Keto attempte no 2 and need tips

Bad experience my first time but I'm sure it was because I wasn't eating enough fat, I generally don't eat a lot of fat and I was very very ill.. I'm am going to get a good start on it tomorrow and need some tips on overcoming the keto flue... also is it a bad idea while TTC

If you're trying to conceive, it's best to best a diet that you can continue while pregnant. This is because you will be pregnant for at least two weeks before a pregnancy test is positive, and because it is a good idea to get into healthy habits now, that you can continue throughout a pregnancy.
There have not been any human studies on ketogenic diets during pregnancy. Of note, women with hypereremesis with ketones in their urine are admitted to hospital, as it is considered a dangerous sign.
This study of mice showed provlems with organ development in the foetus, if they followed a ketogenic diet while pregnant:

This large scale study of nurses details the diet considered best for fertility. It includes plenty of wholegrains:

Is there a specific reason you want to do keto? If you had difficulty the first time, it might not be the best approach for you.6

That's how I started keto. The high fat (and I was used to moderate fat) made my IBS much worse and causes me great intestinal pain. I was on it for a few months, too, because I believed the hype. My sodium was on point and my electrolyte balance was fine. I didn't get keto flu. All you need for weight loss is a calorie deficit. If the last run of LC/keto made you ill.... it may not be right for you, and that's okay.
You should never eat in a way that makes you unhappy, ill or uncomfortable.4 -

I wouldn't do keto while TTC and/or pregnant. I'd be concerned about your folic acid given the lack of cereals, grains, legumes, etc. An RD would be good resource for you, though, if you want more guidance. I had to use one with my second pregnancy due to gestational diabetes. Your midwife or OB should be able to provide a referral.

Why are you forcing yourself to do keto? I get that there is a huge following, but if you don't respond well to it, it's really not worth forcing on yourself. I did keto for years when I was younger and have grown to have some negative opinions of the diet, and I honestly believe a more standard 40/40/20 or 40/30/30 diet is healthier, more effective, and more sustainable.
Otherwise if you want tips to sticking to it.... keep your fats very high and make sure you're still eating low carb veggies like string beans and broccoli. If you don't eat veggies while doing keto you will feel like death, honest.2 -
You could try a general low-carb approach instead. Just try eating under 100g of carbs a day and see how you feel. Avoid sugar and simple carbs - go for more nutrient-rich carbs like potatoes, sweet potatoes, whole grains, beans, legumes.
I've done keto on and off for a few years and I do like it, but I wouldn't want to go that extreme TTC or while pregnant. A general low-carb approach is probably the safer route.2 -

Low carb of some type works best for me with my particular medical issues but I wouldn't do keto while TTC or pregnant. "Low carb" is anything under 150 gms/day so if you want some of the benefits some people experience while keto/low carb (e.g. for some of us it really helps blunt appetite and cravings which makes adherence much easier), you could try aiming for around 150 gm/day of carbs and more moderate fat and protein.0 -

If I eat 150 carbs - I consider I'm not anywhere near keto - at that point I start getting carb cravings and my "calories in" get to the danger point.

Its been awhile (17yrs) since I was pregnant and I was not low carb at the time but I will say to the OP that you can "decide" on your pregnancy diet all you want. Just don't be surprised if said pregnancy throws the plan out the window. When I was pregnant I couldn't eat meat for the first 3-4 months - couldn't touch it or smell it or even look at certain types. This caused a lot of bewilderment (and laughter) at a KFC once, when we were traveling. I also drank gallons and gallons of milk, despite being fairly lactose intolerant before and after pregnancy, without a single stomach cramp. I just looked at as nature's way of preparing you for the real changes coming, lol. All this to say, pick a diet/lifestyle that works for you now, see if it works while pregnant but don't try to force it if it doesn't, and once baby gets here, re-evaluate.0

Keto flu is mainly down to your electrolyte levels, ensure you are drinking enough water and having enough salt, potassium and magnesium your body needs. Keto flu in my case has never been an issue for me, I live off a cyclical ketogenic lifestyle meaning I am in keto 5 days of the week and eat carbs 1-2 days a week and it helps me a lot. I never get or had the keto flu. I take electrolyte tablets which you just dissolve in water and there are many flavours. This also helps me when I weight train while fasting. My energy levels are rocket high!0
