I thought it was the opposite. Albacore has a higher concentration of Hg because it is smaller. I recently read that the FDA recommends limiting tuna consumption to 2 cans/wk.
No, larger and older fish have higher concentrations of mercury as are fish higher on the food chain (sharks, etc)...typically Albacore Tunas are pretty big fellas...line caught tunas are much smaller and younger in order to be line caught.1 -
for what it's worth, the tuna industry is pretty unsustainable, even the line caught stuff is part of the over-fishing problem. You might not care about dolphins and sea turtles but you should probably care about oxygen being produced by healthy oceans http://voices.nationalgeographic.com/2015/10/23/the-fight-to-change-the-tuna-industry-is-a-fight-for-people-and-planet/0

In the uk it's advised that pregnant women avoid tuna, and older children and adults eat it only once or twice a week. Other fish like shark and swordfish are higher in Mercury - canned tuna is relatively low I think but it depends on the type.0

iv always thought people hating on people for eating canned fish are a bit silly. Not like their not going to last ages on the shelf until someone eats it anyway. Seems beter to me than fresh meats that get tossed out if not eaten. I mean i get it i dislike eating meat as a general rule but id find eating tuna a far beter for our oxygen option than say eating cows and supporting that market.
Id love to not get mercury poison though so ill for sure look into canned chicken and swapping them out day by day. Even as just a precaution
And for the record i care for every animal equally, If your argueing about sea turtles and dolphins why arent you just saying i should go vegan :P ? Honest curiousity0 -

Though i hear to much tuna could be bad for you? Am i eating to much? I needed the low calorie protein. Thoughts please
Have you thought of buying chunk canned chicken instead. You can do the same dishes with it that you can tuna. Might be a good way to switch things up.
I don't eat tuna but that is because I don't eat fish of any kind. Makes me gag.
Thats a good idea ill look into it! be safe
The only time Ive ever had canned chicken, I thought it was "gross" because it tasted like tuna. I actually like tuna, but it wasn't the flavor I was going for at the time.1 -

I'm actually very happy to hear this. I've avoided canned chicken as a tuna substitute because I really like the flavor of tuna and figured I'd be disappointed w/ chicken.

I must be the odd man out. I eat only tuna and chicken breast tenderloins (even scraping off all rendered fat) when cutting, and the only reason I drop tuna when bulking is the sodium. Me+salt+carbs=water balloon. The chicken stays full time.0 -

I don't compete either. I can deal with SOME bloat, but I've had that crap set in so hard that I gained 17 lbs. in three days, and it took 12 more to go away. Screw that noise.0 -

Have you considered tuna outside of the typical can?, like Ahi Tuna, raw? There is a recipe for it, called Spicy tuna poke. I wrap it in romaine lettuce and it's delicious.0

I grew up on poke. It's definitely my favorite way to eat tuna. That still doesn't address the mercury issue, though.1 -

Really? I'm on prep #2 as we speak, I'm pretty much only eating chicken breast and tilapia. I never get sick of it, it's delicious.1 -

"vomit" is my mature thought on tuna of the canned variety. Fresh is ok but I wouldn't choose to eat it.0

There is a strong relationship between Mercury and Selenium content and the health implications when consuming mercury from fish sources.
I'd read something about this in the past but although this is not the article I read at that time it does seem to summarize the complexities:
https://chriskresser.com/5-reasons-why-concerns-about-mercury-in-fish-are-misguided/
Long story short: Mercury is not an issue when selenium is high - this is typically the case in most sea foods except pilot whale, shark, tilefish, king mackerel and swordfish and some* freshwater fish.
* varies regionally1 -
The EPA has some information about this. At a glance, I found this document posted on their page about fish consumption:
https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015-06/documents/technical-factsheet-2011.pdf
It looks like it's from 2011. Not sure if they have more updated stuff posted elsewhere!0 -

This is an extremely relevant and often overlooked point. Essentially, selenium binds to mercury, rendering it non-bioavailable.
Also, the warnings about mercury in tuna, and the recommendations for reduced intake only ever applied to pregnant and nursing women. Somehow, this got extrapolated by "experts" to include everyone, which just isn't the case. Nor has it ever been.3 -
I'm starting a cut March first it will be Tuna, shrimp, salmon for Protein source could careless about mercury with all the other crap in foods today it can't be any worse!!0

You say that, until you manage to get legitimate heavy metal poisoning from shady supplements. It's not pretty.
That said, nothing you mentioned would be cause for concern. Salmon doesn't have many mercury issues, and all three are pretty high in selenium.1 -
I probably have a packet of tuna once a week or so. It's in the rotation of salmon packets, also. I'd never get through the Costco can portions of them, and I like that the packets are perfectly single serving.0
