Weight loss scams and how to spot them

This is my favorite video response to things like this.1

Lose weight just by walking!
Oh yeah, it does mention "Participants also followed the meal plan included with every TreadClimber" at 00:30 in tiny, hard to read letters at the bottom of the screen.
That wouldn't have anything to do with it would it? Maybe eating less than they are buring? Nah!

Does it sound too good to be true?1
-
Anything that tells you to take something, while eating a balanced and/or low calorie diet. Isn't the purpose of taking something, to begin with; so that you don't have to change your diet?1
-
Pretty much, if it sounds too good to be true, it isn't true. There is no substitute for eating a good, well balanced diet with the appropriate amount of calories for your weight and activity level and getting off the couch and moving your body enough to get your heart rate up to 60%-80%. Save your money for good food and a membership to a gym.2

My favorites are the scams that say in fine print "as part of a diet and exercise regimen", as if that's just a minor part of it and the scam pills, drink, etc is the major contributor.0

There's some good programs on beachbody. I don't do shakeology but some people swear by it. But the workout dvds and even 21 day fix which gets you on board with proper portions, are great.1 -
Someone I have been friends with for years has pretty much stopped talking to me now because I refuse to buy into the program she's used to lose 92 pounds (Isagenix). Sorry, but not eating for 2 days to "cleanse" does not sound appealing and apparently I'm poisoning myself by using whey protein that doesn't come from some special type of cow in New Zealand.3

+1/2.
I think the portion control piece of 21DF can be a good tool for people (like me) who need more structure than an IIFYM-type approach (I have not purchased the containers from BB; I Googled until I found the measurements). However, I believe the clean eating/food lists go unnecessarily overboard. I also love their workouts. That said, many of their supplements are chock full o' woo, and I'm just not sure that the workouts balance out the woo.1 -
This could use a bump.2

I like the ones that say gain x amount of lean muscle in x amount of days. while not promoting weight loss its saying you can gain a lot of muscle in a certain time period0

I know far too many intelligent people that fall for this stuff and use these products. A friend lost a lot on Isagenix, but doesn't know how to eat without it so when he gains, he goes back to Isagenix.
Another person I know is "Senior Gold" with Plexus. How she convinces people to buy these products is beyond my comprehension, yet she does! And, they're $$!
A good friend is a Beach Body Fitness Coach. She has no real training. She isn't a licensed personal trainer, sports medicine or strength coach, yet she passes herself off as a fitness coach and actually has clients and coaches under her! She sells those dang shakes too!
I don't understand it! You know what I hate, especially the Plexus lady, they're exploiting people's weakness and promising them excellent health! They're playing to people's fears and it disgusts me! I wish there was more regulation...7 -
Great timing, I spotted a fabulous one at the community market today.... on the stall that sold some kind of turmeric drink, and was promoting some weight loss program:
"If you don't lose AT LEAST 2kg in one week we will pay you $100".
Which is a pity because there are some interesting things written about turmeric, so the product itself might have some value but such a stupid banner made me walk away.
I didn't ask how much I would have to pay them to try out their magical weight loss system, but I think we can take a good guess that it's more than $100!
It definitely falls into the category of "if it seems too good to be true....."6 -

Herbalife if used properly with wholefoods and exercise is not bad. But Herbalife on its own is bad.1 -
And its featured on myfitnesspal. A detox diet works for me just fine so long as I have wholefoods3

What exactly are you detoxing that your liver and kidneys aren't?
(And don't say toxins. Tell me EXACTLY what toxins.)7 -

Then it's the food and exercise that helps you, not the herbalife.4 -

Where is Herbalife featured on MFP?

Herbalife is food in another form, unfortunately these days you can't eat healthy even if you tried as even organic produce is in question for the quality of soil its planted in, the amount of water plant gets etc.... Herbalife has a seed to feed concept which means when the seed is planted till the time it is picked, then produced into herbalife products, till the time it is shipped to a destination and ingested by the human body it is tested all the way. Herbalife has invested over US$150million dollars in research and development to make sure that the products are state of the art.

Hahaha, I love how this thread about scams was bumped by someone promoting the Herbalife scam! Thanks!10

I dislike the advertising lies and hype produced to make a quick sale on television (with the little ticking timer) and urgent threats that "this deal will end soon, CALL NOW!"2

Just giving posts much needed bumps.3

We can make this a very short list.
If it has the words "diet" or "weight loss" in it, it's a scam.
If you get to and maintain a good fitness level, and eat a healthy well rounded diet, you should have no trouble maintaining a healthy body weight.
It wont cost you a lot, and people would not be making billions of dollars a year off it.

Here you go

Anything that involves a magic machine/device that's advertised as working every single muscle in the body and has manic looking shredded models using them. There's no way they got their physiques using that dumb *kitten*.

When this "miracle"- whatever it is this week- has taken over the life of someone you used to know like some kind of invasion of the body snatchers.....run!
Are you trying to convince me, or yourself?
So and so lost 20lbs in 5 months!
Yea thats 1lb a week. -500/day. I dont think it was your pink drink or the $50 probiotic or the $120 protein shake.

In simple terms, unless they tell you is going to be a long, difficult journey, eating right and excising, its probably fake. Your next best easy/even more difficult option is fasting. It works, but at the end, it becomes extremely difficult for some people to maintain. Either way, it takes a lot of work and dedication.0

Tis the season.
