Q AND A 'Is it Ok to lose up to 40 lbs in one month?'

I'm glad you came here to get info before jumping in and trying to lose 40 pounds in a month, which just is not healthy (and for most people, not possible).
Yes, summer is just around the corner. My advice is: lose weight in a healthy, gradual way, but also don't wait around for your body to be "perfect" before enjoying the sun. The Bathing Suit Police aren't going to swoop in and arrest you if you wear a bikini while at an 'overweight' BMI, lol. Work towards being a healthier you, but in the meantime get out there and have some fun as the "you" that you are right now.
And of course my final piece of advice, don't forget to wear sunscreen.7 -
A friend of mine did lose over 40 lbs in one day recently. She gave birth to triplets. The combo of babies and all the extra birth stuff resulting in a 42lb loss in one day.
So assuming not looking to give birth to triplets or something else equally drastic nope not healthy.15 -
I mean you can if your 600+ pounds. At less than 150, in one month, you're most likely going to lose between 6-10 lbs max healthily.0

How much calories should i eat?
My Fitness Pal's minimum recommendation for women is 1200 NET - that means if you add exercise.....you earn more calories. This 1200 will help you meet nutritional guidelines.
How much do you weigh, how tall are you, how old are you? Weight loss isn't one-size-fits-all. Very obese people may be able to lose weight that quickly, because it takes a large(r) number of calories to maintain their size.
But when you are closer to goal, your daily maintenance is smaller. You can't take a large deficit against a small number....it just doesn't work (while trying to be safe & healthy).0 -

But if you don't dare wear the bikini this summer, remember that you can buy a one-piece swimsuit with a tummy control panel!

From my first post i got people saying that it is "UNHEALTHY" to lose weight up to 40 lbs some say its "Ridiculous" (Might go easy on me because this os my first time) and i wanted to ask to the people who already lose weight,im not starving myself, i have been drinking green tea or sometimes apple cider then i go to gym or if im already done with those things i have a routine of workouts that i do at home before even i started gym and i limit my food and calories, is it natural or unatural or maybe my metabolisim is... Weird? Help me out please.
Its not mathematically possible really. To lose 40 pounds of fat in a month you need a deficit of ~4700 per day. Meaning you'd need to be able to burn 6000-7000, eat 1300-2300. And with a burn that high you might not be able to survive on 1300-2300 without feeling total spent. THen there is the issue that such a large deficit (if it were even possible) would be more than most human bodies could process in terms of fat loss so you'd also lose lean body mass, and likely do damage to your organs.3 -
Im just 149 and now im 146 i just got my hopes high so i asked you guys, your comments are really helpfu and i will take it easy.
So you want to weight 109? Even if you COULD lose 40 lbs in a month, at your height you'd be way at the bottom of healthy, right at the border of underweight. I need to lose weight (I'm substantially taller than you) but my aim is mid-range. There must be some value to the 40 lb number that I'm missing unless you're competing with someone else your own height. Even at the same height, body type would mean that what might good for her would not be best for you.1 -

She's in Asia so her summer is just ending I like this advice, though!
You should eat around your workouts based on when you are hungriest, and however helps you feel satisfied during the day. For some people this means eating smaller meals and snacks throughout the day, and other people like to save their calories for one big meal. It's just a matter of personal preference and to help keep you on track. This timing of when you eat in relation to your workout won't make much of a difference to your losing weight, as long as you stay within your calorie goal.1 -

Not true. She's young... say she burns 2000calories a day normally. If she works out for 4 hrs a day she could easily burn another 2000 calories (I burned about 1500 per day average when I was a teen when I'd go to the gym) and if she ate 500 calories she'd be losing way too fast.0 -
Thanks for the opinions and answers! I got one more question, when do i have to eat a lot? After workout or before?
You can eat anytime...but you need 1200 net calories unless a doctor says you can eat less. NET means the amount you ate and did not burn off with exercise (you eat some of the exercise calories back)0 -

Umm... Yeah true. She's 5'3" 149lbs and wants to get to 109lbs in a month. Working out 4 hours a day is not going to make that happen. And even if she could find the time to exercise intensely enough to lose 10lbs a week. (She still can't.) But, hypothetically, if she could, it would be exceedingly dangerous.6 -
OP, if you're still around, don't bother with the apple cider vinegar. It's really bad for your teeth.4

I have to disagree with the naysayers... I am not a nutritionis or anything but here's my story how I lost 35 lbs in 23 days eating 1800 calories a day. I started at 275 and within about 3 weeks I lost 35lbs. I'm a 6'1" male 31 years old.
Breakfast: 2/3 cup steel cut oats with cinnamon and stevia OR 4 eggs.
Snack: 2 pieces of fruit.
Lunch: 5 cups spring mix/spinach with 8 ounces grilled cicken seasoned with Mrs. Dash.
Snack 18 almonds or protein bar.
Dinner: 8 ounces turkey meatballs (homemade) seasoned with Mrs. Dash. 20 spears asparagus. Salad with whatever veggies I want.
Snack: 3 cups skinny pop seasoned with mrs. Dash. Or sunshine frozen bar
I cut out all dairy, gluten, and really watched my sodium. Drank 120 ounces of water a day (or more)
I did not do any extra exercising at all.
Is anything here unhealthy?
I felt great, had more energy than ever, felt happier and was sleeping better. I also didn't have any cravings for bread, sugar, or fatty foods like I used to...1 -

You started at 275, and you're male. The OP is 146lbs and female. Many people in this thread have stated that people with a lot to lose can lose that fast, but the "naysayers", as you put it, are completely correct that the OP, who is barely into the "overweight" BMI, if she even is at all, could not lose anything close to 40lbs in a month while being even vaguely healthy.
Your experience is utterly incomparable.24 -

If you think that because a 6'1" male was able to go from 275 to 240 in three weeks that a 5'3" female is completely capable of going from 149 to 109 in four weeks and saying they can in a healthy manner, you have absolutely no idea at all how healthy weight loss and calorie deficits work. I'm sorry, but she can't do that.17 -
Oh my bad. I'm a moron... I did not read carefully enough... sorry, please disregard my post... I posted a new thread about my diet as I am curious... Please pretend in was never here...9

tiffaninghs wrote: »it is NOT UNHEALTHy!! its probably acidic waste and water weight anyways!!!
No, no, no, no. OP is barely overweight and with little to lose should NOT be aiming for 40lbs a month - that WOULD be unhealthy at her size.
Acidic waste? What kind of junk woo is that?4 -
tiffaninghs wrote: »it is NOT UNHEALTHy!! its probably acidic waste and water weight anyways!!!
If you think it's not unhealthy for a 5'3" female to try and go from 149 lbs to 109 lbs in one month you need to have a serious sit down with a doctor because you have been dangerously misinformed about weight loss.6 -

What's acidic waste?1 -

What's acidic waste?
I Googled it. I think my IQ dropped a few points and I didn't even read very much...8 -

My mind is boggled at the idea that you seem to think that over one quarter of this persons body mass is taken up by water weight and "acidic waste". You need to study some physiology.5 -
tiffaninghs wrote: »it is NOT UNHEALTHy!! its probably acidic waste and water weight anyways!!!
If she's holding onto 30-40lbs of "acidic waste" and water, I'd probably suggest she talk to a doctor instead of going on a diet. Haha.

How does that work? It's May, and almost all of Asia is in the northern hemisphere, and the bits that aren't are tropical, so not really "summer" and "winter."

I dunno, ask OP. I have no idea where she's located but she mentioned it in her second post.WHY I WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT: summer here on asia is almost done and classes are starting soon and i realize i don't want my body anymore and classes are going to start 2nd week of june. Time is running out and i don't want to seat down all day doing nothing.
But I will add that tropical regions do have summer and winter, they just have less of a temperature gradient and more of a rainy season.1 -
When I weighed 385 lb, and was eating under 1000 calories a day, I still didn't lose 40 lb in a month. It can't be done. It definitely can't be done at your current weight. It exceptionally definitely can't be done in a healthy way.
It sounds like you're looking for a quick fix, but the only thing that works is a lifestyle change.3 -
I know I'm sort of echoing what's been said throughout - but scientifically, no, you won't lose 40 in a month. At my highest weight I lost about 25lbs in 5 weeks or so. But I was 224lbs, so that makes a lot of sense. Higher BMR and big water loss.
Your stats are pretty similar to mine (I'm 161cm and 139lbs) and feasibly you can sensibly lose 5-10lbs at most in that time. I typically lose up to 8lbs/month at the moment. At our heights, even a few lbs is noticeable.
Don't go below 1200 (you'll feel horrible, it's not worth it), and do remember that progress is progress - these things take time but they're worth it in the end.2
