After 20+ years of admin'ing and moderating forums, here is what I know. It is a natural cycle that:- people come to a forum
- become a regular, instigate/assgrab/and folly with the best of them
- they get sick of it and lose that warm fuzzy feeling because of the futility of it
- and they fight the very thing they participated in and eventually move to a new place to start the cycle over again.
The normal time frame is usually 2 years.
Some can tolerate it longer.
20+???? I call bs. You aren't old enough
I just shut down an outdoor forum I owned that I start in 1997. I have been a moderator on a political discussion board and a few gun boards since 2002, as well as moderating a few other public boards similar to this area.
I used to run a Dial-in BBS back in the late 80's and 90's (First modem was a Hayes 300 baud). I ran the Unix chat and discussion servers on campus since that time as well. Being in education I also ran VAX/VMS hosted terminal services for the Internet resources back to (some ARPANET), BITNET, TELNET, LISTSERV, and GOPHER. That was before any GUI, so I still ahve my orignal Netscape .9 beta installer for Mac, which changed everything.
I took my first programming classes on TRS-80 computers and learned BASIC, PASCAL, and FORTRAN. That was 7th grade in the early 80's.
My favorite was my TI-99.
Been doing this for a very long time. I am that computer nerd. lol.
This just made me swoon.
Agreed, I was thinking about reporting you for talking nerd dirty Tim.
Man, Here I have been trying to act manly and feign sex appeal, and I could just be the geek that is I...wth?1 -
Some people seem to have their cliques and others think they are pro trolls
But mfp boards are so tame that I suggest anyone who cannot handle this place never venture to other boards on the internet6 -

i'm pretty intermittent in here and in the debate zone as well. it's actually very like my north-american high school experience. bunch of people i have very little in common with, having fun in ways that don't do much for me, and holding big noisy conversations on topics i don't care much about.
i remember that high school was rough because i had to be there even though it did great heaps of nothing for me. in terms of meeting my psychological macros, it was like having to eat a bale of hay every day. this is also like huge heaps of hay, but contextually it's optional. so that makes it more like /meh, a little socializing would be nice but this collection will probably leave me with ulcers and still wouldn't do much for me . . . so just smarter not to.
i kind of hate the 'if you don't like it don't read' brushoff after decades on various forums, because it's usually just a convenient way to refuse all accountability. it skips over the fact that people have to read what they don't like in order to find out that they didn't like it. but, yeah. i think that what happens is kind of inevitable; those who 'don't like it' on a consistent basis vote with their feet so things tend to get very incestuous and self-validating among the ones who remain.
a little reality-checking never does too much harm. and those who don't like it can always just skip past the thread

But seriously, I think that people are generally less accepting of others in these times. Really. I think that. This is a good topic for all of us to be reminded.....3

This ^^ exactly ..
Whilst many subsequent posts after I went to bed seemed to miss the whole point..
There is a difference between snarky fun and malice..
I realise Mfp boards are relatively tame..but I think everyone should have the right to post..
If peoples posts are met by positivity, even light hearted snark....and keeping in mind the rules for posting as set out by mfp if we all follow those rules then everyone should be happy right??
Yeah ..I know..perfect world and all..lol
But honestly....I keep coming back to the pack mentality thing ..
I guess it grates on my nerves to let packs(anywhere) determine outcomes ..
Thank you all for your comments...It's nice to see a discussion with differing opinions...not degenerate into mayhem ...

It's would be fun if everyone dressed up like the celebrities who sang it originally. We can have Stevie, and MJ, and Cyndi Lauper.......who wants to be Kenny Rogers?0 -
