Hip flexor problem

Hey guys, i have got problems with my hip flexor and socket! Everytime i lift my left knee to hip height my hip pops and i get a sharp pain in my groin! This subsides as soon as i lower my knee but it is causing problems when i workout! ... any ideas what is wrong?

you do need to see a doctor if the pain is sharp. it might be something as simple as impingement or mis-tracking that a physio can help you put right. but fwiw i can tell you that inflammation inside my hip capsule presented to me as a pain in the front of my hip, at the groin. i argued with my rheumatologist about it for two years before she shut me up with a cortisone shot inside the joint.
hips are nothing to mess around with. i've only ever had 'mild' stuff from mine but even that can hand out some really big pain.

I dont know how i would have got that though... i am only 21 and have never done much exercise until this year... i used to be a keen horse rider but havent done that for 3 years0

And it literally causes no trouble unless i raise my knee up to hip level0

I raise it lots in my HIIT and kickboxing workouts0

Could be nerve damage. I'd say work around it until it heals. You may also want to take a magnesium and B vitamin supplement, or eat foods rich in those things.2

I don't think Doctor Google is the doctor you need to see. Problems with joints aren't something to mess around with.7

Have you tried doing stretches for your hip flexor, hamstrings, lower back? My hip frequently pops out of joint and has a similar feeling, but stretching it helps prevent it when exercising and at other times I'm not trying to make it pop out.2

I do stretches most days just to loosen everywhere up, i will definitely take your advice and focus on those areas tomorrow... thank you lovely0 -
You need an MRI. Please see a doctor and stop doing the movement that aggravates it until you do. If it's and injury, you could make it worse. If it's a strain, it's not going to get any better.
You're young, is the exercise really worth a permanent, debilitating injury? That's what you could be heading towards. Being the youngest person to need a hip replacement isn't the kind of fitness record you want to be setting.4 -

It does sound like that.. especially if you do a lot of ab exercises or you sit a lot, both of which tighten the iliopsoas. Lay off the kickboxing & abs for awhile, and try this stretch every 2 hours for 30+ seconds:

Once a day isn't enough. Set an alarm if you forget.
If it doesn't improve soon, you might have a labral injury or something else going on, and you may need to see a specialist to get it sorted out.

I went because of hip issues, it was so painful.
Had a bone scan to make sure all was ok. Mine wasn't even popping, that would have freaked me out

Despite you getting cross at people who say it - the ONLY answer is to see a doctor. Googling and asking for advice from total strangers on the internet is dangerous and could cause you to end up in a wheelchair. Without proper examination and just going ahead and doing what someone suggests, could actually be aggravating YOUR problem which could result in irreversible damage. No knowledgeable person will suggest someone treats a condition in a certain way without examination. Someone may have had something that sounds the same and they did such and such that may have helped THEM, but what YOU have may not be that and you may well be damaging yourself by taking advice!
TL;DR - rest until you see a doctor.4 -

yeah, wasn't saying you have r.a. just telling you the background of the only information i really know about hips.
something that's been helping me a lot lately has been glute activation work. there's lots of google information on that and it should be pretty benign as home care. might help.0 -

Then go to a Medicaid clinic
You have a significant functional issue there that no google search can diagnose
Anybody giving you an online diagnosis, reassurance or treatment plan is being unethical and potentially reinforcing potential long term damage ..who knows?
My inner tendon on my right adductor clicks in some movements with no pain, so I adjust what I do accordingly but I've had anything serious ruled out

If your concern is that a doctor would order you to stop exercising and to increase the amount of food you eat until your regain sufficient weight, you may want to consider whether your choice of continuing to exercise is helpful or detrimental to your health.
Resolving the issue that is making you unable to consume the national health care services your taxes pay for sounds like the first priority you should concentrate on. Even before MFP or exercise!

My bmi is only 18.5 so im not concerned about that... i live in the middle of nowhere and dont drive atm so the only way to get to a doctor is walk miles or taxi but i have a special needs child who needs to stay away from sick people so cant take him to a doctors, o have no family here or friends to have him...i have anxiety so physically cant even phone a doctor let alone go to one...lots of reasons0 -
I had this exact issue with my right hip and a physio helped me. She set me up with a set of gentle exercises, and it's been a couple months now and I no longer have pain and clicking in that area.1

Truly sorry to hear that. Yet... you sort of prove the point I was making. Which is that resolving the issues that are stopping you from being able to see a doctor (such as the anxiety you are experiencing) is more important that engaging in exercise. Your untreated mental well being is holding your physical well being hostage.
You are 21yo. The health improvements you are achieving with kickboxing and cardio are... minimal. Marginal. Quite possibly counterproductive to your overall health, because they may be impeding weight regain and possibly be causing long term physical damage to your hip. By contrast, the health improvements you would achieve by addressing your anxiety and any other similar issues that are holding you back would be exponentially more valuable.
I've met a number of people who woke up in their 40s realising they've spent most of their lives spinning their wheels self medicating underlying psychological issues and brain chemistry imbalances. Food? Booze? Drugs? Withholding food? Excess Exercise? Toxic Behaviours? You name it. People do it. All to avoid actively addressing underlying issues.
(You mention 18.5 If you're approaching this from the bottom, be aware that Dr. Google points out that most re-feeding protocols aim for a BMI of 20. Apparently brain chemical and hormonal imbalances often need people to proceed past 18.5 before they will correct. Also note that anxiety (usually about the regain) apparently peaks just short of the target weight and reduces significantly as target weight is achieved)
Anyway: don't know you... or anything about you. Just some things that came to mind.5
