Evening walk and terrible people

I went for my evening walk as I usually do. As I am walking, someone leans out there window and yells, "Look at you fat girl". I just don't understand the desire that people have to do things like that. It was immensely discouraging and I just kind of wanted to go back home at that point, but I kept walking. I just felt so selfconcious and I don't really want to go for a walk anymore.

please please ignore them.
You are out there, walking. They are inside, probably sat on the couch, so insecure that all they can do is yell at strangers. You are way way better than them.23 -

Some people are absolutely horrible, but you have to remember that what they did says more about them than it does about you. You are out there working to improve yourself and they are not.
I don't blame you for being self-conscious, I think anyone would be after an encounter like that. But you can change your weight through what you are doing. That person has to live with feeling like crap their whole life because people who say things like that are so deeply ugly that you know it eats them from the inside out.
Go get your walk on! Don't let them rob you of that.31 -
I'm so sorry that happened to you. People are truly awful sometimes, but that is a reflection of them, not you. I'm 5'8 and weighed 158 at my highest and had a car full of teenage girls throw a McFlurry at me and shout "fat *kitten*!!!" while I was riding my bike a while back. My purpose in sharing that is to say that some people are just jerks and will say anything they think will hurt you, even when it isn't true, so I wouldn't take it to heart.
Also, good for you for continuing on your walk. It's hard, I know, but try not to let ignorant people discourage you. You're trying, and that is something to be proud of.12 -
sometimes humans are the worst. shake it off as best as you can and try to turn some of the shame into anger cause anger makes you walk quicker.4
-
I am so sorry that they did that. I am SOO proud of you for continuing your walk!
People are ridiculous and I will never understand why someone would yell anything rude at a stranger.
I hope knowing we are all supporting you, have your back and think you are doing awesome helps make your day a little better.14 -
I've been called a number of weight related things over the years even when I was at my slimmest and fittest - my philosophy is that I can lose weight and I am working towards that, there is nothing they can do about being a *kitten*!9
-
I'm so sorry that happened to you People can really suck, and I know how discouraging it is to hear something like that. Please don't stop going for walks...thats something you need to do for YOU, and no one else can do it for you. The reward of working past this awful moment are great though, and you'll be past a stage where people can say these things to you before you know it.
*HUG*3 -
This sort of thing has happened to me many times.
The good news is that you can just walk away from their ugliness, but they have to live with themselves!
Really, just how LOW does a person have to feel about themselves to lash out at an innocent stranger in that way.
But, seriously, I know how incredibly horrible it feels.
Don't let the bully win! You were out walking. You weren't sitting on your couch. You were doing what you need to do to improve your life. You are a champion! Never give up! Keep walking past that house and hold you head up high when you do!

Just ignore them, don't let you demotivate, by this kind of loosers!1

ignore them......unfortunately these idiots exist and there's nothing we can do about them (that's legal!)

So true!
OP - you are working on a healthier you. Window guy is an a**hole6 -
You may be fat, but they are the ones who are ugly. You can lose weight. They will always be ugly...because it's in them, not on them. I'm so sorry you went through that. You should be PROUD that you finished your walk. You go right back out there tomorrow and the next day and the next day. Don't let the ugly people ruin it for you.11

Ignoring taunts doesn't work for me. (It's happened. At certain gyms, while riding a bike, sneers while walking) I'm too sensitive. I avoid taunts and go where they're almost guaranteed not to happen. Planet Fitness is $10 a month and they have treadmills for walking. No one will taunt you. Exercise DVDs done at home in front of the TV don't come with taunting either.
I understand being advised to ignore it and nobody wants to let the bad guys win. But when there's places you can go to exercise and not get psychologically stabbed in the face, it's a better alternative in my opinion.
On this note - also check indoor "walking" videos. I live in the mid-west and won't walk outdoors in ice or snow. Plus it's just another option for variety sake.

There are DVDs too. Check you local library. Just Walk DVDs have a music only option and chaptering let's you skip around.

Something similar happened to me a couple years ago on a college campus and I will admit I felt crappy for days. It took me a while to dust myself off and get back out there but it really does feel better I promise! I did just on every crack I saw for a week and pretended it was breaking their backs7

Good for you for continuing your walk. Please don't ever let what others say or think deter you from doing what is best for you. Some people can only build themselves up by tearing others down. They are not worth even thinking about (easier said than done I know) but in the end it will all be worth it and you will will have the last laugh. Good wishes to you on your journey.3

Wow! 'Terrible people' really sums it up. I'd have a few other descriptors but they'd just get *kitten*ed out anyway. Next time, just wave really big and give them a huge smile and a thumbs up. Their goal is to dehumanize you; don't give them that kind of power. They don't deserve it. You're working on improving yourself. They're getting jollies from dragging others down. I know who I'd rather associate with.5
-
Look, some people can be real *kittens*. You were strong enough and brave enough not to give into the trolls. You are out there improving yourself and that is something to be proud of. Just know that for every jerk out there, there are dozens of people here who support you. My philosophy is to prove them wrong. I would keep walking just to make a point. You are going to succeed, lose weight, and feel better while they have to watch you and all they can do is remain stagnant.2

Haters gonna hate while drinking haterade. This is what created the boom in home workouts. Ever consider something like this to get your calorie burn on? Cause stupid people clump in groups. Just don't let them affect your goals.6

I'm sorry that happened to you. I live in the country and walk a lot and wouldn't have believed that people like that exist before I started reading these forums, but obviously they actually are out there.
Whatever you do, don't let them derail you. What about taking along an MP3 player and listening to music? People can say whatever they want then, and you won't hear any of it.3 -
Thank you guys so much! This all really helped. I am going to get back out this evening and do my walk!37
-
I'm sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately we live in a world where people can be ugly and horrible to each other without much consequence. I listen to my ipod on walks, and then when people honk or yell out their windows, I like to think they are cheering me on, regardless of what they are actually saying! Many of us have dealt with bullying throughout our lives, and people will be bullies regardless of how much you change. I like to just take in what people say, note it in my head, and then move on and move forward. I don't have time to worry about what other people think of me. Find support in your friends on here, and go out there and do what you love to do.4
-
Ugh, terrible people is right. Good for you to keep going with your walk. You are stronger than a some random stranger who feels the need to say that kind of thing. Way to go with the walking!!!3

To the OP - Please see my username. That is what someone yelled out at me when I started to improve my health a couple years ago. I embraced the name and used it to motivate me. You keep walking and keep that smile on your face!17 -
Good for you! Get back out there and ignore those rude idiots.
I'm a speed walker so I pump my arms when I walk. Sometimes I'll walk our riverwalk area which means I walk by several restaurants with outdoor eating areas full of people. I've had grown *kitten* adults mock me and swing their arms wildly when I walk by. Pathetic. I don't take it personal. I'm just hoping none of those fools have children they're passing their bad manners to.6 -
You have loads of determination, a beautiful spirit, a dazzling smile, and a great attitude. Those fools only wish they could be you. Keep on walking, fellow Hoosier!4
-
Remember that you are beautifully and wonderfully made. I know it hurts, but try and ignore them. Their comments are a reflection of the pain they feel inside and not at all a reflection of you.
Psalm 139:14
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.7 -
I'm very heavy chest and have had random men yell out the window very, very obscene and disrespectful comments to the point that I started wearing long coats in the middle of summer in florida. Then I realized, as @usmcmp stated, the things and behavior they have says more about them. You're doing what you need to, to become healthier. Don't let them still your thunder and ruin your groove. I wear what's comfortable, put my headphones on and they can say whatever the want, doesnt ruin my day anymore! Keep ya head up10
-
I'm so sorry. Hope it doesn't discourage you.1
-
I am so sorry this happened to you! *fierce hug* Some people are just jerks.4
-
Screw them! They were not raised right and need to put down others to feel they can go on with life. You are doing this for you and i give you a hug and a high five! Keep on with it. Hopefully you don't encounter any other jerks!
