I cannot seem to give up Soda, where do I even begin?

Its been almost six months now I have soda almost everyday (Pepsi, Fanta, Sprite etc...) sometimes as much as 3 glasses a day.
I feel this is doing some hidden internal damage to me (I am beginning to urinate a whole lot more, cannot seem to digest food properly without soda and worst of all the depression that I experience when I don't have a can for more than a day)
I do try to cleanse my body daily with having unsweetened green tea daily (If that even works) and have about 2 liters of plain water daily but I dont think that can really undo the damage caused by soda.
Bottom line, where do I even start to getting rid of such a habit?

Have you heard of soda or mineral water? You can add your own lemon into it, it just won't be sweet.... I hear sugar is bad for losing weight... So definitely one way or another, you'll be required to have sugar/soda in definite moderation.... (Albeit, rarely.)
You've got to drink something else or do something else when you get these urges to drink it...
Maybe even mix iced tea and soda water together to get what you want... But honestly the sugar in soda isn't good for you and you definitely won't see results because it'll hinder the weight loss process.10 -

I was drinking nothing but soda when I started out. It was hard to get off it. Soda can have the same addiction process as heroin. I started off switching to bottled water and I would add mio or packets of koolaid like lemonade and then slowly narrowed it down to just water. To this day I drink nothing but water.22 -
I wanted to give up soda pop completely. I used to drink diet pop - lots of it. Then I saw a documentary on aspartame, and I will never touch that stuff ever again! Sugared soda pop has glucose-fructose - this is terrible for your organs, it's not natural and your body cannot process it.
What I did was use Soda water and fruit juice. Too much fruit juice is also bad for your diet - lots of calories but doesn't make you feel full. You could try Crystal Light with soda water, at least that way you are drinking a "fizzy" drink.
Anyway, to break the habit of drinking pop, I started with lots of juice and a little soda water. Every couple of days I would increase the amount of soda water and decrease the amount of juice. After a few weeks, I was able to drop the juice completely. Then I gradually switched soda water for plain water. It's not easy but with determination, you can do it. Just like any bad habit, it takes time. Some people can stop "cold turkey" (like smoking cigarettes), others need more time.
Better to take all the time you need to finally be free of pop!16 -
Try fruit juice in sparkling water, then gradually reduce the amount of juice to get used to the less sweet flavor. I love sparkling water or club soda with just a hint of lemon now, or even plain. You still get that bubbly carbonation and it's very refreshing.
If you work it into your calories you can have a treat soda from time to time, unless it's just a major trigger food for you. (I can't do that.)
Aspartame affects people differently. I won't touch it but I don't like the taste anyway. Artificial sweeteners can cause increased sugar cravings/appetite just like sugar.8 -
I kicked soda with carbonated water. Poland spring, mostly lemon and lime. It reminded me of soda and I would try to pretend it was! Then I moved to regular water and lemon or lime. Lost all my desire for soda this way.6

I honestly believe the ingredients in soda and diet soda (my personal downfall) can have an addictive effect on some people. I find that if I drink one diet soda I want more AND for me it also makes me want to snack more. I was off sugar and artificial sweeteners for a few years and I lost weight I felt better once I went back to drinking diet soda I also began to make poor food choices and gained 20 lbs over time. I'm trying to give up soda again, I drink zero vitamin water when I want something flavored, some people like iced tea also. If you can cut down even one glass a day maybe you will be able to kick the sod habit all together.10

I haven't given up soda. I stick to diet. To counteract the morning depression have something with caffeine. That might be tea, coffee, or chocolate.5

If you told us you couldn't stop eating a dozen donuts every day what would you have us tell you?
Stop...eating...donuts...everyday!
You really need us to tell you that is not a good idea?
Aside from being devoid of nutritional value, soda pop is really bad for your teeth. The acid in it dissolves the enamel on your teeth.
Sports drinks are equally bad in this way.
You just have to get out of the habit. Just stop. Don't buy it.
If you need the lift you get from soda drink coffee or tea instead.9 -
Try kombucha. It's a fermented tea that has a soda-like fizz. It's chalk full of probiotics. A bottle of kombucha will be half the calories and adds a wealth of health benefits.6

Just drink diet. As of today, I’m 109# down and I drink diet soda everyday. ERRYDAY!14

It is a mind game......if you really want to give it, give it up in your heart. It is a battle between your heart and mind.
Stay Strong!!5 -
I was addicted in drinking diet coke, coke zero. A day may reach 1.5Litre. Now I am trying my best to stop myself from touching soda drinks, even diet soda. Those artificial sweetener aren't good for health too.
I switched to mineral water, coconut water, green tea and honey lemon.8 -
Try diet soda as a first step, will help you find out if it's the sugar or the caffeine that has the hold on you!0

I can't express this enough! Take it from me, I've always had very very healthy teeth and have always taken very good care of my teeth but I've had to have a couple fillings which aren't fun, but it was because of soda. My dentist told me that and it gave me even more of a reason to stop drinking it!2 -

To the bold: No.
OP, I second the suggestion to switch to diet soda.4 -

How did they know it was from soda and not from other acidic foods like fruits?7 -
I also am a soda addict. How I limit is by drinking only water at work (and a lot of it) and limiting my soda consumption to Coke Zero (which they changed recently, and not for the better. It's still better then Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi) at night. I also try to have no more then three glasses.

Well he assumed but I'm pretty sure it was from the soda the only thing that changed in my diet was the soda to cause it.0 -

Dopamine response also occurs when you pet puppies or stub your toe. Do you have any peer-reviewed sources that say soda is equivalent to heroin in terms of addiction pathways and physiological dependence?9 -
I have been off of Sprite for 4 months now and use to drink a lot of it. I do not like diet pop because aspartame gives me headaches. I tried this stuff called Sparkling Ice. It is so good!! Comes in many flavors, but my favorite is Black Raspberry. It really helps with the soda craving. The only thing is I try to watch how much I drink because it has Sucralose in it. I buy the little cans so I can take to dinner with me if I want a soda. Good luck.1

God damn I love it when people come in with the proper science.7 -
If this is the infografic generation, then I must fight infografic with infographic.4

You can use Coke to remove rust from metal so you don't have to go far to conclude what it does to your teeth.
My dentist is quite emphatic about the effects of soda and sports drinks on tooth enamel.
It is the citric acid in it.
Unless you are competing in extremely exhausting activities in high heat where you lose lots of fluids you don't need sports drinks.
Diet sodas are equally bad and full of chemicals. Yuck!12 -

No, this is correct. I've seen a few episodes of the show "Intervention" that dealt with soda addiction. The consequences are just devastating. Oh, those poor families.8
