My back story. Need to lose 20 lbs(or so) of baby padding - had 4th baby 22 weeks ago. Have already lost 21lbs by doing general everyday activity such as reaching 10000 steps and over every day. 7 weeks ago I started doing HIIT sessions at home using various you tube videos, I do at least 30 minutes of excersise plus the steps and l am careful of what I eat but in that 7 weeks I haven't lost a single pound!!
WHAT??!!
I just can't understand it! Why is it that as soon as I start excersising I don't lose any weight?? I have lost inches though as my clothes are bigger. Can you lose inches and not weight??

    Yes
1 lb fat weighs the same as 1lb muscle

So you can lose fat but gain muscle so it doesn't show on the scales as a loss = SCALES ARE NOT A LINER = weightloss isn't just scales loss

You can be a size 14 and 180 lbs or a size 20 and 180 lbs as muscle weighs the same as fat but most scales don't show fat loss

Your not very over weight so I'd concentrate on the tape measure the scales are evil

If you weighing and measuring absolutely everything and logging it all honestly then your body is losing fat make sure your eating the right amount calories though and don't over estimate exercise calories you need to find out how many you burn eat half of them set mfp at sedentary

    :)

That was helpful, thanks. Needed to hear that it's not all in vain! I'll view it as not losing weight but gaining muscle!! MFP is on lightly active, I thought as I exceed 10000 steps it should be on that setting.
Inches loss trumps scale weight! Keep going, weight loss does not happen overnight.

I guess you are very right. I thought by adding cardio the lbs would drop even quicker.
I will put the scales away for the time being and carry on.

It comes down to diet. Losing inches means you're gaining muscle. That's great. Keeping exact in your eating will make the scale start moving down again. You're doing great!
  • The thread was named due to my feelings of exasperation by the way. Apart from the title I never once mentioned giving up and I have no intention of doing so, I just needed some advice and support which most of you gave and I'm really grateful for.
I'm glad I found this forum.

Focus on your food intake and put less emphasis on exercise.
  • Yes..losing inches is a great feeling. I just thought that the scales would also have reflected the hard work. I should also add that I have reduced calorie intake by 250 a day and take the dog daily for a 40 minute walk (which I also did while pregnant) but now I push a pram. I live in an area where there are LOTS of hills so I get a good work out by doing that alone nevermind the added cardio and weight training. But I am encouraged by all your comments that the numbers on the scales is not the be all and end all.

Congratulations you have found your maintenance. Drop 250 more calories to get in to a deficit.

Or equally likely is that she's experiencing water weight retention in her muscles as a result of the increased exercise (very common), which is temporarily masking the weight loss.

Does this mean that I could step on the scales one day and it will show a dramatic weight loss all of a sudden? No, wait, I said that I was ignoring the scales for now! But it's something to hold onto.

If you're nursing then your body will hold on to some fat until the baby is weaned.

Inches lost means lost weight, so good job! The scale reflects water, fat, muscle, and can easily be manipulated and not reflect an expected decrease. Inches don't lie!
But but you lost 21lbs so far, in 22 weeks! That's average a pound a week which is great and a healthy rate of loss. New exercise is not enough data to get a new consistent metric to base success or failure on. You could be burning less calories than you think, or not realize you are overeating. Keep going. Probably water retention from the exercise. Also if your calories were calculated on MFP, have you put in your new weight to reflect the 21lbs down? Because your base calorie needs drop as you get smaller. So if you feel like you did it right and your calories that you are eating are correct and as accurate as possible, and you are not over exaggerating burned calories and eating too many for what you worked off, then consider giving it another week or two at the same level. No change after that? Then drop your calories a little further.
Congrats on your baby, and good luck!

22 weeks postpartum isn't very long in terms of hormones balancing and getting back to normal Hormones are a fickle thing and causes a lot of fluctuations (or stalls) in weight. Wait another 8 weeks atleast.
  • You all make so much sense. Thank you.

Until 7weeks ago, when I first started exercising and reduced my calories by 250, I hadn't changed anything diet wise since having my little one and it was working as I was losing weight. I just thought by upping my exercise regime it would drop even further or at least carry on dropping but never had I thought it would remain stagnant!!
    At least I'm not gaining!!
Inches are coming off, clothes are bigger so I will give it a few more weeks and review my situation again.

Inches are what everyone else sees, what the mirror sees and what dictates your clothes size, the scales are just what YOU see and are a less important measurement since they don't take into account water and muscle gains vs fat loss. You have also made brilliant progress of a pound a week. You will have lost fat if you're losing inches so honestly you're doing everything right and there is no need to worry. Great work. x

you don't even mention if you are in a calorie deficit or weighing your food?? also, to all those saying she has put on muscle - no - you don't put on muscle at a rate that would mask all weight loss. especially when she didn't even mention being on a progressive lifting program! possibly water retention and/or food issues.

but since you are giving up none of that really matters anyway!

I don't think yoy really want to give up, just frustrated. Congratulations on the weight loss you have already done in being only 22 weeks postpartum. If you quit you will just gain it back. Having a new baby is tough. I gained weight after having both my kids instead of losing. Managed to get back down to a good weight about 4 years after my first. (My kids are 9 years apart.) Swore I wouldn't let it happen again after my second but was just too overwhelmed and did anyway. Now back at it again and my second will be 5 next month. I feel so far from where I was. I really admire what you have done already. I would also recommend googling Bikini Body Mommy. Brianna is so positive snd inspiring IMO.

Congratulations you have found your maintenance. Drop 250 more calories to get in to a deficit.

This. If you were not adjusting your calorie goal every 5-10 lbs lost, then you were simply slowly reaching your maintenance calories.

What you're saying makes sense. I'm not a nutritionist or personal trainer (otherwise I wouldn't be on here having a tantrum that I haven't lost weight in 7 weeks - haha!) but in my logic I did think that I would lose something in 7 weeks since I had reduced calorie intake by 250 and took up cardio and weight training. I mentioned this above in the thread somewhere.

I also mention in the thread somewhere that I had no intention of giving up really. The title was named as such out of exasperation and frustration that I was making a huge effort but reaping no reward while before I started eating less and exercising 7 weeks ago I'd steadily been losing weight. I'm regretting my choice in title, it was poorly thought out as it attracts negative comments such as yours and one or two others. Your opinion is welcomed though, I just wanted to explain.

I don't always monitor my weekly calorie deficit, but I ran the numbers this morning.

Here's the math. Last week, Monday through Sunday, I had 4818 remaining calories. /3500 = 1.376571. My scale tells me that I lost 1.4 lb from last Monday. The correlation is eerie.

Try doing that for yourself. If you are as accurate as you can possibly be in logging food and exercise, you should be able to get math like that.

I've lost ~28 lbs in two months without a lick of exercise.

Keep up your activity but focus on being accurate in recording your diet, and stay in deficit.

This makes me believe that I should have stuck to what I was doing before!! ;) Great achievement by the way!
  • Obviously if she was really *giving up* she wouldn't of made a thread announcing her back story and ending with a question regarding inches vs. The scale.

Some of poster's need to chill out, being so quick to jump on some one you do not even know.
  • If you want to see the scale go down take a break from working out (a few days to a week) You have probably gained some muscle due to your workouts however it is really hard to gain a significant amount of muscle. When you are working out your muscles swell with water. I only see the scale go down when I take a break from my workouts however I also measure for inches lost too.

Thank you on both counts. Coincidentially I haven't done any exercise over the past 3 days only my regular steps, which have amounted to 38661 steps, which didn't include my regular dog walk as I have been too busy with family life. I had a 3 mile walk this morning and I'm chomping at the bit to do a HIIT session (never EVER did I think in a gazillion years that those words would come out of my mouth!!) So, baby allowing I might get a quick one done before the day is done.
