Fasting 28 days?

In 1979, I actually thought it would be a good idea to try a 7 day fast. I only lasted 6 days because it was miserable. I couldn't concentrate in my college classes or focus on homework.
Tell him it's a terrible idea for all the reasons in the posts above, and also for the health of his brain, which he shouldn't take for granted. And I agree you should tell your parents.
Also, tell him how proud you are of him for wanting to make some changes, and for having the courage and determination to plan such a difficult method of weight loss. Suggest that an equally difficult but healthier option would be to eat only meat, eggs, dairy, veggies and fruit for 28 days. No sweets, grains, sodas, etc.
That might satisfy his curiosity to try out being an ascetic.

And can you tell us how it all works out? I'm curious!2

I don't know, I hope so. Like I said some previous posts back, I've left some brownies lying around, it hadn't been touched so far, but when night comes, we will see. Lol.0 -
If it were me, I'd consider mentioning to him and your parents that he's a minor and can be hospitalized against his will and hooked up to an IV and/or feeding tube.9

Someone else posted this in another group I'm in... I will never understand how someone who took years to become overweight thinks they're going to "fix" anything by killing themselves slowly and agonizingly in 28 days. Nevermind the lean mass he's going to lose (which is his metabolic currency). This is idiotic1

For sure that's a good idea about encouraging him; kind of like reverse psychology, I'm more like the nagging sister or the type to brag about his favorite sweets in his face though, it'll be hard on my part lol, but I'll be sure to try it. And yeah I'll keep you guys updated.

While it may be a stretch for your usual relationship, taking the different approach might be more likely to get his attention.2 -
Little brothers sometimes crave respect from their older sisters.1

Yeah I already informed my parents, they've told him a bunch of times about it not being a good idea, yet he still insists on it, so ridiculous.
Um, what? He is a CHILD. Your parents are the PARENTS. He doesn't get to "insist" on this kitten. He is deliberately harming himself. Pretty sure in most western countries that's grounds for him to be sent to a mental health hospital against his will.17 -

This. He is a minor, end of story. If my child did this-you have two options: stop this dumb "fast" or find your self in a hospital. If he doesn't like it, too bad. Parents are there to be parents, not to be their kid's best friend (not saying they are mutually exclusive).8 -
This is not something you should have to deal with. Your parents need to step in and make him see how stupid he's being, or take him to the hospital.7

What kind of supervision does one need whilst doing this water fast? I just don't understand why somebody would take the risk.
Medical supervision. As I stated. Water fasts are and have been used more morbidly obese patients for decades.
In no way am I advocating them, especially not in this instance but my post was to provide information for those that cared.2 -

There are some people on full time fasting at the detox clinic I go to. They can have from 1 day to 7 days fasting under medical supervision. And then they're carefully put on a light diet, like very light waterly oatmeal to ease the digestion. But they do it only if they're healthy, for example I can't fast even for a day because of my gallbladder issues. My friend was refused it too because her blood pressure dropped too much and doctors insisted on her eating.
Fasting is very popular but must be done under medical surveillance only.0 -
Tell him to read up on the irish hunger strikes and the lasting impact on those who survived but lived with the lasting damage to thier bodies and passed away in the years afterwards8

Your parents are letting their 15 year old starve for 28 days?5
-
To be fair, the parents probably aren't 'letting him'
He is 15 and presumably almost the size as of an adult - the parents can't physically force him to eat.
If he does it for too long ( more than a week?) I suggest they call the mental health team of their hospital ( or however you would access such service where they live) and talk to them about enforced hospitalisation.
As one has to, with any extreme eating disorder that puts life at risk.10 -

I don't understand how your parents are allowing this.2

Child abuse.
In many states, this would trigger a visit by child services if reported.5 -
My first question, OP, did he lurk around the brownies last night and at least take a bite?
Where the parents in this really? A child this age is not capable of making such drastic choices, while a 15 year old may in size look grown up enough to make his own decisions, he is still developing and incapable of making good choices at all times. As for me, an intervention would have happened way before he/she got four days into this. I am my children's protector, and in this case a child that needs protecting from themselves.
Allowing this to even happen 1 time is a recipe for disaster for how he/she will model decision making in the future, as well as obtaining eating disorders in the future, etc.3 -
I think calling it child abuse is harsh and unfair on the parents.
They are not making him do this or wanting him to do it and may not know how to address it.
Just like parents of teenagers who do other self destructive things eg cutting themselves or have eating disorders
And parents don't want to over react to every silly thing their child chooses to do, many are self limiting and peter out without intervention - which is why I suggested if he continues for dangerous length of time, say, a week, then contact mental health services.11 -
Well the good news is likely he won't last 28 days. You said he is 15? Likely he is just young and dumb. Sounds like something parents should be involved in.1
-
Is he over 18? Not much you can do. If he's under 18 your parents can have him hospitalized.
Chances are he will eat when the hunger gets unbearable, but if he doesn't, he won't live.0 -

This. You can anonymously report it to CPS.3 -

If the parents know about it and do nothing it is a form of child abuse called neglect.8 -
If your parents aren't willing to take action on this (and he is still fasting), it's time to talk to another trusted adult. Is there a teacher, guidance counselor, or nurse at his school? Could you call your brother's doctor/pediatrician?3
-
Is he even overweight?
The hopeful part of me says that once he's starts experiencing low blood pressure in the shower he will realize it's not a good idea but i don't know many people who don't have an existing or emerging eating disorder who would commit to a 28 day water fast.
Your parents need to intervene. Even if he doesn't go the 28 days he's likely to continue to try dangerous food behaviors afterwards.2 -
Is he practicing for the show Naked & Afraid?0
