Water

I know water is key but I have a question. Do you really have to drink half your weight in water or can you just drink water all the time and have the same results?

...results? drink until your pee is light yellow/clear. youd die if you drank half your weight in water each day...Not sure what "results" you want but being hydrated feels beter anyway..2

Drink enough to keep you hydrated2

Water is "key" for...what? Besides Hydration?1

I drink 8 cups of water a day and done. I have read about drinking half your weight in water every day. That will never be me.2
-
I aim for 8 but usually average 6. I bought a water bottle that's 3 cups exactly which makes it super easy to track my water.1

I have a 3 cup bottle as well. I just make sure it gets filled three times and I'm good for the day.0 -
It's half your weight in ounces, or some such arbitrary rule. Not half your actual weight.
200lbs= 100oz water.1 -

200lbs= 100oz water.
I knew what it meant. For me that would be 125 ozs at this point. I'm good with the 64 ozs from the 8 cups of water lol0 -
So if I weigh myself in kilograms or stone, I don't have to drink as much water?
84 kg = 42 oz. water?
(Yes, I'm being sarcastic. Maybe I should add "drink half your weight in water" to the "things people say that annoy you" thread.)5 -
185lbs i drink a minimum of a gallon a day.. u should too.. close to two galloms when im working out hard!!

Completely unnecessary to drink that much. She'd spend all day peeing it back out. If you want, then that's your choice but there's no advantage to it.3 -

Why? (honest question)1 -
What kind of results?
I don't track my water intake. I have never understood the reasoning for doing that.
Drinking plenty of water is good for your health... But as long as you are hydrated and your pee isn't bright yellow/orange then i don't see any need for "tracking" it (Except for maybe some health issue)1 -

There is such a thing as too much water...........http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/tc/drinking-enough-water-topic-overview#11 -
I try to stay hydrated because I get UTI's (TMI?), but my doctor says anything counts as liquid (i.e. diet soda and iced tea), and I believe her. Works for me!0

I'll never understand the water obsession and those who continue to drink once they are at or beyond acceptable hydration levels. You aren't gaining anything by doing so and you don't win any awards.6

All these rules are ridiculous. They are the result of "research " done by Nestle and Perrier. Drink when you are thirsty. All liquids except maybe alcohol count. If your urine appears dark, it is a sign of dehydration...now be Free!1

Water is in everything. Go by pee color.2

The result you get from drinking water is proper hydration. There's no magical amount of water...your urine should be pale yellow to almost clear...if it is, you are properly hydrated.
Hydration needs are highly variable...I ride a lot and live in the desert at over a mile high in elevation...my hydration needs are much different than someone living at sea level in a temperate climate who is more sedentary.2 -
I drink water when my body tells me it needs it. That generally works out to four or five 20 oz bottles a day.2
-
My advice is to get to know your body and drink when you're thirsty. Remember, food and other drinks all have water in them so you are getting water every time you open your mouth. People have been sold the idea to drink way too much water. Why? Because somebody is making a profit on it. If I drank as much as many people advise, I'd be completely unproductive because I'd be in the ladies' room all day.0

I used to track and try to hit 8 or more glasses a day.
Gave up as I came to realize it was pointless. I'm hydrated, pee is a decent colour and I drink when thirsty.0 -

Yes! I like it.1 -
So it works out to 1/32 of your weight in water, if you hold to that rule. Which I don't.0

LOL i couldn't drink that much either! I was just trying to clarify what the OP meant by drinking half your weight in water, and was hoping she didn't think that everyone HAS to drink literally half their weight in water.0 -
I weigh 150lbs and drink over 200 ounces of water on workout days. But I need to because I sweat way more than average when working out, do at least 3 hours ofg working out per day, use a dry sauna twice per day (deep sweating) and take Spironolactone & Metformin which unfortunately cause sweating AND dehydration. So 200 ounces is barely enough for me.
But if you're otherwise "normal", not taking meds or weird fat burners with caffeine and other dehydrating ingredients, using saunas, etc....a gallon should suffice if you're working out pretty hard.
But pee running nearly clear is your easier indicator. And peeing regularly, of course.0 -

Yes. I carry a 64 oz Stainless bottle and usually need to refill 3 to 4 times before going home around 5pm. Then I sip only about 64oz total from early evening until the next morning. A huge bottle DOES make it easier, though.0
