I think 'looking like a nerd' is a pretty outdated concept nowadays. Sure, there are some that still fit the bill, but the majority are just regular people that also like looking good and don't fit in that outdated prejudice. Just needed to say something about that.
No your comment wasn't necessary
It was to me
When I said "look like a nerd" I meant someone who looks like a gamer / dresses up in Pokemon rubber suits / has purple hair, a nose ring & knows every line in all the Star Wars movies...YOU are the one who assumed that there was a prejudice in a nerds appearance, not me. So I guess by jumping to that conclusion you should aim that little comment of yours to yourself
"I may not look like a nerd but pretty much every tshirt I own has some kind of gaming logo on it." You do dress in 'nerd' fashion.
"knows every line in all the Star Wars movies" This has nothing to do with appearance.
"purple hair, a nose ring" Plenty of youngsters have this. This doesn't really relate to being a nerd.
All that's missing from that is the rubber suit. I'm just going to assume here then that you think nerds walk around in rubber suits in daily life. Cool, you totally made your point.
Blah blah blah, like I said, you were the only one in this conversation who assumed looking like a nerd was a prejudice, therefore you're the one with the problem. You shouldn't assume such hateful things against people, & if there is a "cliche nerd look" that you were speaking of, why should that be a bad or unattractive thing anyway?! You should really try to be more open minded & less hateful
Wow, you really managed to make a huge thing out of this. You must be fun at parties. Yes, there is the common image of nerds that they don't really care about what they look like because they have other priorities. The fact is that nerdy things have become pop culture, which lead to an enormous amout of people with huge diversity among them to classify themselves as nerd. The fact that you feel I'm a closeminded person because I'm saying that you wouldn't recognize a nerd in the crowd is a couple of bridges too far don't you think? (oh and hey, another prejudice!) I was merely speaking of prejudice because you said you didn't look like a nerd. Apparently you have still have some sort of image of what such a person is supposed to look like. Chill, we all love nerd stuff here. Lets keep this a happy place shall we?
But I never said the cliche was a negative thing, you said it. So long as you haven't got a problem anymore we were always all good here. Try not to make assumptions in future without thinking though:)
I really don't know where you got that I said anything negative. Do we have a different definition of prejudice? I stand by my point, but I don't see how that is a problem to you.
Lol, why don't you just admit it? The only reason you jumped on my comment was because you had a little problem with my appearance. Sooo many people posted pictures of themselves, claiming how much of a nerd they LOOKED like, yet you saved up your silly comment for my post...why?? Well you and I both know the answer to that one. Seriously just go away and save your debates for someone who can be bothered cos I'm done here.
I don't have any problem with your appearance. Other people have mentioned all their nerdy behaviors. Posting pictures of cosplays they go in. You were they only one commenting about looking or not looking like a nerd. Thus, I commented on you (woow, surprise <- yes, I'm also starting to feel a bit annoyed). There's your why. But anyway, you already seem to know all my thought processes, so I think we're done here indeed. Enjoy your day.
You finally get it then! Precisely what i was saying when I said I don't look like a nerd! I didn't have a photo of myself in coaplay or in gamer dress. That's all I meant from it.
Then actually say that next time. Say what you mean, with the right words, so we can all be on the same page. I literally interpreted it like you said it, nothing more. I took the liberty of deleting the last sentence of that quote. You know, the very childish one you keep repeating the same gist of every post.
No! Why should I have to explain myself to you and your assumptions!? Besides I figured my comment was self explanatory when I said directly after the "look" comment that I had gamer tshirts & was into all that crap. Shouldn't you have assumed that's what I meant? I made an innocent comment on a friendly page and was interrogated by a wack job. Everyone else here has some way of defining what thy think nerdy is & "looks like", only you singled me out, you have to look yourself in the mirror & ask yourself why that was. You are the only person here who has had prejudice thoughts.l, that's why you assumed what you did, cos that's how your screwy angry mind works. And the last comment was the truth & the root of all this garbage, that's the last thing you should delete. Now *kitten* off, you've wasted enough of my time.

You probably already know about it, but just in case you haven't Check out Will Wheatons show on YouTube "Tabletop" one of my favorite web shows. He plays a new board game each episode with a bunch of his friends/low level celebs.

Yess! I actually didn't know that specific show, but I love geek&sundry. So far mostly for their d&d games with matthew (critical role). If I ever get to play with a dungeon master like him I'll be eternally grateful. There are about 80(?) sessions so far, so it's a lot to catch up on xD
Anyway, I just started watching the cards against humanity game of TableTop. Thank you! Do you have a favorite video of theirs?1 -
Critical Role and Tabletop are very popular in my house! We've bought a few games purely because of Tabletop Qwirkle and Munchkin are my favorite so far.5

There are some amazing games that they play, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Gloom, Munchkin, Star Fluxx and several others.
But my favourite episode is The resistance. very entertaining!!2 -
Bit of a nerd and just getting started (re-started, technically) on here. I play games mostly and used to play WoW pretty seriously but am a bit more casual now. I don't mind D3 or a game or two of OW, although I suck. Otherwise I was raised on Final Fantasy 6 and try to catch just about everything FF related. I'd like to get into DnD, but haven't made the jump yet. Currently watching all the old Critical Roles.2

Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek fan here. I've been on MFP for years but usually just keep to myself. I don't have many "friends" on here but would love to have some additional support and encouragement along with the chance to chat about common interests.0
-
Aww man, these are my people! I love Star Wars, Star Trek, LotR, Marvel, DC, MST3k, some anime, Tabletop/Critical Role, DnD, Warmachine/Hordes, Magic the Gathering, WoW, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, GW2, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Supernatural, Good Eats....I could go on and on! I would love more friends with similar interests!!5

Any wow players here that want some friends to dungeon and raid with?0

That was amazing and hilarious. Mindkitten games are my favorite, so I'm going to have to buy this
Another great one is machiavelli, but I'm pretty sure most people know that one.1 -
Good to meet some fellow nerds! feel free to add me. I had MFP since 2013 but had to make a new account. I love D&D, World of Warcraft (Horde), Dragon Age, LOTR, Game of Thrones, StarWars, Skyrim, etc. I also cosplay and have a few nerdy tattoos2
-
It's awesome that there's such a large nerdy/geeky community on MFP! Star Trek is my first and deepest love, but I also adore Firefly, Dollhouse, Buffy (big Whedon fan), Doctor Who (Classic and NuWho), Torchwood, Red Dwarf, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Supernatural, Hitchhiker's Guide, Black Mirror, etc. I love to cosplay and go to cons. In fact, if anyone else is going to either Denver Comic Con or the Star Trek con in Vegas, let me know! Also, if you feel like it, go ahead and add me.1

Hey RPGers, what age would you think is old enough to start kids playing tabletop RPGs, and what is a good system to start with?
You see, my son is six, and he made up a game and has been essentially "DMing" my wife and daughter for the past couple of weeks. He has drawn rather elaborate maps, monster cards for enemies, and even has an inventory sheet to keep track of their character's equipment - he only reads at a kindergarten level so he mainly draws pictures of the equipment with numbers representing how much damage they do or can absorb. His game is very D&D like, and seems to be a blend of Minecraft, Undertale, and Ninja Turtles.
It's probably too early just yet, but maybe in another couple years, I think. IIRC, I started with Basic D&D in about the 2nd or 3rd grade and quickly moved on to AD&D, but that was back in the '80's (If you've watched Stranger Things, I had those very same books) and I've been out of the loop so long I wouldn't know where to start. Suggestions?4 -

Precocious! I don't have any advice to offer on specific games, but definitely nurture that creativity
My oldest started with Pathfinder when he was 12 but has gravitated more to D&D in the last 4 years. There are others he and his friends play now, but I have to admit RPG's are not my cuppa, so I sort of tune them out1 -
Mid-level geek/nerd here as well. Harry Potter (proud Ravenclaw), LotR, Whovian, Buffy, MCU (Team Cap), Sherlock and I can still sing the entire Tiny Toon Adventures theme song. I also do theatre and play a little acoustic guitar. Considering going back to school for a STEM degree in the future... don't want to spend the rest of my life in this cubicle.1

Why y'all got to make us gamers nerds.. sigh... <returns to playing Horizon: Zero Dawn>1

My job title is Cloud Architect so I think that makes me a nerd of sorts.0

60% of the time, it works everytime.2 -

I still have my original D&D set and tailor it down for the kids (9, 7, and 3) to make it fun. I've used some of my old modules or ones I've developed in the past. They have their own character sheets and build up backstories. My 7 yo daughter is the map maker and draws out the dungeons as I describe it and I give them puzzles and traps to figure out. My 9 yo son took the maps and constructed a replica in Minecraft.
It's been amazing seeing their ability to reason and apply what they learn in school to this and make it their own. I have also seen a great feedback in their desire to read and reason out problems for themselves.3 -

I think that fostering the life skills creativity, imagination, math skills, teamwork are all great to do, especially at an early age. As I don't have kids myself, I can say "when" is a good time, but DnD is very flexible and campaigns can be designed to be more kid friendly in content, with puzzles, RP, skill checks, etc. I have not played any Pathfinder, but I imagine it could be similarly tailored.0 -
What a great idea, to friend people on MFP who are into this sort of stuff! Although, I really do have to say it, cause I'm really picky like that...I think you're looking for geeks, not nerds!
I love Doctor Who, Star Trek, Stargate, Dark Matter, Supernatural (and a bunch of other stuff), so I'm totally a geek! More on the hard-core sci fi side. I'm less into fantasy, comics or mainstream sci-fi like West World, although I do dabble in them. I LOVE conventions, although I don't cosplay.
(And as it happens, I'm also a nerd...I'm a mathematician)
One of the main reasons I want to lose weight is so that I will look better in photo ops! Most actors are really thin, so my...chubbiness, shall we say...is super apparent in photo ops.
People with like interests, please feel free to friend me! Especially if you like to do photo ops too!1 -
Super Nerd, found my ppl. Add me got a ton of weight to loose and would love your support.
Into Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, taking a break from video gaming while I cycle my legs off, so into bicycling to get some regular exercise.1 -
Thanks for the feedback, now I'm tempted to pick up the D&D starter set and trying to tailor it to my kids. I went through some boxes some months ago and I think the only old AD&D book I still have is Oriental Adventures. I still have all of my MegaTraveller and Car Wars books though, but I think my son would rather play a sword and sorcery game than a space game (and in Car Wars, my friends and I mostly just built cars for arena battles).
BTW, he won't let me join his RPG because Momma and Sister are already level 5 and I'd be too far behind.3 -
I live in butt *kitten* Arkansas...no D&D or M!TG players in a 20000 mile radius (probably), let alone Trekkies/Trekkers.0

My husband and I had a Star Wars wedding. We frequently (yet accidentally) end up dressing in matching theme t-shirts, resulting in hilarity like people asking us if we were going to Comic-Con and getting a "uh, nope. This is just how we dress." Our daughter's BFF is R2D2 and she has a Star Wars nursery. I'd say we are more of a Marvel family, but I have a healthy Wonder Woman obsession. I'm down about 228 lbs from my highest, with just under 10 to go. I pretty much accept any friend request that comes with a note, so feel free to add me.2

Anyone planning on attending Toronto Fan Expo at the end of August?2

estherdragonbat wrote: »Anyone planning on attending Toronto Fan Expo at the end of August?
Lordy (to quote James Comey ) I hope it's better organized than the Dallas Fan Expo this year was! Due to 2 of the biggest names having scheduling conflicts (Norman Reedus and Jeffrey Dean Morgan) they tried to cram 2 days worth of people into one, and there was barely room to breath on the convention floor. We spend most of Saturday in panels and avoided that cluster, but whew, there were some *kitten*ed off folks who bought tickets to see those two!
My boys got their pics with Stan Lee and Alan Tudyk, and we got to sit in on each of their Q&As plus Alex Kingston and the cast of RWBY, so they were thrilled.
Edit - I just check the guest list for Toronto. Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day!? I'm so jealous!! Plus Matt Smith, Billie Piper, John Barrowman (he was also in Dallas - he sang at his q&a ), Karen Gillan, and Catherine Tate - quite the Doctor Who ensemble!0
