So cold. No run today (probably, unless I somehow rally) but I volunteered at the finish line for a local half marathon. Terrible winds off the lake and some snow flurries. I was wishing I was just running the darn thing because I was so frozen standing out there for hours. We had to unwrap all the medals and my fingers are still numb. It was fun to see all the runners finish and get to give them medals but next time I'm probably volunteering in February for that job.
@ko4q I hear you on the Must. Do. Work thing. All I want to do is take a nap under about a thousand warm blankets but I have crap to do before tomorrow's meetings. Pass over the Jelly Bellys.0 -

@RuNaRoUnDaFiEld - There will almost certainly be a thread for March. Expect @Stoshew71 to announce it tomorrow or Tuesday.
As far as not running much, many of us didn't always run this much. Last October, I ran all of 16 miles. I'm healthier now, and putting up some mileage that might intimidate new runners; but you start from wherever you are, and go to wherever you're comfortable going.
Ugh! How can February be over? I never got it started! Yikes!
@ddmom0811 Hawaii in the summer sounds good to me! That is a long flight. Wonder if we should try for a two stop destination? Maybe.... Monterey? The Big Sur? I know I'm not the only one that wants to run it. Haha! I'm dreaming! I better get after it if I wanna run at all! Although, its very possible I'll have surgery again this year... Worst case, I'll just cheer everyone on! Y'all can buy me a Moscow mule. or nachos.0 -

Too sore to meet my trail run group this morning, but I got 2.5 in on a quest to get angel food cake. I ended up with reduced fat Swiss cheese.1

@elise4270 @ddmom0811 the flight at one time isn't bad, in February we did Huntsville AL to Atlanta to Hawaii. Long day but well worth it!1

Today's notes: With freah snow on the ground, I figured it was as good a time as any to try out the new Brooks Cascadia 11's I got a few days ago. Great shoes, they handled the snow very well. Beyond that, it was a pretty vanilla run, except that I AGAIN! ran too fast. got my 4.15 miles in with a 9:13 pace, which is fast HMP for me. Oh well. Cutback week starts tomorrow with another 4 miler.0 -

Saturday was NICE! 76F and sunny. Ran around Yorktown and the battle fields. Got a bit of a sun tan. This morning was 38F and cloudy but a nice change. Almost there! Two days to get 6 miles. Probably going to rest tomorrow and do all 6 on Tuesday.1 -
@ddmom0811 - I'm right there with you! Goal shot for Feb. because of flu w/bad cough that I've been battling for 6 days. Hoping I feel well enough tomorrow to get a little run in. Pray you're feeling better soon, too!0

2/24 – rest day
2/25 – 7.18 warm up + race
2/26 – 9.32 MP intervals
February total to date – 192.45
Nominal Challenge Goal – 225 miles
Real Goals: Survive travel to and from Bend. Train well toward Boston. Avoid injury.
Today's notes – Today's assignment was 2 x 5K at MP with 2 minutes recovery. I decided to run the 5K intervals around RIT campus, so I added commute miles to get there and back. Temperature in the mid-30s (single digits C) with 15 mph W wind and partly sunny skies made for pleasant running, along with the negligible campus traffic on Sunday. I was targeting a 7:30 pace for MP, but would accept 7:25. I kept having to slow myself down, and the actual 5K intervals came in at 22:58 and 22:48 for average paces of 7:23 and 7:20. Then on the way home I kept gravitating toward MP when I should be running easy. Oh, well. It was close enough. If I never run anything faster than a 7:20 at Boston before Commonwealth Avenue, I'll likely be OK.
One of those odd things I notice but couldn't deliberately plan was that the total workout came out to 15K, i.e. I ran just about a 5K around two 5K intervals.
Rest day tomorrow. I won't hit the nominal goal of 225 miles for February, but Tuesday's workout should be long enough to put me over 200 miles for the month.

Made it through my 10k today (need to update my ticker) and added an extra mile so I only have 1 left to do in Feb to meet my goal.
Struggling with a sore hip, should be seeing the physio this week to find out the cause.
Having this challenge has really helped keep me on track and get out when I was feeling lazy. I have enjoyed reading about all your runs & successes and sad to hear some of the trials and tribulations.
Thanks guys1 -
That sounds like a great workout @MobyCarp you definitely earned your rest day tomorrow!0

This weekend I learned that apperantly five month of winter were enough to lose any mountain running fitness I ever had... We've had freakishly little snow this year, so I decided yesterday that it was time to check out if the mountain trails where already accessible. They (mostly) were, but sadly, I had to walk not only on the crazy steep parts of the trail, but also on some of the steep-but-not-crazy parts.
Add in more walking on the trails along the top of the mountain when the snow got too bad, and I ended up really pressed for time for a work appointment in the afternoon. I scrambled back down as fast as possible, focussing only on speed and not on form. My quads are feeling it today! I went for a Sunday run anyway, but it took at least half an hour of running until my legs started to feel normal again. And I'm still making funny noises whenever I have to stand up or sit down ^^
But it was still a great run! I started with sunshine and temperatures warm enough to run in short sleeves. Further up I had to put on jacket and hat, but it was still sunny - so the snow looked very pretty and sparkly

Quick update on my 1st marathon. Finish time was 3:54:06 with a face plant into the concrete included with less than 1 mile to the finish line!! Aaaggghhh! But I made it to the finish in under 4 hours so it all worked out.
I started out with the 3:45:00 pace group. After 16 miles, I couldn't keep up . I was ok though, knowing it was a stretch goal. I felt good about being on track to finisg in well under 4 hours. My were my legs getting so tired. Over 20 miles is no joke! I felt good though that my paces were still under 10, mostly around 9:30. Cardiovascular wise, I was fine. It was my legs getting so tired.
Then, I'm on the home stretch...less than a mile to go!! And I tripped over some railroad tracks. I saw then, but I guess since I was tired I didn't pick up my feet high enough. I initially thought I was seriously hurt. I knew my face was bleeding but didnt know where. After the shock wore off, I assessed my pain level. I didnt feel that hurt. Yeah...i was bleeding and my knee hurt a bit, but I got up and started walking. I felt ok and started running again. I could still make <4 so I went for it. As soon as I crossed the finish line, the medics got me. I got my finishers medal on the way but it was uneventful since I was bleeding profusely. None got on my shirt, but some did drip on my race bib! I had a team of people working on me. No concussion, no joint damage, no broken bones...just lots of blood and scrapes to clean up. My face, shoulder, hands, and knee. I think the worst soreness was from not being able to properly stretch. They gave me Tylenol, but I thought I needed morphine. Once the Tylenol kicked in, I got some fluids and food in me, and the blankets warmed me up, I felt much better and could live without morphine.
Afterwards, i got some food and actually skipped the post race beer. I figured drinking probably wasnt a good idea with all my wounds. I walked gingerly to get my gear bag and my car.
I'm super sore and have a sports massage scheduled for tomorrow. I am so glad I booked it.
Well, I have an interesting 1st marathon story to tell.17 -
@BeeerRunner great job on your first marathon! That's quite a story! I hope my first isn't that eventful...lol.....glad you're ok.2
