I am a 5’3’’ pretty active female and my goal range is 120-125. On January 1st of this year I weighed 163 and have really buckled down to lose the weight. Every time I get to 125 I seem to go a little crazy eating particularly with the dessert. I’ll go through my entire day and stay in my calorie range and then eat an entire sleeve of Oreos. I don’t even like Oreos that much

For some reason it didn’t post the ending of my post!!
Who here has these kinds of self-sabotaging tendencies? How do you deal with them?
Also- what kind of lower calorie sweets do you eat when your craving sugar??2 -
Maybe avoid having foods that you binge on in your house. So there is no temptation. Just log it all and get back on track the next day.13

@orangegato My husband has to keep them in the house- I’ve never really wanted them but lately since they are the only sweets, that’s what I go for! Maybe I’ll have him hide them lol3

I LOVE sweets! I don't buy cookies or baked goods at all because I too would eat a whole sleeve of Oreos. Can't eat them if ya don't have them! I eat yogurt with berries, chocolate graham crackers, apples mixed with a little cinnamon sugar, Kind Bars, Halo Top ice cream-stuff like that. I do leave enough calories to have one of these little treats every night- I like having a small dessert an hour or so after dinner.2

@Jancandoit7 Thanks for the advice! I definitely need to start doing this. I think I’m just getting sick of “dieting” and need to switch it up some.1

I tend to binge like you late at night, too. Crackers or chips or cookies. I would eat fairly well during the day, but go off the rails late at night sometimes.
One thing that helped me is intermittent fasting. I can easily go until 2 or 4 pm in the afternoon before my first meal. A second meal sometime around 7 to 9 pm. No late night binges because I'm still full from that second meal.4 -
@katherinewease For sweets I like Yasso fro yo pops. They're 100 calories and have great flavors. Enlightened low cal ice cream pops or pints are ok too. I like pops better b/c mentally I can tell myself it is done, that's it, don't go for more. Harder to have self-control w/ a pint. Many people here love Halo Top, but I found the Birthday Cake Flavor inedible and I haven't tried any other flavors.0

I gotta be honest; when I'm in maintenance, I don't spaz about stuff like this. It happens and I move on. Because, maintenance. I've got the muscle mass and discipline (for a vast majority of the time) to make this sort of thing negligible.7

After I eat dinner, I immediately brush my teeth. Because I am lazy and hate brushing my teeth, chances are that I won't eat any sweets after dinner!8

I let myself have regular treats (gingerbread flavour ice cream with caramel sauce, gingerbread pieces and fudge chunk from Lidl...mmmm). I think the key is in the word 'maintenance'. You need habits you can sustain and depriving yourself of the yummy stuff doesn't seem like a habit you can keep up for very long. Enjoy your treats regularly to try and prevent binges and just try and balance it out with days of lower calorie foods or more exercise. Enjoy!4

There is a fairy tale about Baba Yaga, a cannibal witch who lives in a house made of chicken bones. When travelers come across her, there is only one way to prevent her from capturing and eating them. The witch will first ask for a favor. The traveler must then respond, "I will do anything for you, but I will not do that." The witch will continue her requests, but the traveler must always give the same answer. Here's an example from Pat McKillip's "In the Forests of Serre":
“Bring the white hen into my house, ” [Baba Yaga said], “and pluck it for me. I will boil it in a pot for supper, and you and all your company will drink a cup of broth with me around my fire.”
“I will do anything for you,” he said carefully, “but I will not do that.”
Her eyes seemed to grow larger than the lenses, and disturbingly dark. “You will not pluck my hen?”
“I will do anything for you, but I will not do that.”
“You will not bring your company into my house to drink a cup of broth with me?”
“I will do anything for you, but I will not do that,” he repeated, for the third time was the charm.
What does all this have to do with self-sabotage? Whenever I run up against the urge to go on a binge (or make another questionable decision), I externalize that urge and tell it, "I will do anything for you, but I will not do that." When I want to binge, it's usually not food I want. I want fun. Comfort. Energy. Awesomeness. I can have all those things without the belly bloat and regret I get from binging.
It doesn't always work, but it helps me. Something else I do when I feel a binge coming on is to settle somewhere--my room, the living room, the library--and tell myself I can't leave the room until the feeling passes. "I will do anything for you, but I will not do that."

My husband has a sweet tooth and likes to keep cookies around. I have him put them in the back, on a shelf I can't reach without a step stool. But last night he brought a package down on the counter and I gobbled down eight. Isn't that crazy? Oh, well, I duly recorded them and went on...6

Exactly.....I tend to look at my caloric needs in more of a weekly perspective....and not a daily perspective. So, if I overdo one day I can underdo on another day and - for the most party - balance things out.
Now, let's look at why you are doing this? Not picking on you. We have all done this. What do YOU think is the cause of this?0 -
I try to plan my evening treat much earlier in the day and log it. Then everything works around that and I can look forward to it and enjoy it guilt-free.
I also like decaf flavored coffee in the evening. My go-to is Crazy Cups Decaf Peppermint Mocha (I buy on Amazon) - it's just decaf coffee with calorie-free flavoring. I add a small amount of milk or creamer and it has such a great aroma and just enough flavor. It (a) keeps my mouth and hands busy (b) provides some of the stimulation that a dessert would (c) has become a signal that I'm all done eating for the day.3 -

You'll figure it out- we all have weak moments-just move on. I'm sick of watching everything I eat too, but I'm more sick of my fat body I made a light version of apple crisp today that looks pretty good- see I already have a dessert made for later- BUT I only made 2 servings- for me and my hubby- no seconds available.0 -
I just try to eat appropriate portions of the calorie dense stuff I like so I don't miss them and feel tempted to binge. I think part of this experience should include learning how to eat, say, 2 oreo cookies, during a normal day and workign it into your overall diet so it doesn't sabotage you OR make you feel guilty.2

Grapes, I can’t eat enough to do any real calorie damage. My stomach isn’t big enough.2

I am definitely a stress eater, which I know is terrible. I also have a tendency to have an “all or nothing” attitude- and not just with food! But when I eat I either need to be on a strict plan or it’s a complete free-for-all. I am not good with “maintenance.” I don’t know if I could just eat 2 Oreos lol @shaunshaikh

Try doing this in a house with four kids a wife a mother-in-law who all enjoy treats and do not deal with a weight issue as I do.
My two younger ones bring those packages of six Oreos to school daily. I will not lie I have stolen a package or two but regret it. I mean it is 320 kcals and six doesn't even really fix the Oreo jones. So I will come down even a couple nights ago grab a package think, look at MFP on my phone and see how that would affect my daily goal and will put them down and grab two saltines dip them in my cottage cheese and take my butt back to bed.2 -

I too am at times a stress or bored eater. What has helped me besides time is getting those individual bags of bar-b-que chips. I get my little fix and when the bag is gone it is gone otherwise I could easily eat a entire family size bag watching television and not even realize it.2 -
I think it’s learning your habits. Some people fit daily dessert in, others don’t. I learned that I cannot have daily dessert as it makes me crave more food/sweets so I will look at desserts as “treats” but I will say I eat chips daily as I can just eat a few and be satisfied. As far as overeating the treats i think everyone ends up over eating at some point or another. Log it and move on - not everyday is going to be “perfect” as thats life. I try to be more accepting of my binges and not feel guilty about it afterwards.6

Like others have said, I don't keep tempting foods in my apartment. I will overeat them if they are there. I have found more sensible alternatives (ie protein bars, snacks bars) that allow me to have sweets multiple times a day. On days I work, especially in the fall when sweets are plentiful, I really rely on prelogging and leave a couple hundred calories to play with at work.3

I too could easily eat a whole sleeve of Oreos if they were around. I am at the point where I cannot have them around because they are a binge trigger for me. I've been buying the Oreo 100 calorie packs. No they are not the same but I eat those instead.1

If you don't buy them you won't eat them.1

Slow and steady wins the race. Celebrate the small victories. Forgive yourself when you are less than perfect (I am constantly forgiving myself). You will be better....whatever that might mean. Slow and steady....1

I think the real question is, who doesn't like oreos?! Lol jk.
I would eat the whole thing of oreos so everytime I go to the store I remind myself that I lack self discipline and don't buy it. If my kids want some kind of snacks I let them pick what they want and its usually not something I'm big on .
I do get strong cravings for sweets. So i bought a bag of dove dark chocolate with almonds. About 40 calories a piece. So I'll eat one or two of those a day. Easier not to binge on dark chocolate than milk chocolate.1 -
If you don't buy it, you can't eat it. If your motivation to not eat random things is weightloss, that motivation is gone when you've lost the weight. It doesn't even matter if the random thing is something you don't like.0
