Is walking enough at a brisk pace for 30+ mins a daily a good way to lose weight?

Just looking for some general input on what are the best methods of losing weight cardio wise that don't include gyms walking etc

Pay attention to your food. Exercise is for health, not weight loss [unless you work out a lot]18

I lost 75 lbs and reached my goal weight with a simple combination of eating less and moving more. Walking is a good cardio workout, especially if done at a brisk pace or on an incline. I even bought a treadmill for those days when the weather doesn't let me walk outside.11

I walk every day. Usually 30-90 minutes. Great exercise, free, easily adjusted, and especially lots of fresh air. I live out in the country so quiet and peaceful to boot.6

I lost 110 lbs my first year doing not much more than walking briskly and staying on my calorie goal set by MFP. So yea, it's good exercise, and can earn you some extra calories daily.9 -
Calories matter most, but walking is great for cardiovascular health (and mental state for me at least). Most of my exercise comes from walking, and that's it. Not a big gym person.9

Walking is a great exercise. Make sure you walk fast enough to raise your heart rate and it helps if you are able to include steps or hills.
I keep a log of different routes I take and how many miles they are (and how many steps). Varying your route keeps things interesting. It also helps if you have a destination. My bank is 1-1/2 miles round trip, grocery store is 2-1/2 miles, etc.1 -
Weight is mainly about what you eat. It is much easier to eat or not eat 200 calories then to burn off 200 calories.
So for weight alone eat less then you burn.
For health and fitness walking is great and I am getting at least 11k steps in a day and I have started c25k and it is excellent as well.7 -

Yes and no. I get 50% of my daily calorie burn from walking and other NEAT. So, while I certainly do pay attention to what I eat, physical activity has made a very significant contribution to my weightloss (and will allow me to eat a reasonable amount at maintenance).
To the OP: As long as you don't increase your calorie intake to compensate for the extra calories burned when walking then, yes, walking is a great way to increase calories out and lose weight. Unless you're very heavy, it won't create a huge deficit. But if you were maintaining your weight on what you were eating before and don't change your eating habits, you could feasibly lose 0.5 pound/week just by adding a daily 30 minute walk.6 -
Watching what I was eating and walking 1 hour a day 5-7x a week is how I lost most of my weight!7

I love walking, it's my only form of exercise. I aim for a minimum of 15k steps a day, most of those are brisk pace. I get very few steps from my regular day to day living, less than 2000 most days. So anything above that is purposeful exercise.10

I've lost almost 21 and walking is my only exercise. I'm a single mom working full time. I don't have time to go to the gym with soccer and gymnastics after work nor can I afford the extra $40-$50+/month.
I walk usually 30-60 mins a day.6 -
As long as you're doing the work out in the KITCHEN and eating at a deficit you'll lose weight. A nice walk a few times a week is just a bonus. Plenty of folks have lost weight with walking as their own exercise.
Plus, everyone I ran into also exercising outside? Seemed super cool. Nice perk in the race for my faith of humanity. Pfft. Enjoy!4 -
I have been at this for 35 days and have lost about 12 pounds. I stay under my cal goal and walk an hr a day when weather allows dang ohio weather. My dr recommended this app and at least 10000 steps a day, so far so good. She told me slow n study wins this race if it drops too fast I'll gain it all back. Stay strong you can do it. Add me if you'd like.4

Walking is excellent for calorie burn, which for me allows by to eat comfortably with a 1000 calorie deficit (soon to be 750 as I need to slow it down a little).....
However, 80% of success (for me anyway) is in the kitchen. 20% is exercise. I shoot for 10K steps per day, and one hour of cardio/strength. But, the key for me still tracking my calories in. If you don't know how much you are eating, you'll only know that you are building up your cardio endurance.
Remember "you cannot outrun (or out-cardio) a bad diet" - said by numerous smart folks on these forums (only quoted by me).3 -
Walking is very good for you and can significantly increase your calories burned but weight loss is all about maintaining a calorie deficit.1

Keep in mind that walking doesn't burn a WHOLE lot of calories.
For example, as a 5'7" 155lbs woman, I burn about 115 calories for a moderate-paced 30 minute walk.
One Reese's chocolate cup is 100 cals, to put it in perspective.
The main point here is: walking is great for health - both physical and mental. But it's almost negligible when it comes to weight loss, especially when done in only a 30 minute increment. Weight loss happens in the kitchen.2 -
walking's great! i do at least an hour most mornings. It's been pretty much my only exercise, and I've managed to drop 35lbs. Just make sure to maintain a decent pace. I'm also walking 90mins a day . Can you advise on diet... that's where I'm failing I think still eating too much .

Hi, there is this great app and web site called my fitness pal...it allows you to log everything you eat....
Run the guided setup. Unless you're obesse, very tall, or extremely active do not pick 1.5lbs or 2lbs a week as your goal. 1lb a week is already a 20% (i.e. substantial) deficit for most people
Log truthfully, accurately, guage your progress using a trending weight app or web site... Profit from technology and succeed.2 -
OP walking is a great addendum to watching your calories and can be used effectively as your primary exercise based on your starting point and individual circumstances.
Using walking to perform your weekly quota of moderate exercise activity recommended by the WHO for all adults implies that you're walking at ~100 steps a minute, or maybe even a tad faster.
As such 30 minutes of moderate exercise walking will produce approximately 3000 steps.
ALL steps, of course, do count, and if the walking is performed in continuous bouts that are as short as 8 minutes there is cardiovascular benefit and improvement!
However do keep in mind that the first 35 to 40 minutes off non sitting activity (or approximately the first 3500 steps) a day are already accounted for in the definition of sedentary used by MFP.
So do make sure that your 30 minutes are on top, as opposed to of instead of other activity!!!1 -
Yeah, that's great exercise. Calories overall is most important, of course.
But it is a great stress reducer, a good way to replace boredom snacking. Also, individuals really should get a certain amount of cardio whether to lose weight or not - it's good for your heart and for bone density and all sorts of things.3 -
It works...and is a healthy habit with benefits other than weight loss.
If you can work in some hills, that will burn even more. Or try experimenting with varying your pace...every few minutes walk a bit faster for a bit.0 -
I am a fan of outside walking. Our family belongs to the local YMCA, which I go to for swimming laps, yoga, or elliptical, but walking outside is far and away my favorite things. Find music or a podcast that you like and go walk. I am listening to Alec Baldwin's terrific podcast Here's the Thing right now-love it and each episode is between 35 and 60 minutes. I try to get up at 5:15 and get in a 35 minutes before work and then another 35 in the evening if possible. Totally doable and enjoyable!2
