Soda does not have a scary amount of sodium

I keep seeing this statement here and just wondering where it comes from.

Here are a few examples of the sodium in some sodas I have in my house.

Coke zero: 30mg for 355ml
Diet mtn dew: 30mg for 355ml
Noname diet orange:30 mg for 250 ml

I'm guessing the rest are similar. What's scary about 30mg of sodium?

Some energy drinks tend to hover in the 180-250 range per 8 oz., but yeah most normal and diet soda is well below that. Hell, Diet Cheerwine has 0.

Perhaps people misspoke about sugar vs sodium. I watch sodium and soft drinks are not on my radar.

No, it's sodium they are referring to

I've heard people throw that around too. It was mostly debunked a long time ago.

It's definitely sodium they mean, and it gets said even about diet drinks.

    I've wondered about this too.

In that the amount of sodium is on the can I wonder where it is coming from and if anyone in this thread has heard such a claim I'd love to know from where (like to know what sources need to be debunked!).

Pretty sure it was debunked when nutrition labels became a thing. ;)

It's something that people have heard from the fearmongerers, and they just regurgitate it without bothering to fact check it - which is as simple as looking at the nutritional information on a can (or Googling "Diet Coke nutritional facts").

Yet it still comes up in every diet soda thread.

Thank you! Dr. Oz must've aired a "Salty Soda" segment recently...
    Legit.

I love adding a tbsp of salt to my soda - so refreshing and nutritious!

I have known people who do that with beer. Not a tablespoon but salted beer. Think it's a Midwest thing.

I'm not really supposed to drink much soda because of some of the other ingredients, but yeah, it's not the sodium. (Kidney stones)

Corona+salt and lime is definitely a thing I have seen a lot, and I am firmly east coast.

I'd do that, but with tequila added too!

Yeah, I don't know where the sodium/soda thing came from but it seems to be making a comeback.

The other one I heard was that carbonated water can lead to osteoporosis... huh?

The highest diet soda pop I've seen is diet A&W root beer, 65 mg sodium/355 mL. I watch the sodium but I don't think it's contributing to weight gain.

That's the only salted beer I've ever seen, and I am in Chicago.

We do this a lot in Southern California as well.

It's also traditional to salt the rim of a beer glass when making a michelada (beer, tomato juice, Wochestershire sauce, and hot sauce). It's really delicious, actually.

Here's some more "scary" sodium containing foods:

    1 celery stalk: 30mg sodium
    30g spinach (1 cup chopped): 24mg sodium
    67g kale (1 cup chopped): 25mg sodium

    Oh noz

I'm in Ohio and that's the only salted beer I know about. I do love the salt on margaritas. Mmm.

The carrots I eat have more sodium than my diet store brand soda.

It's because soda comes from the Greek sod- and Latin -a which put together mean "really really salty, duh."

People warn me about sodium every time I say I like seltzer water.

    Color me slain!
  • For someone who must maintain a very low sodium intake for medical reasons they may not want to nickel and dime away their daily allowance on soda. So for those folks it may be to much. But for most of us that is not a high amount of sodium. So yeah. As was stated Dr. Oz must be telling secrets again.
