Vacation woes

So I've already posted about maintenance while on vacation, but I had another question. Does anyone travel with anything special (shakes/powder, bands, food scale, etc.) when going on vacation to support maintenance?

No...shakes and supplements have nothing to do with maintenance and traveling with a food scale seems pretty over the top to me.
Unless you just go berzerk, there's really not a whole lot of damage you can do on a week long vacation or whatever. Vacations are for fun and enjoyment. I've never put on actual fat weight (or minimal at the most) on a vacation...scale weight that I gain can be attributable to airplane bloat and eating out more, so higher sodium...it's always gone within a couple of days.
I'm way more active when I'm on vacation anyway...seeing this and that and walking around a lot whereas at home I'm behind a desk everyday.
It's never been an issue for me...I enjoy my vacations.12 -
On my last three vacations, I lost weight. I was way more active, and way too busy to be worrying about eating until I was hungry enough that it demanded attention. So no, I took no supplements, scales, or anything else with me. I am leaving for another vacation in less than a week now. I plan to enjoy the trip. Not even going to log, just attempt to make better choices along the way.6

I just work more activity in to my day every day. It's not hard considering I'm not tethered to a desk all day. I don't worry about the odd pound - it'll come off within a few days when I get home and revert to normal eating habits.2

Nope - When I travel it is usually not to some deserted island here if I need something I buy it there2
-
For dance exchanges & workshop weekends (rather than vacations), I'll often bring some of my containers of yogurt & oats or Clif bars or other 'on the run' quick food (but a lot of that is due to limited control over schedule and wanting something I can grab in the morning or when hungry without having to resort to fast food). A leisurely vacation, probably not. (And on those I usually have takeout containers from dinner that I left on the AC vent in the hotel room to eat in the morning so I don't have to wait for food).0

Nope. I need all the space and luggage weight I can get for my sexy shoes and clothes10
-
No way! I travel with a lot of clothes and footwear, not to mention the new additions I would be purchasing while I'm there. I need all the space I can get!
Plus I can last a long time in between meals so I don't need to bring snacks either.4 -
I was worried about my last small vacation because I knew I'd be spending a lot of time sedentary in the car, and I'm used to well over an hour of activity a day. Turns out, when I don't move as much, I'm not as hungry. Who'd have thought? It was pretty easy to make smarter choices and eat smaller portions when the "runger" wasn't as bad. By the time we left for home, the hotel mini-fridge had enough leftover half-sandwiches and salads that I had plenty of food for the 12 hour drive home LOL!3

Where are you going??? I love vacations! I bring workout clothes and workout at the resort or hotel. Other than that I dont log weigh anything. I don't think about it. Enjoy vacation!3
-
I am going on vacation in a few weeks and I don't plan on taking anything "diet" related. I am going to estimate my calories just to have the information, but not truely weighing and logging. It is only for 10 days and I plan on enjoying myself and not being tied to a scale or my food diary.3

I pack protein bars. Family vacations are very unstructured for us, so sometimes lunch will be at 3 pm or dinner at 10 pm and while the kids snack on crackers, granola bars and other quick non perishable things I have a Quest bar to tide me over for a bit. I don't bring a scale or any exercise equipment, I let loose and generally just being active throughout the day's activities balances out the extra calories I eat.3
-
No.. its my vacation to enjoy my self, take a break from everything, especially from my food scale, and definitely do not want to be drinking protein shakes or bars on my vacation, I don't enjoy them all that much at home when I'm short on protein let alone while on vacation..2

I went on vacation recently and maintained. I was quite happy. I brought a ton of snacks but really didn't eat them. I enjoyed the food and listened to my belly. And yes on vacation many times we are very active easily burning extra calories. Enjoy yourself !1
-
I take protein bars to snack on until I get to the destination (depending how long) but once I'm there I just log as best I can without measuring cups or a scale. Has always turned out fine in the past!1

I love St Maarten.
If you are anything like me your days will be hiking, walking, swimming, and snorkling, with a good bit of lazing on the beach with a cool drink in your hand thrown in for luck.
There are some incredibly good local restaurants and bars that serve delicious food that can be quite low cal, others are just your run of the mill deep fried get anywhere in the USA establishments. Go for the local and experiment with flavours.
Don't take any supplements or your scale with you. Yes you will probably over eat a bit, but your activity level could be way higher that it is at home.
Keep in mind your portion sizes and try not to have too many fru fru cocktails as they are calorie bombs- do have a few though
It will take a week or two to shed the water weight from flying, heat, and excess sodium, so don't panic when you get home.
Cheers, h.2 -

Yes!!! My bike, my skis, my swim gear, and my hiking stuff.
I wind up losing weight every time I go anywhere.3 -
I do! I find a gym wherever I am (except OBX - there are NO gyms there apparently, I don't get it) and pay the guest fee so I can continue to lift heavy during vacation. So, I bring my whey and also my pre-workout. I also bring protein bars in order to save calories for a big dinner with dessert every night.1

In my opinion, part of maintaining is being able to spend a week indulging. You come home and hold yourself accountable! I say relax on your vacation. Have a donut, go out for pizza, etc. Make sure you get as much physical activity as possible. When you come home just hit the gym hard and reduce calories for a week or two to make up for it.
You could also loose five pounds before your trip so that you don't feel guilty if you gain a bit.3 -
the only thing I bring is my work out gear ....1

Ah! I'm about to go on a vacation myself and I'm in a similar boat.
I'm actually really looking forward to being able to dedicate so much time to working out, hotel gym, running on the beach, volleyball, hiking, kayaking... I'm sure by the time we go out to dinner we'll need every ounce of that food .0 -
Preworkout & BCAAs for me, depending on whether there is a gym where I am going. If i am staying in a hotel then I will plan on working out in the hotel gym and thus will bring those along, however if the vacation spot is unlikely to have a gym I will leave them at home. Getting your workout in and bringing a couple supplements along doesn't necessarily mean you aren't enjoying yourself or relaxing. I tend to wake up early on vacation and get my workout in first thing, that way I can indulge the rest of the day without feeling guilty. The freaks come out at night after all.
And Unless you are in the middle of competition prep or something similarly intense I can't see a reason to ever bring a food scale on vacation.1 -
I travel a lot. I do bring instant grits for breakfast because I like them, they're easy, and they're 100 calories. I carry kind bars to keep me from eating a high calorie snack when I'm out. I carry tea bags because I love tea and there's no calories there. Saves a lot of money too.
I enjoy traveling and eating. I pick the specialty of where I'm going, have a reasonable portion, and enjoy every ounce of it. I work the rest of my calories around that and try to hit my exercise goals.0 -

I took my bathroom scale w/me on a 5 day wine tasting "vacation" last week. I took it because I was driving and could; wouldn't if I had to fly.
Glad I had it because I'm a data nerd and hate it when I am missing any data points. Weighed myself and logged all of my food daily.
Brought along protein/trail bars and dried apricots for snacks. Brought some protein powder too but didn't use it.
Ate "out" for lunch and dinner but just had coffee, a protein bar and some fruit for breakfast each day. Ate pretty much whatever I liked for lunch and dinner, including lots of wine and some beer, and even a pizza and some foie gras for lunch and dinner.
Didn't gain any weight to speak of and enjoyed my vacation immensely.1 -

There is a YMCA there. Some of the rental homes come w/ a temporary membership. Also, many of the neighorhoods have clubhouses that have small gyms. Check w/ the rental company of the cottage you are renting.0 -
"Vacation" and "woes" are two words that should not go together. The fact that you've put them together suggests you're worrying about this way too much. You're not going to set yourself back that much no matter what. Just go, have fun, and don't worry.1

I take my normal shakes for breakfast (I just like them), and I typically buy lunch to prepare myself (it's just cheaper) and then eat out at dinner - whatever I decide I want.
I also get in LOTS of steps, sightseeing, beach-walking, whatever.
Enjoy!0 -
Just returned from 4 nights at Tenque Verde Ranch...I was up every morning around 5:30 to gear up for my morning mountain bike ride...then it was off to breakfast and then the rest of the morning was spent horseback riding before lunch. After lunch we took it easy and spent some time around the pool enjoying some vodka tonics in the 100* temperatures and swimming with the kids. Dinners were great and they had a cowboy cookout one night that was fantastic.
I had no issues maintaining weight.1 -
I think I burn more calories per day on vacation than not.
I came back from a week long cruise with 10lbs. Within a week of going back to the normal grind, I was down 11lbs. Go figure, despite all the booze and delicious calorie disaster food everywhere, managed to lose a little weight? But then again, I made it a point to never use the elevator unless I had absolutely no other choice and we had pretty active excursions. It was amazing to me how much running around you have to do on a cruise ship. Got plenty of miles in just from that.2 -

Oh yeah. My first summer of weight loss I did a great job maintaining on a cruise. Very active excursions as well. I worked out 6 out of the 8 days and didn't get ridiculous at every meal. Just came back well tanned and the exact same weight I left.0
