This sentence doesn't even make sense as written - "Diet soda is bad but diet soda is worse".
I expect what you meant was "Non-Diet (Sugar) Soda is bad but diet soda is worse".
It still doesn't make sense since there is nothing inherently bad about the consumption of diet soda, and especially when you consider that the OP is looking to lose weight, and subbing Diet Pepsi for her regular Pepsi which has significantly more calories, this could actually be a helpful change to achieving weight loss goals.7 -
My husband gave up Coke when he was diagnosed with diabetes. He couldn't stand the taste of diet Coke or diet Pepsi. However diet Mountain Dew doesn't taste at all bad, so we switched to that. For a while we tried diet Dr. Pepper and Fresca, which also tasted better than diet coke/pepsi.1

My family, friends and coworkers all believe the same kind of horse crap as your family does, as did I at one point, which is why I tried and failed to lose weight so many times. All I had to go on was media noise that everyone just kept parroting. Finding MyFitnessPal, learning about calories and tuning out all the noise was how I broke the cycle. I'm 34 years old, female, down to 135 lbs from 250. I weigh less than I did in high school.fighting2bfit89 wrote: »Aspartame.(Diet) Soda is bad but diet soda is worse.
Add this to the noise that needs to be tuned out. (also I'm guessing they meant to compare diet soda to regular. Not sure which was supposed to go first, but it's wrong either way.)5 -
If you need the Pepsi, then cut down the amount, drink it less often, or substitute it. Keep in mind that fructose is metabolized in the liver much like alcohol.9

For me it was regular sugared Coke. The equivalent of 5-8 12-oz cans per day. The diet stuff tastes awful to me.
When I decided to start tracking, I fit it into my logging and measuring and tried hard to cut back. It was difficult at first. Then, as I started to lose weight and get stronger, the results started to help me motivate to cut it down more.
I now drink about 4 12-ounce cans per week, if that. Some weeks a couple more, most weeks a little less, some weeks none at all.
I'm not one of those people who, when they stop, can't drink it again. It's still my favorite drink. But I've liked my results more.
If I can cut this stuff back, anyone can.0 -
Replace with diet version and cut out slowly/replace with something else. Habits can be broken, takes time and effort.0

Carbonated water is bad for teeth (not quite as bad as sugary drinks though!). Carbon dioxide is highly corrosive.3

Not sure what your source is for this, but it's just wrong.
Water is corrosive.
Carbon dioxide alone is not corrosive
Carbon dioxide in conjunction with water is corrosive, Just about as corrosive as water alone.3 -
I second the suggestions to try out the zero calorie beverages out there. Might find something you like!0

Sounds like it's time for a FAMILY MEETING. Everyone needs to be on the same page. They need to understand where you are and where you are going and why.
I used to say the same about my A&W Root Beer until I saw how much sugar/carbs was in just 1 bottle. You can't deprive yourself of everything because of a change in diet. But, you have to account for it IN your diet. I still have my root beer. I just use it now as that rare treat when I go to the movies. There are many options for drinks out there that can gradually take the place of your Pepsi drinks. You just have to experiment with them and see which ones satisfy more.1 -

People need to stop fear mongering about fructose.

I disagree. Tell the family 'thanks for your input, now kindly butt out while I live my life like the grown *kitten* adult I am.'
As far as diet drinks go, Diet A&W is one of the few I can actually stand (although I usually stick with water).4 -
Seriously? Maybe look at tea or coffee if caffeine is what you crave. I would break that addiction by goggling all the nasty affects pepsi soda has on the body. Print that off and post that on the fridge. I gave up soda for water a few years ago, doing something similar. My thing was mountain dew and it does some terrible things to the body.
Here's one from first search http://www.healthy-drinks.net/6-harmful-effects-of-drinking-coca-cola-coke-or-pepsi/8 -

LoL, the news media doesnt vet sources and we are expected to? I just gave an example there are many other sources. I am always surprised at people demanding scientific proof all the time on posts. Choose to believe or dont it doesnt hurt my feelings. This is my suggestion it worked for me, I feel much healthier for not drinking soda.
Makes you wonder if people are paid by the soda lobbyists to be members in health forums to try to debunk drinking soda is bad. Or Roundup on your vegetables, etc. I am not going to go round and round on these topics, I say my opinion maybe point a link or two to my personal research and if people choose not to believe or want to argue for absolute proof feel free. I won't participate. I am just doing what works for me, and sharing when folks ask.12 -
I am a big diet soda drinker and everything I've read says that diet soda is very bad on our bodies and weight loss. I read it triggers a hunger response in the body. I don't know. It's a real struggle to give up. I'm drinking less because focusing on drinking more water. But I'm confused whether I can continue my diet soda habit.7

You aren't reading the right sources. It can trigger hunger in some people but you should know by now if it does for you. It's zero calories so it isn't bad for weight loss1 -

You rather believe an article from an crappy source than actual scientific research? Vetting sources is a very very important skill. Actual science has shown over and over diet soda isn't bad.
Hint: if an article or blog says "research says" but doesn't cite this research it's bad. I just read that link and it is full of pseudoscience.8 -

How much pepsi are you drinking a day?
Switch to diet pepsi and drink the same amount or reduce the amount of regular pepsi you drink.
An 8 oz can of regular pepsi per day wouldn't be terrible.

Ok last post on this from me. But scientists can slant data however their big paying endorsements want them too. Graphs and such can be changed to make things look better than they are. I am not saying I don't look at scientific evidence, I surely do, but I also listen to my body and see how it responds. I believe the more natural and purer we can get to the food that God created the better we will be. Processed foods, chemically created foods not a big fan of. I definitely do eat some of those foods at times, but I try to stay away whenever possible.9 -

Articles cherry pick and slant data way more than scientists. That one you linked is particularly bad.10 -

But seriously, and I say this with all due respect as somebody who had to learn this in my own time: when you are really serious about losing the weight, you will give up Pepsi. If you're not there yet, then hey: own that. But if you're serious, then stop buying Pepsi. Order water when you go out.4 -

I saw some expensive "organic, non-GMO, grain fed beef" in our cafeteria this morning... What kind of steer isn't organic, or fed grains? People will believe the dumbest things...
Even if someone could prove that diet soda does a fraction of the things people claim it does, I'm sure the effects are still less adverse than the effects of obesity.4 -

Why?0 -
That article:1) Caffeine, Sugar and Aspartame: These products are invariably present within the sweetened soft drinks. Coca Cola and Pepsi have been under lawsuits in some of the developed countries against using Aspartame which causes several diseases. Children should be strictly restricted from consuming products with Aspartame. Furthermore, caffeine and sugar are very addictive leading to another set of diseases like diabetes and a life-long habit of inducing caffeine in the body.
Aspartame doesn't cause "several diseases". Which diseases are they referring to. Sugar doesn't cause diabetes.
2) Kidney Failures: The sweet sugar is definitely not the reason for a failing kidney but the artificial sweeteners are. Hence consuming Diet versions of Coca Cola or Pepsi have proved to produce more impairment than the sweet versions.
3) Metabolism Level Decreases: A glass of warm water can speed up you metabolic rate but may taste awful after a workout session. A can of Coke can surely be tasty but it really decreases the metabolism and helps in destroying the fat burning enzymes in no time. Thus a can of either Diet Coke or simple Coca Cola after a rigorous workout or busy day is strictly not advisable.
4) Obesity and Diabetes: Obesity was never a major problem when Coca Cola or similar products were not introduced. But with an advent of these products, a major portion of the population is turning obese which includes children and teenagers.
Obesity is the root of diseases that affect heart, lungs, and kidney. Researches have also been proving that obesity may be a cause to trigger cancer cells.
Similarly, patients with diabetes must never touch beverages like Coke or Pepsi since it increases level of sugar in blood by twofold. Non-diabetic persons should avoid these drinks in order to keep diabetes away.

Carbonated water is bad for teeth (not quite as bad as sugary drinks though!). Carbon dioxide is highly corrosive.
The acids in soda aren't great for your teeth... but they occur in many other drinks, and they make these things called tooth brushes. You should use them several times a day.
