon is done.

As far as the challenge goes, I'm ending October 10 miles short of my goal for the month. I'm okay with that. On the plus side, I ran my fastest 5k in over a year this weekend. I'm also on track to hit 1,000 miles for my running career by the end of November AND will be on track for my highest mileage year yet. I'm pretty excited to reach these milestones.

High five to everyone who hit their October goals!

Not a bad month. I'm in a funky mood. I corrected someone yester that "I use to be a runner". I am no longer. But honestly, I know I've made leaps and bounds this month- improvement isn't over.

Thanks for all the support everyone! It's been great being able to hang out and stay semi-focused.

You'll get there again Elise. You're just on hiatus that's longer than you'd like.

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments! And for reading that long race report - I was on the phone with my sister yesterday, and five minutes were enough to cover all the details she wanted to hear and then some more. I'm not saying she wasn't super supporting and happy, but she didn't want to hear about splits or nutrition or elevation or anything else; she seemed to think time, weather and the fact that I finished were all relevant information that she needed. Non-runners, tsk! ;)

I dreaded getting out of bed today, because I heard so many horror-stories about the day after (including one of my colleages who told me her nephew couldn't walk for days, so she actually called and asked if I needed help getting to work :) ), but it was fine. My main complaint is a huge blister on the middle toe of my left foot. My quads are a bit sore, and in the hot tub/under the shower I notice the spot on my back where my hydration pack seems to have chafed. Other than that, I'm good. Rather tired, though - I got 9-10 hours of sleep last night, and still nearly fell asleep at my desk this afternoon; so I skipped out of work a bit early to nap on the couch instead. I'll go to bed early tonight again! After training for the race with Hal Higdon's "Intermediate 2" plan, I think I'll try out his recovery plan now. It starts with three days of no running. Toughest training plan ever! ;-)

Oh, and funny note regarding that pacer: I got a mail today from a guy who was running in our little group of runners for the first 17km (not sure if it is creepy or nice that he looked up my full name from the results list and traced my work mail address down with that, but I guess he wanted to be nice). He wanted to congratulate me on finishing. Then he went on asking if I actually stuck with that pacer for the entire time, since he saw that I finished shortly after her. And then he commented more on what a lousy job she did - seems it's the general consensus that pacers are supposed to lead a pace group rather than provide roaming entertainment.
I guess learning to plan my own pace is/will be a valuable skill. At my last half, I watched both the 2:00 and the 2:10 pacers set out like the devil was after them - like @Stoshew71 wrote, for them it was probably not a bit deal, but if the goal time is just barely at the limit of what you could achive, that's probably going to kill you in the second half...

    Thanks, Calvin
    Both are Statues.
Looks like they were added after the decline of the neighborhood, in an effort to spruce it up.
I love deviating my route every then and again, you never know what you'll find #runsafe

Seriously I am surprised there wasn't any dog hair in the picture :) I do have a lady who cleans for me every couple of weeks or so. It is a long story but we hired her when my daughter was little (20+ years ago!) because the family she lived with/worked for lost their jobs and could no longer pay her. She pretty much comes now when she wants to or if I specifically call her. If you all were closer I would send her over - she's wonderful and a part of our family now.

@RunsOnEspresso - there is no failing here! You got out and ran, maybe not as much as you wanted to or thought you could but you did it! Set a new goal for next month and go aim for it. Every time you get out that door is a success!

Yes, I kinda smashed my goal for October - didn't know Alan was gonna want a partner/goad for his training, so that was an additional 4/4.5 miles/week. And then I decided to add on a HM distance every month, so....

But I'm gonna keep the same 155 as the November goal. Figured with my history, there's a decent chance I need to maintain a smashed-goal for a couple months before it becomes something I'll regularly achieve.

    Upcoming Races:
    12-Nov: FUMC 5K, Warner Robins
    03-Dec: Reindeer Run (10K), Macon
    26-Dec - 01-Jan: Random running in JAPAN!
14-Jan: Museum of Aviation HM, Warner Robins
    04-Mar: Albany/Snickers HM, Albany
25-Mar: Cherry Blossom Road Race 10K, Macon
08-Apr: Running for Ronald 10K/15K, Macon

Dang that floors clean! Wanna come over? My whole house is tile.
@elise4270 - I have a lady who cleans for me every couple of weeks or so. It is a long story but we hired her when my daughter was little (20+ years ago!) because the family she lived with/worked for lost their jobs and could no longer pay her. She pretty much comes now when she wants to or if I specifically call her. If you were closer I would send her over - she's wonderful and a part of our family now.

Yes. I need her. Let me know if she has connections this way. DH has been saying he's going to get someone for the last year....*impatiently taps foot*..... He just doesn't understand how happy I'd be. Or maybe he's just bein' a dh. Haha!

She is the ONLY person my husband allows to clean his office! I don't even try any more :) She is coming tomorrow because my SIL is arriving Wednesday from Dubai I will ask about any connections in Oklahoma

    Happy Halloween!

Yesterday: 13.2 miles (just for "fun") in 80 degree F (~27 C) heat on a half-mile loop. The hand bottle was a life-saver.
Today: 6.6 miles easy, in order to reach goal.

@_nikkiwolf_ Congratulations on your 1st marathon!
@RespectTheKitty Congratulations on hitting 8.2 miles!
@RunTimer Those figure sculptures look so cool!

Also congrats to everyone who raced, met their goals, didn't meet their goal but ran a whole bunch of miles, set any PRs, etc.

Ended 14.3 miles over my conservative goal of 50. This month included running my goal official first half marathon (I did a "test" 3 weeks earlier that we shall just ignore). I still can't believe that I did it. This has been such an amazing year of progress for me.

I made a graph, because of course I would. Miles run per month and average steps/day for the past 12 months. August was my biggest month - despite the heat I was getting in the training miles, but then I did the test half marathon in September and cut down some miles after that, plus then tapering before the HM and recovering after. Kind of interesting to see! October steps are also high because of one new and energetic dog!

I will see you all in the November thread! Off to think about my goals for the month.

    Cheers and Happy Halloween!

I somewhat recouped from my brutal 4 mile run and ended the month with 25 min strength training. Yay

Congrats to everyone whether you made your goal or not! If you ran a single mile that's more than most people :p and @elise4270 ONCE A RUNNER, ALWAYS A RUNNER!
