Low calorie/cardio vs keto/weights

Hi everyone, so when I was younger low cal & cardio ( 1hr 4-5x per week), allowed me to lose weight fairly quickly. Well fast forward 20 years, low cal & cardio didn't work ( quickly enough for me to feel it was worth the stress if it). So a co-worker, a Physical thearpist, suggested I try keto and weight lifting instead. Boom! The weight started coming off fairly quickly.
Is this because I'm old or my metabolism is changed ?
I would love to hear the experience of other

Weight loss comes from a calorie deficit. You will always drop some water weight when you start low carb.9

I did low cal/ cardio for 2 months without a lot of progress , now I'm 5 months in and 50lbs down from keto6

I understand water weight but I really don't get why my 1500 low cal vs 1500 keto progress

Regardless of the food choices and macro balance you choose, it's a calorie deficit that causes weight loss.
When you describe low cal/cardio - how low cal? Were you logging? Using a food scale? How did you estimate calorie burn from cardio? Did you eat those cals back? How long did you use this approach?
You mentioned that it wasn't working quickly enough... what is your expectation? Is it a reasonable one? How much weight are you trying to lose?7 -

Weight training doesnt burn much calories. More likely, you are more accurate on this diet than the other diet. It doesn't seem like the other diet was sustainable for you, which could have led to inaccuracies in tracking and compliance issues.7 -
I am just reading Fat For Fuel, by Dr. Mercola and he fully explains the science behind why keto works. Great book! I actually borrowed it from my library via ebook download onto my phone.17

I've experienced the same thing. I train hard with weights 3-4 times a week on keto and I've not only dropped weight faster than ever in my life, I also don't have inflammation anymore. I do light cardio like walking my dogs or biking with my wife but nothing like steady state cardio on machines. Keep up the great work!25 -

If you lost weight, it was via a caloric deficit, by whatever means you created it. Congratulations on the weight loss.8 -

Who's anti keto? The science is very clear, if you control for calories and protein there is no difference. What is more important is dietary adherence.
I generally eat high carb and higher protein and all my numbers are outstanding. Also, since inflammation is the new buzz word, it should noted that weight training causes inflammation. Inflammation isnt a problem, chronic inflammation is. And that is generally cause by obesity.15 -

It's not a "narrative. It's reality. Many fad diet proponents try to downplay CICO because they feel it distracts from the dogma of their fad of choice. Others even outright deny it. But none of these rhetorical gymnastics changes said reality.
As an individual that toiled for months at the onset of my journey with these fad diets, I understand fully the cult personality around many of them. However, one thing I can report to folks new to this is that once they accept CICO the easier their journey (and life in general) will become.8 -

Possibly as you are older you aren't able to put the same effort into the cardio you did when you were younger. Or your tastes have changed and the low-cal diet you did didn't psychologically satisfy you now the way it did then.
It's really hard to say for sure though, since you are dealing with multiple variables and personal recollection. I mean, maybe keto was the key for you and it would have worked even if you stuck with cardio. Or maybe the cardio took too much out of you and staying with the same diet but working in some weightlifting would have done the trick. The important thing is you found what works for you - congrats!4 -

I didn't call anyone out. They felt the burning desire to attempt to correct someone on MFP...again. THEY gave their speeches about something not even remotely close to what OP asked. I answered the question.12 -
Sounds like you found the diet that works best for you... right now.
Keto can work really well for some. It often reduces appetite, stabilizes energy, reduces cravings, and improves health - especially if there is insulin resistance to consider. LCHF has been found to work slightly better for those with metabolic syndrome/IR. It is not a huge difference - averages out to about 6 lbs in a year - but it is there for some of us.
For those without metabolic syndrome/IR they lose just as well on a higher carb diet.
I'm one who experienced a situation like yours. During the 90's and early 00's, I was low fat and higher carb, and ran half marathons on the weekends ... and steadily gained weight. Faster when I had to cut back on exercise. Losing weight was a struggle and slow.
Now I am in my 40's and can't do a lot of exercise due to injuries and arthritis, but doing keto I could lose weight fairly easily. I set my macros to lose about 1-1.5 lbs per week at just over 1400 kcals. I ate 1500 and lost 2-3 lbs per week. I maintain at about 2000 kcal a week, unless I go higher carb for a while, at which time I gain.
Keto really works well for some.
ETA Weight lifting often results in some water gain and a slowing of the scale for a while. In my n=1, I was lifting quite heavy for a few months then had to stop all activity due to an injury. Within 2 weeks of stopping activity I lost 10 lbs. All I could guess was water weight.7 -

<shrug> I feel like she got a lot of other's experience and insights. And she hasn't complained about the responses she got. Luckily, it doesn't matter because she is having success and was just looking for more info, I'm sure she'll be fine one way or the other.6
