Grunting -- how important is it ...

Science has proven that grunting is a sound.
As science is well aware, the louder the sound the heavier the object.
So if everyone can't hear you lifting weights your doing it wrong.
Thoughts?

I don't make sounds or faces when lifting, guess my 360 pound deadlift doesn't count.14

I've always equated grunting while lifting to "kiai" in marital arts. In Japanese martial arts specifically, one of the reasons for doing kiai is to focus your energy (ki) behind your strike. It also focuses your attention/awareness on the moment of impact.7

I'll go back to the pink weights and toning.8

I don't grunt. I'll make some sound though near a max squat. Usually it's like a "shhhh" sound when I come up and let out my breath. I've definitely made some other odd sounds too.0

There is a guy like that at my gym. Always quarter rep benching and screaming at the top of his lungs. Typically I won't judge for not benching full rep range because powerlifters sometimes need to work portions of a lift, but I haven't ever seen him do anything other than bench and it's always only quarter reps at full volume.4 -
Oh! Well I would t say that I judge but on the rare occasion that I do cardio I can't help but observe the half reps and people working the weight and not the muscle.. sometimes it's amusing and other times I have to consider wait a second do I do that?2

Reminds me of screaming in labor, my midwife basically told me not to waste my energy on it. I dont openly grunt either, there might be weird breathing noises and the occasional fart though:)12

Hahaha! While I was in labour and I was kind of starting to let my voice go a little screamy, mine told me to try to keep it lower, kind of like a long steady grunt...it really worked to get through those last few contractions.2 -

The faces! I'm just discovering the different ones I make. Overhead presses make my lip move involuntarily (apparently this is common and has some scientific explanation). And now that my squats are feeling really heavy I make a kind of grimacing face sometimes. No sounds from me, though.3 -

If I looked like you, I might be a bit judgy...
pink weights and toning... lol... You better not! Peeps here are counting on you!1 -
sometimes i grunt if i'm going for some super heavy 1rm, and then i get all embarrassed that i made an involuntary sound and i hope no one heard. but i really try hard not to make a sound, because thats wasted energy and release of core pressure that is needed for my lift.3

I loudly count my reps out loud instead of grunting. Fortunately for everyone buy my husband I lift at home.3

The only thing louder than my grunts is the sound of the weight as I throw it on the floor.12

My wife once got so irritated by a guy grunting that she walked up to him and said "look clearly these weights are too heavy for you, try something lighter" and the proceeded to squat more than him in the rack next to his lol18

I noticed recently that I was making involuntary loud exhalations that were threatening to cross over into grunting. I decided to ignore it and to try not to be inhibited as that might negatively impact my performance. I hope I wasn't bothering anyone...0

I grunt a little with heavy squats. Probably nothing anyone really cares about. Mostly, I just get real red in the face.1

Some female tennis players think it is vital to have a good grunt.......4

I don't grunt; I growl like a *kitten* deathcore vocalist, when under appreciable strain. I do however keep my mouth closed, so it likely comes out more like a muffled rumble. I've had it push me right through sticks on OHP, Bench, Deadlift, and Squats.
Whether it's psychological or physiological matters not to me. The weight gets moved, and I get to sound possessed. All the more amusing, when you consider that most of my lifting is done at a backwoods YMCA.6 -
IF the grunt helps you lock in your core, then do it. But don't make noises just to impress.
Yelling, moaning, etc is just ostentation.1 -
I've started to involuntarilry grunt as my skwats and deadlifts get heavier. It can be anything, a set of 8, a set of 3.
Resisting the urge to mention soiling ones pants...2 -
I grunt and make faces at the very end of a rowing machine sprint. It's involuntary and not very loud. I hope.0

Once in awhile, the weight isn't going back up without some sound coming out of my mouth. My third set of deads last night, there was a grunt to get that 10th rep up. But not every rep and not most days.0

Also in tennis.
I used to do European style fully armored combat, and some did this, some didn't. I know it would happen spontaneously for a particular shot or block requiring focus.0 -
I grunt, no shame, it's not something I can help. When you're struggling to push up those final couple of reps in your squat set, some sound is going to come out of your mouth. Do I scream like a wildebeest like the guy in that video you're quoting/ganking? Of course not. Do I totally make weird faces and "MMPH" noises when pushing increased weight? Heck yes.
I pride myself in being in good company with folks like Gabreil Mamani and her famous "Beeker face:" https://www.instagram.com/pumping.fe/?hl=en1 -
If you're grunting you're doing it wrong...you should be yelling a battle cry so the weights know who they're up against.10

I'd rather involuntarily grunt than fart3
