Pleasantly shocked: I lost 16.6kg (36.5 pounds) in my first week on keto diet

For any new people who happen to discover this thread, let me show you why the scale can be a poor indicator of success. First consider this: http://www.healthdiscovery.net/articles/scale_lies.htm
Then consider the scale itself. Here's a picture of a pretty recognizable figure holding some old school style scales:
The way these scales work is they start off balanced with nothing in the bowls. Then you place a known weight on one end, and what you're wanting to weigh on the other, then add or subtract known weight until the scales are balanced again. If the bowls are out of balance before putting anything into either one, then it's going to give you a misrepresentation of the final weight. Pretty much every common bathroom scale works on the same principle. There is a weak spot in my bathroom floor. If I move the scale to it and weigh myself, then move it just a few inches in either direction, the final number can vary as much as 15-20 pounds.
In order for a bathroom scale to give you any kind of usable data, you need to:
1. Keep it in the exact same spot every time you weigh.
2. Recreate the conditions (time of day, same amount of clothing, anything eaten or drunk before weighing.) as closely as possible each time.
3. Measure over a longer period of time and average your weights to account for variations.
There are others I'm sure, but keeping these three in mind can be incredibly helpful. Also, beware fantastic claims. There's a reason they sound too good to be true. They are.
**ETA" 4. Even with the above conditions, consider taking it with a grain of salt, and go by body fat measurements.*
*Also learn about the different methods and pros/cons of using different body fat measurement devices.3 -
I'm struggling to see why you think a 2-3 hour nap every day is something normal to celebrate. Unless you're a 1 year old, of course.12

What body part did you chop off?8

Something is totally off here and I am guessing your original weight was off for some reason.
I'm 5'1" and started at 257. I lost the majority of my weight using keto (127 lbs). The first week I lost 9 pounds. More than 35 pounds in a week is probably impossible.2 -
Let's do some maths then:
1 kg of fat contains the energetic equivalent of ~ 7,500 kcal
Which means to lose 1 kg of fat per day you'd have to consume 7,500 kcal less than your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure).
Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate (The number of calories your body burns at rest, with zero activity)) Is assumed with 2,500 kcal.
You state you ate ~ 1,400 kcal per day
2,500 - 1,400 = 1,100
7,500 - 1,100 = 6,400
Lucky you are: 6,400 kcal is quite exactly what you burn if you are doing a marathon
So, when eating 1,400 kcal and run a marathon every day you will:
a) lose 1kg fat per day
b) die a most horrible death
c) all of the above
For you this means: A double-Marathon per day would be required to come close to the weight-loss rate you claim to have.
I'd suggest to get a new scale.

Big long post with lots of sharing of ideas, some interesting. A couple caught my attention:
Secret boards on pinterest for hot clothes. Heck ya! Stealing that idea!
Lymphatic massage. This is actually healthy and there are professionals who get paid to do it for you (but you can learn how yourself). Good reminder to learn how.
Cold wash at the end of hot shower. Sounds fun? (Actually it does because it's been high 90's-100 in my neck of the woods). I think this may have some health benefits because the Scandinavians do it, right? Hot sauna, then jump in the icy lake.
Best idea OP posted - get up and get dressed in workout clothes, have herbal tea, write positive thoughts in journal and go for a walk.
Regardless of the actual weight loss, OP is making a lifestyle change and seeing positive benefits. Just wanted to give her some props! Keep going, but if you continue to see such a huge weight loss in a short amount of time that might warrant a doctor visit.11 -

why the *kitten* almost every one is calculating the amount of fat?
15-20 lbs is not unusual in the first week and its no secret!
all together: you simply dont know how it works, so therefore - even if it is not true - ashame yourself by telling to buy a new cell...15 -

36.5 isn't 15-20 btw. If you think 36.5 is normal than I think we are not the ones who don't know how weight loss works.8 -
15-20 in one week, even the first week, is QUITE unusual. 5-10 in the first two weeks is something that happens frequently as the water weight is shed, but not more than that (barring VLCD, possibly).2

Laut auflachen!

Over/under on percentage of OP that actually happened?
I'm gonna go with... 5%.5 -
There MUST be a typo.0

But rest assured when staying 7,500 below your TDEE the loss will not be limited to fat.15-20 lbs is not unusual in the first week and its no secret!
Sadly we are not talking about ~ 20 lbs, but about ~ 37 lbs, which, at least in the reality-system I was born and raised in, only is possible with surgery. If you are not a blue whale, that is.all together: you simply dont know how it works, so therefore - even if it is not true - ashame yourself by telling to buy a new cell...
And trust me, if I catch someone trying to sell me an outright lie, suggesting to get a new scale is among the mildest options I have. And if only because it leaves a small chance that the OP actually believes what was written.

I've been eating Keto for 3 years now and have done a lot of research over that time. Headaches are normal as your body learns to burn stored fat instead of eaten carbs and your electrolytes need to be evened out (usually an indication to me that I need more salt).
Although I have NEVER heard of someone losing that much weight in one week (unless they were dead....) and your magical one week is HIGHLY unsustainable, I wish you well on your journey. Hopefully this is your miracle way of life.1 -
I think the answer is obvious; there's a magical weight loss Leprechaun that accompanies her on her morning walks who consumes her "water weight" and Chinese pixies that add special supplements to her daily herbal tea. The Leprechaun escaped from the guys who run all the "Trainers hate him" sites, and the pixies used to work for Extenze.4

I had headaches the first 3 or 4 days. But healing reactions are common. Traditional Chinese medicin teaches them. When people begin to heal they have sick type of symptoms as the toxins release. It's not a bad thing and it's not permanent.
I did not try to "understand" anything that you did not write yourself.
As previously ask: What toxins? And also, you conveniently ignored that I referred to headaches AND sleeping 2-3 hours. 2-3 hours are not a "healthy midday nap". It is a sign of an exhausted body.
You don't understand that I have been through this myself, eating way too little and ignoring the early signs. Going through an intermediate phase of being fine and then... crashing. Not as badly as I could have, but badly enough to wake me up. And I was not even on half of the deficit that you must have.akagoldengirl wrote: »I'm definitely not malnourished.. I feel better than I have in years.akagoldengirl wrote: »But in this case it all makes sense and feels right. I was over DOUBLE my ideal body weight. Your body really wants to release that fat, so it comes of quick.

Can you clarify the part about the shoes? I think I have been doing it all wrong this whole time... see I wear my shoes when I make tea/coffee, but then I take them off to go up and down the stairs. Oh man, thank goodness I saw this thread just in time!2

My money's on pishtaco https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pishtaco
In all seriousness, that rate of weight loss is questionable, at best, and certainly not sustainable. I hope you're prepared for the long haul.0 -
I believe that you probably lost a great amount of weight, but 36 pounds in a week seems like WAY too much unless you were miscalculating what you ate, and subsequently ended up under eating..0

Interesting, even complete fasting, wouldn't result in a 36.5 lbs loss in week.1 -

This is the only explanation!
In spite of the fact that I have been accused of *being* a pishtaco, I am not totally clear on how it works...pretty sure you don't come out of it alive though!0 -
