Linzess, GI issues/Diet.

I'm posting here because my GI issues kind of screw up the scale and my body image. Sometimes I'm so bloated (have not used the restroom in 4-5 days) that I am embarrassed to go out on the weekends and don't fit in my clothes. I'm also concerned there is something up with my diet but I can't pinpoint what it would be.

Anyway, I've started taking Linzess. The doctor said to take it in the morning but it's not really doing much in the morning. I've kind of been liking it before dinner instead. Does anyone use this medication? When do you take it?

Also, has anyone gone from being completely regular to having issues like this? The doctor told me to stop using casein powder and that artificial sweeteners are the devil and I'm kind of like...there's got to be something else, doc.

Oh, ffs with the artificial sweeteners. I've been using them for years. I know that there's noise about them affecting your gut flora, but... I've had your problem, and now I have the opposite problem. IBS is weird. There's more going on than artificial sweeteners.

I know this is odd, but it's just my experience, meat constipated me. I changed from being constipated all the time to the opposite problem when I went veggie.

    You can't win.

I know this isn't what you were looking for, but just wanted to say that doctor would pry artificial sweeteners and casein from my cold, dead hands.

I have ibs (irritable bowel syndrome) & ulcers, and I can relate with the bloating. There also goes days where i dont poop, which is out of norm for me because my norm is 2-3x a day...
So somwtime the scale goes up or it stays the same :/

I have not taken that medication, but i was on prozac and my doctor told me to stay away from artificial sweeteners, fruit and greasy foods. (Also coffee bit i ignored that one)

My symptoms dissapear and reappear theoughout the year but what works for me is eating mostly processed free foods and drinking a lot of water. Do i do that? Not really because i love cookies and flour.... but you know, when i eat healthy my problems dissappear.
Have you tried eliminating certain things from your diet and seeing how you feel after a month?
    (Sugar, gluten, etc)

Well you know I've been around enough to super skeptical of him. I almost didn't trust him after he said that. I am curious about the casein though.

No. I have like zero patience of willpower for an elimination diet. It'd probably be a good idea because I have some other issues as well. My sugar is already low because of the other thing.

This. I have IBS, too (either dry spells or torrential downpours, no in between ) an artificial sweeteners are no biggie for me at all. I have yet to find out what my triggers are, as they change on a weekly basis. One food that dries me up one week will do the opposite the next. Casein doesn't bother me. Sometimes dairy and fat bothers me, other times it doesn't. Weird.

My issues rear their head when i don't get sufficient fiber, but I have to be careful there, too. :/

Well I told the doc that I had no problems while regularly consuming casein powder and protein bars for 1-2 years but he said there is "build up"...is that even true? Anyone?

I also just happened to have stopped taking protein powder for a couple months too. I don't know. I am frustrated.

This doesn't make sense to me.. Casein can hit hard and fast from what I've read on others' experiences.

Honestly? I'd get a second opinion..

How's your fiber and water intake?

RUN! Next he'll be trying to sell you a cleanse for the "toxic sludge" in your colon.

Hmm that's weird he said casein instead of lactose, which a lot of ppl with gi problems have issue with. But then i tell my doctors i cant handle dairy or artifial sugars, and they always tell me to drink ensure and whole milk to gain weight. So useless sometimes. Anyway, it takes a lot of trial and error to find your triggers. A 30 day elimination diet may actually make it easier to figure them out. Otherwise, just documenting what you're eating on here could help you notice a pattern.

I have IBS-C. The things that worsen it for me are eating high fat, too much insoluble fiber, coffee and foods that have added fibers (like Fiber One bars, can't do inulin fiber). I'm also lactose intolerant which gives me similar symptoms, do you think dairy in general could be affecting you? Remember, dairy is in LOTS of things.

I don't know...I don't drink milk, I can go weeks without eating yogurt. I eat halo top ice cream though. I eat a lot of protein bars but the FIBER from them has never been an issue. But I wonder if there is something else about them. I've been eating them for years though and I was regular for the majority of the time. I did add diet soda to my diet about a year ago and now I've really kind of doubled my consumption of it. I consume a lot of caffeine.

I honestly dont know.. My protein powder contains sucralose, but that's the only AS i consume. I try and stay away from them, i either use real sugar or don't bother at all.

. I don't know what it is, but something in the back of mind screams avoid them as much as possible. Very unscientific, i know, it just is what it is for me.

I have issues almost constantly. Some of it is caused by a couple of hernias...my intestines are all out of wack. I am also yeast intolerant which causes extreme gas and leads to constipation.

This past week I have gradually started cutting back on carbs especially those that contain any yeast. It is slowly getting better but a long way from perfect. I love bread...especially yeast bread...love to make it...I am having to give it up though.

I also ordered ground pysllium husks which is supposed to help staying regular...I will see if that works.

When it get really severe and has been 4 or 5 days without going I will use a suppository as a last result. It is not pleasant but it does relieve the problem at least for a few days.

I wish you luck...I know how uncomfortable that it can be.

@Annie_01 psyllium husk is indispensable for me, i have it every day, and it keeps things running like clockwork. I make a sludge/pudding concoction everyday for lunch.
    35g protein powder
    25g psyllium husk powder
    30g cream
    200ml Almond milk

Blend it together in a big soup mug with a hand immersion blender, it's incredibly filling and delicious. This is the only way i can have psyllium, mixing it with water or juice makes me want to hurl :confounded:

I'm sure you've seen the anti diet soda/aspartame/artificial sugar threads on here and how they go off the rails... So i'm not going to argue against them here. But imo it wont hurt you one bit to drop the diet sodas for a while and see how you go. I've never even tried diet soda, so it's easy for me to say 'stop drinking it', maybe try and find a replacement that doesnt contain aspartame or whatever else they're using in them these days.

I am no doctor and have literally no experience with legit digestive issues, but... Protein bars and the like change their formulations all the time. I remember when Quest changed their bars and I went from loving them like an addict to spending the six hours after I ate each one in the bathroom in horrible pain. It might not be too hard to eliminate for the bars for a few weeks and see if it helps? Maybe they tweaked their recipe and accidentally ruined your system?

Another thought, you say you're consuming a lot more diet soda. Did it replace regular soda or other carbonated beverages? If not, could all the extra bubbles be part of the problem? I know people who avoid bubbly drinks because they screw with their stomach. Maybe if you already had issues it exacerbated them?

I really hope you figure it out!

No. I went from no soda, to occasionally drinking diet soda, to drinking one per day, to two per day.

I know I'm crazy. Some of this is more embarrassing to talk about than my damn BMs.

I'm unsure about the psyllium husk. I mean...I drank a whole bottle of magnesium citrate once and it did NOTHING so I can't imagine that helping. Like...I need meds haha.

What were the hernias like? How did they feel when you got them? What were they from?

The first hernia came about when I lifted a cabinet in to the back of a truck. It was as if someone stuck a knife in my stomach. Hernias are caused by weaknesses in muscles and allows the tissues(in my case part of the intestine) underneath to protrude. The second one I am not sure how it developed. It is smaller and rarely ever bothers me unless I become constipated.

My core is very weak so I have to be careful with the exercises that I do. There are some exercises that I won't even attempt. Weak cores muscle can affect your daily mobility.

One thing that I have learned is not to let myself stay constipated for very long. I don't like taking laxatives as they themselves can cause stomach upsets. As a last resort though I will use a suppository...it is somewhat milder of a reaction.

You said it had been a few days sent you went to the bathroom. I looked up Linzess and it seems as if that is supposed to help. Don't let it go too long. I have had some rounds where I have been very sick due to constipation. Have even ended up in the emergency room a couple of times.

I haven't noticed any certain foods that make matters worse for me other that yeast. So I am trying to eliminate it from my diet. Yeast feeds off of sugar so I am now trying to cut back on carbs.

Have you increased your fiber intake recently? When I started trying to lose weight and increased my vegetable I had so many stomach problems that I was miserable. I did the Fodmap for about a month to relieve the symptoms and then started introducing vegetables back in.

I know that you are frustrated. It can be quite uncomfortable. I wish that I could be of more help...I feel for ya.
