Same as what @astroamy says. I've lost 70 with 10 to go (goal weight 135, I'm 5-7), but the deficit is steep and the margin of error is razor thin. It's a battle. I can eat 1800 and lose, but literally, one glass of wine or scoop of peanut butter sets me back. I'm beginning to think its just not worth it.
I'm fortunate that I started my loss in January, and now that it's April-ish I'm back on my bike. So my activity is naturally kicking up a few hours of cardio/week as I get to the home stretch on weight loss. Without a big lifestyle/activity change, it was getting tough to stick to an ever shrinking calorie target.3 -

Same here. I want to hover around 120, but I am not completely sure of how my weight goal corisponds to my fitness goal0 -
I know this is an old thread. But it's a really good one. Especially now that many of us have been at this since at least January and might be approaching our goal weight. Personally I've been at it for 16 months and the last 10 have been elusive. I tried to run a small deficit (.5 per week) for 5 months -- to no avail. The smallest slips were pushing me into maintenance. So, I've decided to put #1 in this article into play........1300 calories for 6 weeks. You can do anything for 6 weeks, right? Even if that doesn't get me to the finish line, I'm hopeful it will be a kick start. What is everyone else doing as we push towards bikini season?

Ok I absolutely don't see the point of making myself miserable for 6 weeks just to lose some vanity pounds.
And yeah, I burn 2400 calories a day on a lazy day, I can't even imagine eating 1300 calories... ever.2 -

I feel the same way. I work really hard all week, but one bad meal, small blizzard, or one over-eat out at dinner at the end of the week and I'm right back to square one. Its definitely a thin line when its down to the last 10 lbs. I'll have to work harder and skip the high calorie meals that put me too far over that day.2 -
I hear your pain. Same here. Was only 2 pounds from goal and then a screeching halt. So hard to go back to 1200. But, if it helps kick start a pound or two, I will just have to do it. Just not quite ready to give up the good stuff6

Because hungry. All the time. I was never this hungry when I was carrying an extra 30 pounds.8

I expect my last 10 pounds to take almost a year! But, the time is going to go by anyways so I'm working on patience. I consider this time also as practice for maintenance aka the rest of my life.9

I have about 20 more lbs to lose to reach my goal (10 more to a healthy weight) and it's hard. To lose a pound a week, I have to consume 1350 calories. This doesn't include what I eat back after exercising. It's really tough sticking to that amount.3

For me, 1,300 calories per day + exercise would be 1 lb. per week (based on RMR+20%). I have to exercise to lose. The good news is that spring is here and summer is around the corner - exercising outside can be fun.3 -
for me it took about 7-8 months to lose 40 lbs. after that mfp gave me 1290 cal/day. I was too hungry to eat that little so I upped rate of loss to 1/2 lb/wk so I can eat 1500. I usually stay under 1500/day but haven't lost a thing for the past almost 2 months. If I lose 10 more lbs, I'll weigh what I did 15yrs ago but I'd like to lose 20 more lbs, so I increased my exercise. I feel fine eating just under 1500 cal/day so I have hope that I can maintain with that amount2

That's true! I'm a little more active in the summer, but since I'm with a young one, the exercise isn't super intense. Hopefully we can get a lot of time in at the pool this summer. It seems far away- it's snowing (!) here today.
I've lost 82 lbs total, but for some reason, I seem to be hungrier now than I was before.

Its like... my body is "comfortable" at 135 lbs and whenever I go below that I get these weird cravings to eat until I gain the pound or so back. I wanted to get to 125, but like posters have said above, the SLIGHTEST deviation from my set calories puts pounds on instantly as soon as I dip below 135.
I was 135 as a teenager and maintained that until I started gaining weight in my twenties, so it seems like the default weight. I wanted to lose more to lose my small belly though.4 -
I lost a lot and quickly added those last 5 back this past fall when I went back to work. I added 3-4 more to that. Granted, I'd changed my goal several times and went lower on purpose to provide a cushion, but I couldn't keep it there. I've been seriously losing to go below my goal and add back slowly. I am being successful by looking at a minimum goal of steps daily as well as drinking much more water than I was. I've also tried to not go over weekends as I'm getting these last few pounds off. Amazingly.. it's really working. I'm thinking that the water is helping. I drink 16 ounces in the am, after the treadmill, 16 on the way home, and 16 after dinner.3

Yeah I've been there too..its a battle for me to stay at my lower number, my body always wants to try to go back to 130 unless I be vigilent ALL the freaking time. Even my hubby says to me there's more to life than forever watching what you eat... its never ending unfortunately. If we take our eye off the ball too long the sad reality is gaining weight, I don't want to gain so I have to be fairly strict with myself
but yeah, I feel like just saying, oh heck, is its worth all this effort to be slim...4 -
Definitely not a competition, but as I am much shorter than most of you, my daily calorie allowance is 1200 calories (1800 would be a dream!). As I have lost weight, I have taken some actions to increase the resistance in my workouts (for example, I wear an 8# vest on the elliptical) because (1) I am stronger and (2) I weigh less, so with resistance exercises, I am literally moving a lighter load. For those of you who are losing inches and not pounds, just remember people see your physical body, not the number on the scale!7

Ive been on my last 2-3 lbs for the last 3 months lol. BUT I know what i need to buckle down on if i REALLY wanna lose them, I just don't feel like giving up the extra weekend food/drink fun! I think come june, I will try to be more focused. It's tough to get back to the mindset of "weight loss mode" after maintaining for a while!6

This is a great thread. Bouncing back and forth with 2 pounds trying to lose last five. Is it mental? Fear of success? Maybe I am just content with the extra maintenance calories and the look in clothes. Never been skinny, so maybe I need to focus on toning and forget the extra few pounds.2

I've got to throw in the age factor and being female. I'm sure some will disagree, but for me that last 10 pounds has been very elusive in my 50's compared to how things went when I was younger. I've been a yo-yo all my adult life gaining and losing the same 25-30 pounds every few years. In my 30's and even 40's, a moderate deficit and increased activity and the pounds were gone in a couple months. Then I'd be in a holding pattern at the lower weight for quite awhile. At 57 I'm now into my second year on MFP, logging, tracking, exercising. It took a year to lose 25 and I've been working on that last 10 since October. Minor deviations from the calorie goal, or an extra glass of vino and I will see a 2 lb gain in a week. Frustrating as he11, but it is what it is.
I also think I set my original goal too high. My highest weight was 180 on a 5'5" medium frame. I figured 25 pounds would get me to 155, which was good but still a little above the normal BMI. When I got to 155, I was pleased, but I could see from looking in the mirror that I still had some work to do. That final 10 should get me where I want to be, so I'm still plugging along. AND, enjoying the journey, I might add!6 -
As has been said previously it is important to differentiate being close to "goal" weight and being close to being extremely lean.
If goal weight puts you in the average range then losing the last few pounds is likely mental. However if the last few pounds is chasing the extreme level of leanness then it is hard because your body doesn't want to be there.
When I was 25% bodyfat I dropped the first 15lbs of fat within a matter of weeks. Now I'm somewhere between 10-12% and 10lbs will put me at extreme levels of lean. I'm finding it hard to lose 1-1.25lbs of fat a week even using a sledgehammer protocol.4 -

I have 8 lbs to lose and it's hard. I mean I am not stuck to that number, might be more, might be less, will decide when I see it in the mirror. And I'm always within those ten pounds( gain during bulk, lose during cut). Cutting seems to be getting harder with age too. A couple of drinks on the weekend almost ruins the hard work of the whole weekend.2

After years of getting stuck at 140lbs (I'm 5'6'') I finally got down to a very lean 133 two years ago. My "ultimate goal" had been 128, but as I was already a size 4 and looked great I re-evaluated. What changed was not my diet but the amount of exercise I did. I was cycling 25KMs a day and lifting heavy 3x a week. I was able to eat 1750 calories a day and get down to that size.
Without a ton of exercise I need to eat about 1300-1400 calories to lose weight, and to be honest it's just too hard for me to do. I'm currently trying to lose baby weight and not nearly as active and having a really hard time.7
