Eating breakfast makes me more hungry too soon...

So I was never a big breakfast eater, basically only started because my husband would eat it...
I noticed that when I DON'T eat breakfast, I'm tied over from hunger pains until about 11am.
When I DO eat breakfast (6am), I'm STARVING by 9am. Doesn't matter if it's eggs, special k, etc. I've already downed 2 glasses of water to try and feel full! I don't really want to snack either...
What gives?
I'm tempted to go back to skipping breakfast but I don't know what that will do to my weight loss...

I believe some of us are OK skipping breakfast. For most people, it's a good idea to not skip. Just like most of the diet recommendations out there. They work for MOST people. You have to figure out your own body and what works for YOU! Even as a kid, I hated eating breakfast. I'd get in so much trouble because I'd lie (badly) to my parents about what I ate for breakfast. I am never hungry in the mornings. And frankly, I'm really trying hard to learn how to NOT eat when I'm NOT hungry. To do it at breakfast seems wrong to me.
I say do what feels right for your body.0 -
Try eating breakfast a little later in the morning?0
-
or have a mid-morning snack, like a yogurt or a piece of fruit. it's ok to have something between breakfast and lunch.0
-
Sometimes if I eat breakfast really early...like 6 am. I have a small cup of coffee when I get to work around 8 or 9. I think it may be the caffeine but it curbs my appetite.0

I agree with this, I eat something every 3-4 hours. I also eat breakfast at 6am and then between 9-10 I have a mid-morning snack. (usually a fruit and a protein, like today will be strawberries and string cheese.) the snack keeps me satisfied until lunch time. I also have a snack between lunch and dinner, and sometimes between dinner and bed.
Good luck!0 -
You're hungry because your metabolism is actually up and running as opposed to still "asleep" or whatever.
My typical morning is 20 minutes of pilates at 6, oatmeal and coffee at 7:30, half an ounce of almonds at 9:30 or 10 and lunch at noon. I was never a breakfast eater, but I've only seen good things come from it.0 -
Have a snack. Nuts, cheese, fruit.0
-
The same is true for me, so I just have a glass of soy milk in the morning since I'm always thirsty and rarely hungry. Then around 10:30 or so if I get hungry I'll have a snack (apple, handful of almonds, granola bar...). But sometimes I won't eat anything else till lunch. It's never affected my weight one bit except perhaps to help keep it off because I'm not forcing myself to eat calories when I'm not hungry.0
-
I've been struggling with this too. I always had a piece of dark chocolate and some milky coffee for breakfast, but got nagged over how bad that was for me. I eat breakfast now and am ravenous 30 minutes later.0
-
Maybe try something more filling for breakfast? I usually have two turkey sausage links, oatmeal, and an egg for breakfast and it's pretty filling. Still I have a snack 2.5-3 hours later to keep me from filling starved by the next meal.0
-
I had the same issue. It's your metabolism.
I've gone from no breakfast to having yogurt + protein shake at 7:45 and then oatmeal at 10 (lunch at noon-ish). It's actually worked out quite well and I've noticed a different in my awareness/activity level.0 -
I have the same problem but I rejoice in that hunger pan when it hits, because I know my metabolism is MOVING I 'split' my breakfast up sometimes, esp when I exercize like today. I woke up today at 5 AM. Between 5:15 and 5:45 I nibbled until I finished my Luna bar. I exercized between 6:45 and 7:30 AM, and ate second breakfast (egg substitute, skinny cow on a natures own 'thin' round bread thingy) at around 8:00.
I know this will make me hungry for lunch earlier than usual. Which is why I will break lunch into two parts too. I'll probably eat again at 10:45 ish, and then at 1:30. Dinner will be around 6, after dinner snack around 7. Bed around 11.0 -

Don't eat breakfast then! Absolutely no harm in skipping breakfast if you can operate without food.0 -
I never ate breakfast because I wasn't hungry, but decided that if I'm nagging the kids about eating before school I should do the same. Now I'm starving when I get up in the morning, and I tend to be hungry again a couple of hours later. I have heard that it's your metabolism waking up but haven't noticed a weight change due to eating. I have noticed I'm not dragging as much in the mornings.0
-
I would vote to eat breakfast. It will wake up your metabolism. Have a snack in the 150 calorie range 3 hours later or halfway between your lunch. You WANT to wake it up!0

This seems to be the case for me too. Also, if I drink a cup of coffee in the morning before breakfast I tend not to eat until later in the morning.0 -
same thing happens to me, and i think the 9am hunger that i don't usually get is because i'm speeding up my metabolism, which is GOOD! i always have something small when i first wake up, like an egg, and then have a REAL breakfast around 10 or whenever i get hungry. i've never heard anyone say it's GOOD to skip breakfast, just that skipping breakfast won't kill you. i think that a lot of my weight loss is because of having small meals throughout the day, especially an early breakfast.
i never used to like to eat breakfast, and it DOES make me hungry later in the afternoon, but it's just like vitamins. you don't LOVE taking them, it's just something you have to do.0 -

This is a natural and normal response for your body. Your supposed to eat 5 to 7 small meals a day not 3 bigs. You need to eat breakfast because it does what it says it Breaks the Fast. It tells your body its not in hibernation store mode and goes into work/burn mode. Have a sensible snack like and apple or some fibre if you haven't had any at breakfast. Then have a small reasonable lunch and another snack in the mid afternoon
Its a totally new way to think about things but once the nutritionist and I got it all worked out in my brain it all clicked for me and I started losing weight even thought i felt like I was eating all the time!0 -
If you like eating breakfast, like you are hungry when you get up then eat and just bring some fruit or nuts for a snack when you get hungry at 9.
Otherwise, if you are force feeding yourself not hungry just for the sake of eating breakfast then skip it and bring a snack to kick the binge from starving at 11am
I think its a matter of listening to your body, just do what will help you achieve your goals.0 -

There is no evidence that this help or hinders weight loss.0 -
I am MAKING myself eat breakfast. I want to wake up my metabolism, but I agree...I'm hungry earlier in the day for lunch. I eat a little snack around ten. However, I have read that if you work out BEFORE you eat, you are burning fat rather than burning the calories that you just ate. Anyone know if that is true?0
-
You're hungry earlier because when you eat breakfast you're jump starting your metabolism. Try eating 4-5 small meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism reved up all day0
-
I think its a matter of listening to your body, just do what will help you achieve your goals.
Something to consider ... if you always do what you always did, you will continue toget what you have always gotten.
If I had listened to my body when I started working out, I never would have pushed myself to the point of advancing. I listened to the sound advice of a trainer who knew what my goals were and went forward from there both with regard to exercise and nutrition.
Just like the OP, I never used to eat breakfast either. I started making myself eat breakfast and started small at first with just a banana. Now I eat breakfast every day and I actually wake up hungry. It's a good thing that when you eat breakfast, that you are hungry again later - it means your metabolism is fired up and that is a big part of any weight loss journey. When you get hungry after eating a healthy breakfast, make your snack something high protein. A protein drink, a handful of raw almonds, etc.
What you are describing is a pre-cursor to success!0 -
i HATE breakfast.. but here's what I've been TRYING to do and it's helped so much! I get up have a slimfast, protein shake, 2 boiled eggs, something, and then i work out get ready for work and then come to work.. once i get here and get settled in about 9-10am I get something else.. Like some fruit and nuts, eggs (if i didn't eat that earlier) toast with PB or nutella. and then i'm good until lunch.. which today was at 1pm.. it's helped..0

Like just about everything else on this board, this actually depends on each individual person.
I (personally) am insulin resistant. Not everyone is, but even if they aren't, the following can still happen to anyone, it just happens more noticably when you are resistant.
Smaller more frequent meals have benefitted my weight loss b/c it keeps my insulin levels from screaming up and then slamming down a short while later. Why does this matter?
Because when my inslulin levels spike up, it causes cravings for things that will keep it up.
Because when my inslulin levels then drastically drop a short while later, I get the "post sugar high" energy slump ... and that causes 2 things to happen:
1) it causes the desire to find something, anything, to help wake myself up. A high calorie coffee drink, a candy bar, etc. Dangerous ground for anyone looking to lose weight not only b/c it can sabbotage a whole days worth of eating well, but because giving in just starts this whole process over again and
2) when I feel this overwhelming loss of energy, I am MUCH more likely to find a reason to skip my workout citing "I'm just too tired", when in fact, I am not 'tired' at all. I am well rested and well hydrated. What I am is suffering from out of control insulin levels.
With several smaller meals throughout the day, I have managed to combat EVERY one of these issues and it is important to remember on here that there is no one good blanket answer for everyone.0 -
I would recommend eating breakfast or at least something within an hour of being awake. It does start your metabolism working. It really depends on what you pick to eat. If you load up on carbs and not a whole lot of protein, you will be hungry in very short order.
I had the same problem. I was not a breakfast eater. I wasn't hungry in the morning and if I did eat I would be starved very soon afterwards.
I have been eating a more healthy breakfast for the past 4 weeks now (which is how long I have been at this) and I have lost 15lbs so far. And after I eat breakfast I am usually not hungry until lunch time. I usually don't even need a morning snack.
I have switch eggs to egg whites only, lots of veggies and a little bit of meats (ham, turkey, chicken). No starches in the morning for me and I think its helping.
Also keep in mind you don't have to stick with traditional breakfast foods. Tried grilled chicken and lunch meats.
Hope this is helpful.
Good health wishes your way!0 -
Try spreading it out a little.
I usually have a little oatmeal (porridge) at home before I leave for work. Then I have a piece of fruit or a small yogurt at the office around 9 ish. This usually gets me to lunch. If not, I have a little container of almonds or peanuts on my desk. A couple of either usually takes any hunger pains away.
Good luck0 -

Um, right. That's pretty much what I said. There is no evidence that 5 - 7 meals is better. While it might work on an individual level, that's not evidence that it's something anyone else "should" do.0 -

Oh, if only that were true! As you age you have to do more. :ohwell: I can remember the days of being thin without really trying. I've eaten healthy for decades always did some type of exercise for health since I had children but as I age I find I have to think more about calories and exercise a little more to keep up with it. But through all those years, thin and not so thin, I've never been a breakfast person. And I've never had a lack of energy at work that couldn't be explained by something other than breakfast (late night, PMS, etc.).0
