Anyone in Rexburg Idaho for the eclipse?
When I get back from this Solar Eclipse expedition, I plan on getting some miles in. Some high mtns too. With killer vertical.
Not officially announcing I'm back, but soon. That includes posting to Strava.
Gotta update and dust off my Garnin.
11 days to think of a September goal
Can't wait to see those upwards miles!
@ROBOTFOOD Welcome back. Hope you have a good viewing.
You need to look into the Golden Ultra with it's Vertical Mile

For those who are interested, Ian Sharman won his 4th Leadville yesterday.5

Wow, @fitoverfortymom, what an impressive accomplishment! My drop was 40, and I know what it took to do, and what its taken to keep it off. You definitely get a "woo" from me!

Tide was wrong for my beloved beach run, so I ran the bike path along the beach road instead; a poor substitute! Did do my cool down walk and dip, so all was not lost. 81 degrees with 100% humidity and 0 wind at 0645.
There's never any elevation on my runs, so I felt obligated to show the bridge I ran over. Probably all of 8' elevation, but hey; enough to show on the chart!
Almost to my first monthly goal. Pretty happy about that.

@MobyCarp and @skippygirlsmom - Thanks for the toenail advice. It happened in March and I have been letting it grow out - it just seems to keep splitting - but I will just be more patient. I have bigger problems to focus on now anyway....
I WILL NOT MAKE MY GOAL THIS MONTH.
August goals are 90 miles and figuring out what all the info from my new watch means about my training.
Aug 3 - 10 miles
Aug 4 - 6.2 miles
Aug 5- 7.5 miles
Aug 6- too rainy/ wimpy
Aug 7- 7 miles
Aug 10- 7.3 miles
Aug 12 - 12.2 miles
Aug 13 - 4.8 miles
Aug 14 - 2.1 miles - short sunset river run - but with 610 feet of elevation gain
Aug 17- 7.7 miles
Aug 19- 10 miles
Aug 20th - diagnosed with DVT
Total 74.8/90 goal -
So I spent the early morning hours today in the ED getting treatment for completely occluded left iliac vein, mostly complete occlusion of the profunda and some partial distal occlusion in the calf. I may not have figured out what all the data from my new watch means - but I did figure out why those hills have been kicking my butt the last 2 weeks. UGH! I should be fine now that I have medication - but I can't even hobble from the bed to the bathroom without major problems. And.... I was supposed to be going with my husband in 2.5 weeks for our first non-working vacation together since the kids were born. We were (I am still holding out some misguided hope for "are") hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc, a nice hike through the French, Italian and Swiss Alps.
OK - I hope that is the end of my whining. Really, this isn't so bad.

Alas, back to school ate me. Plus I've had a week of totally unexplained leg issues - random muscle pain and weakness, calf cramps, joint aches. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, unaffected by rest, stretching, elevation, foam rolling, massage. My guess is something viral / systemic.
Finally caught up on sleep, and went out for a 9am run. 82 degrees, 82% humidity, bright sun without a speck of shade. A bit past two miles, I took a sip of my lukewarm water, and in less than a minute I had stomach cramps. Walked it off, started running again, cramp came back. So I gave up and walked the rest of the way. Overall, a pretty crappy run, but a crappy run is better than no run.6 -

Wonderful long run this morning. I went 7 miles so I don't feel like I need to put long in quotes. I went 6.3 last Sunday and I was planning run the same route. But I miscalculated a little. Last week I drove to the park because I was going to go by the grocery store after and today I just ran from the house and didn't take into consideration that that added. 5 miles there and .5 miles home. I got up a little earlier than I usually do on Sunday and it was nice because it was only 77°F when I went. It was up to 85°F when I got home, but for August in Texas it was really nice.
I did skip the kr30dc the last few days. I hate to be a quiter, but I was finding it to be more of chore. I never find yoga to be a chore so I may just stick with what I know I love. I do like some of the exercises he does though so maybe I will work some of them in occasionally.
@wishiwasarunner I'm so sorry to hear about the DVT. Hope you are better soon.
@sarahthes Welcome to the group. I'm looking forward to hearing your race report.
@fitoverfortymom Welcome. @mobycarp and @pastorvincent have great advice. I am a fairly new runner and just recently went from 3 to 4 days of running. This group is very welcoming and a wealth of good information.

Today's long run was really great. We finally had a break in the weather (yesterday at 6 am it was 70F and 100% humidity and today was 63F and 80%; the dew points were almost 10 degrees different between yesterday and today), and I felt amazing for pretty much all of this run. I started at 6 am doing a 6 mile loop with two of the women in my running group, and we kept it nice and easy and chatty the whole way. Then we met with a larger group at 7 and did a hilly route. Everyone but me did the 5.5-6 mile cut-back version of the route, so I extended the 8 mile route out to 10 so that I didn't have to do a 2 mile loop at the end.
From mile 9.5-10.0 was a fun, steep downhill, so from mile 9.5-13.5 is when I did my four fast tempo/MP miles, and then the last 2.5 miles were recovery miles jogging it in. The four fast miles felt really good. It was refreshing to switch gears to the low-8:00/sub-8:00 range and feel strong. The last 3 long runs that I've done have honestly felt pretty *kitten* so having a good, strong run today was a good confidence booster (especially after Wed and Thurs runs kicked my butt).
I think I'm still going to take an extra rest/easy day this upcoming week and use it as a cutback week. I won't be meeting my 250 goal, but this is the first 200+ month that I'll have on the books since last October. Most of the year, I've been in the 120-150 range. It's nice to be back to moderately high volume and a real training schedule again. I've definitely seen a huge improvement in my mood. Wishing I hadn't been such a bum April-June now!
Upcoming Races:
Oct 8: Steamtown Marathon
Oct 22: Perfect 10 (10 Miler)
Nov 5: Princeton Half Marathon (pacer)7 -

That's still a great race. Sorry that your GI system rebelled against your plan. There are some things that are hard to control

Nominal challenge goal: 260 miles
Real goals: Stay healthy. Train well toward the Rochester Marathon. Win my age group at Pound the Ground 10K on August 9. [Done, 41:26 4th overall] Run a respectable sub-20 5K at Bergen on August 12. [Done, 19:47] Run the USATF Masters Mile (road) in under 6 minutes on August 25.
Today's notes – Went out just before lunch to test whether I could run today. I knew at about 0.3 mile that this would not even be a complete warmup, but managed 0.53 mile in 4:08 before it was time to stop so I could live to run another day. Garmin says it was 75º F (24º C) with 69% relative humidity; my porch thermometer said it was 81º F (27º C). It was sunny, and there was minimal wind. Even in that weather, I didn't really work up a good sweat. My HR barely made it out of zone 1.
Qualitatively, the limiting factor seemed to be more the Achilles than the probably ankle sprain; but that may have just been because I have an ankle support that addresses the sprain more than it does the Achilles. I'm not terribly impressed with a half mile, but that's more than I could run yesterday. I think I'll be able to run a mile by Friday; racing a mile seems dubious. But no firm decision on Michigan Mile yet. It may come down to a running test on Thursday morning.
Obviously, I'll miss my nominal mileage goal this month. Training toward a marathon has been interrupted; the best I can hope for now is to be healthy enough to complete it. And a sub-6 mile on August 25 does not seem possible at this point. Oh, well. I met my goals for the other two races this month, though 20-20 hindsight says I should have taken a DNS at Bergen.

I survived! I'm pretty happy with my time, 38:36 for a first 5K when I've only been running since the end of May. I was expecting to be somewhere in the 40-45 minute range so it was a nice surprise. I didn't manage to run the whole thing because I started off waaaaay too fast. I ran until I got to the signs for the turnaround, then walked through that, and run/walked my way to the finish line with a fair bit more running than walking. So overall I'm very happy with how it went and have some ideas for how I will do things next time.

Life got in the way of yesterdays run and heat and humidity cut today's run a bit short. It was 73 degree at 6:30am and humidity seemed high, didn't catch the actual number but at that time of day it's typically 80-85%, and it felt like it today. As soon as the sun started to peak out it really steamed up. I planned on getting to 9-10 today but when i got back to the house at 7 to get water the HR was above what I'd like it to be and going out for another 3 would make recovery longer. Even though i didn't get my weekly mileage goal i can't complain. My legs had plenty left in them today to keep going but common sense won today. My weekly average pace was down another 6 seconds a mile with HR edging up slightly due to today's run and just generally a hotter week this week than last. It looks like the first part of next week will continue to be 70+ in the morning but mid to low 60's will return for the back half.4 -
@sarahthes we were at the same race, small world! Congrats on your 5K, Edmonton was a nice course!
@wishiwasarunner thanks, just really frustrated at this point that none of my races this year were close to what I know I can do from training. On the positive side my knees stayed in the whole race.6 -
Great job on your 5k @sarahthes! That's a good time if you were walking part of it! Starting too fast is definitely a problem I've had too, and a lot of people, and knowing that will help your future races. Congrats!!!
Posted too soon - wanted to also say I'm sorry your race did not go the way you wanted it to @JessicaMcB! I'm so impressed with your time despite GI problems, but I really wish you could have the race you trained for.3 -
@wishiwasarunner why oh why has MFP never given us a huge dislike button????3
-
6 miles this morning. I have realised that my long runs almost always include hard hills so could never be called 'easy'
Also, my tomtom told me this after:
MFP would spout kittens if I reported what I said in response.8 -
@wishiwasarunner wow, you take care and follow the doc's orders on that! I do hope you still get your vacation. Be smart tho!
@girlinahat OMG! Dang TomTom! What the heck??? Kitten all you want!1 -

Small world! Sorry you didn't get the finish you wanted though.0 -
@sarahthes awesome first race! Congrats! Starting out too fast, especially when it's your first race, is sooo easy to do, lol.
@girlinahat dang, that is one sassy TomTom. I'd be kitten-ing back at it too, lol. Hell, I yell at my Garmin when it tells me to move later on in a day after a long run!
@wishiwasarunner Ugh! Hope you recover and feel better soon! That sounds painful!
@Orphia yay for almost first marathon time! I'm so excited for you, you're gonna rock it!
@JessicaMcB I'm so sorry your race didn't go as you had hoped it would. Stupid GI issues! But yay for non-dislocated knees!
@MobyCarp happy to see that at least some progress is being made! Hopefully you are fully recovered soon!
Omg, I'm sure I've missed some people to respond to, so general good job/feel better/you rock comments for everyone!2 -

So, Friday was supposed to be 9 miles, but there were thunderstorms threatening. Started out in a drizzle, ended up downpouring on me for a bit, then back to regular rain. When I saw lightning I decided I was already close to home so it was probably wisest to cut it short.
Yesterday was just a recovery run after my intense Zumba class.
Today was my 2nd ever time running 18 miles. It felt hotter than last Sunday, and I felt like I was really feeling the heat today, so I was feeling kinda bummed because I felt like I def was not going to do as well as last Sunday's 18 miles. Ended up surprising myself. I managed the exact same overall average pace as last Sunday, but with an additional ~150ft elevation gain, an all-time PR on a particular hill on my route, and slightly warmer conditions. So, I will take that as a win! I definitely took in more fluids this time though, so I was feeling the heat, or maybe I wasn't quite as hydrated when I started out. Last week I had .5 liters left out of 2 when I got back to my car, today I had killed the entire 2 liters by the time I hit my car.5 -
@amymoreorless , @kgirlhart , @katharmonic , @Elise4270 , @girlinahat and @KatieJane83 Thanks for the well wishes and sympathetic ear. I should take my calf and thigh measurements now from each leg to add to the chart. That would really make things interesting since my left calf is about 6 cm larger than the right one now, lol2

Congrats on your first race! I think universally EVERYONE starts off to fast in their first few races. Takes a while to learn how to pace yourself - especially since the excitement and crowds make you want to run faster.
