How we perceive ourselves versus how we really look.

I wasn't sure where to post this. A while back I saw a really neat link to a comparison photo. You looked at a lineup of women and guessed which one you most looked like. Then you entered your actual measurements and it showed you which one you actually were closest to in size. Does anyone remember that or know where I can find the link? It was really interesting.

that, really is. i look in the mirror and see HUGE. finding others my height and weight, theyre not fat AT ALL. little portly, but not how i see myself. thanks for the link!

A lot of people lie -- badly -- on mybodygallery. So that's really a hard site to use to get a grasp on things.
I struggle greatly with this whole thing about body image, especially since our mirror at home is a "fat mirror" (my profile picture there is taken in it). I get glimpses of myself in other reflective surfaces and don't know what to do with that information.
The other thing I struggle with is that although I no longer see myself at my highest weight, I am stuck with the mental image of me at about 20 pounds ago. That's what I see looking at my profile picture, that's what I see looking in the mirror.
Sometimes an old thread crops up with a post under my old user name with me at that weight, and I can see the difference, but that only happens rarely.5 -
II still don't always feel good about myself despite other people telling me that I look great. It's really, really hard to shake off old insecurities. I'm so used to having them, it's hard to let it go and see what other people see.
Agreed. I pretty much always feel pretty bad about the way I look, even though I know it really isn't warranted and I need to give myself a break.0 -
When I was 360lbs I always thought I looked way smaller than I was? Like I'd see someone at 250lbs and think that I was so much smaller. Clearly wasn't the case. BUT now I struggle so bad with actually knowing how I look. If I have a good day I worry that I'm just thinking I'm smaller again. Or I'll see someone with the same measurements as me and I just feel like a whale compared too. Its so hard.0

Not for me. I tried that site before and I always get the same answer: Nothing found.
It seems that small older ladies' bodies are not part of that gallery. How sad is to find out that once you reach certain age you don't count or exist anymore.

When I was 260lbs+ I thought I was much thinner, now I am 170lbs I feel much larger.
Yay for brain muddles..4 -

Oh no! Sorry! Ignore that site and look at your own pictures instead. I like to compare current pictures to old ones, it helps a lot to see the changes. When I look in the mirror sometimes I don't even see the difference- partly because I never felt as big as I was. But it's very clear in pictures!

Honestly just depends on the day for me. Sometimes I feel huge and others I think I've almost reached goals. My view of myself is annoying. Maybe it's bc I've been to extremes and all over the place with my weight all the time my mind never really gets settled in the first place.3

Sometimes I think I look so good but then I see myself in the mirror naked while walking and notice that EVERYTHING JIGGLES!! Haha!
Oh well health is really the most important thing and I have that back for now.3 -
In high school I was convinced I was plus sized, my thighs were enormous, and I was only average looking. When looking at those pictures now I wonder what the heck I was thinking - I was pretty cute and thin on top of it. Whats crazy is I have twin daughters who are the image of me at their age, except they have a body type that will likely never be plus sized, and they're beautiful.3

Edit: jiggle sounds like a strange word after so many times typing it...4 -

Twins. I didn't feel how big I was when I was at my largest. I kept my largest pair of pants that I was bursting out of. I can't wrap my mind around it now, because I can get a sense of it at this point.3 -

This is sort of me. I'm now buying UK10/US6 clothes and cannot fathom how I can cram myself in there and yet, they mostly fit just fine with room for a bit of shrinkage as I continue to lose. I think I look quite good fully clothed but naked, man that changes hourly! I think I'm going to have to get pretty much to goal before I stop looking in the mirror and thinking I'm much bigger than I am in reality. I guess not being a youthful firm 20 year old doesn't help, ha!1 -

I think for those of us with body shapes that don't changes significantly, it can be harder to see the differences in ourselves because everything shrinks proportionally, so we're basically the same, just taking up less space and getting to grips with what that is in reals is tricky.6 -

Yes. I saw a slight difference after about 50 pounds, but my stomach seems bigger i think because i lost most evenly, And then arms and legs are shrinking now Big belly was there all along, But just looks more pronounced for now0 -

The thing for me is that my body shape did change to some extent from what I was used to. I always had hips that were exactly even with my bust. Now they're 4 inches smaller. They just -- fell off. That's why I can see some of the difference. I can see the point where it changed. I can't see the change after that.1 -
I didnt realize i had back fat till it left me. Only real change iv noticed in 65 pounds. Im 167 now and im very curvy so i cant imagine i have THAT much more to go. The belly fat beter start shrinking before im like a pregnant stick figure XD
Its interesting not realizing we were so big before but second we start changing it all the realization seems to hit and we feel fatter the skinnier we get. Heres hoping its just a phase! lol1 -
I noticed how slim my knees are while I was driving today. I mean, I still seem to have oddly chunky knees but I was like, wow, where'd the width go all of a sudden?!
That and not need to make sure my face is just so in pictures so I don't look huge. People can just take a picture at any angle and it's totally fine. That surprises me because I thought it was just my face before!2 -
I didn't notice how much weight I was gaining until I saw photos of myself on vacation. My clothes size hadn't changed, thanks to vanity sizing, so it was easy to fool myself that I wasn't really fat. Until I saw what I look like to the camera.
When I lost the weight (45 lbs), again I didn't feel like I had changed all that much. I see myself naked in the mirror every day and see all the flaws. However, this summer on vacation I saw a photo where you can see my legs and there is a big difference.1
