@_nikkiwolf_ nice, always wanted a De Rosa but got a Eddy Merckx Corsa instead (and wish I still had it).
@kcjchang I didn't even know De Rosa was nice when I bought it, had't ever heard of them. I didn't know anything about bikes, and just bought the first road bike that had the right size and fit my budget. And when I came to work with it the next week, two bike-fanatic colleagues where really exiced and informed me that it was the right choice ;)

This week the poor bike didn't get outside much. Just two commutes, I was too busy running and climbing, and tomorrow I'll go hiking. But at least in the mean time I found my warm winter gloves from last year again, so now I'm prepared for the colder temperatures.

I've had a good season as regards avoiding punctures this year but that came to an end on a fast downhill woodland descent. That hateful bang-psh-psh-psh sound.
Used a tree stump as a handy bike stand to replace the tube but got absolutely filthy - really must give the bike a good clean....
So next day gave the bike a thorough clean and pumped up the tyres. Fully ten minutes later there's a bang and the new tube has popped while the bike is still up on the workshop stand.
Looks like the tyre was damaged enough so that it has to be thrown away, the hole in the new tube matched where the tyre damage is located.

Oh well - it's the most convenient puncture ever! Clean bike, on a workshop stand, on my own drive. :)

Sunday --- A half-century training ride today. It was a lovely day with clear blue skies, lots of sunshine, wind ... there's always wind ... and warm temps. Yes, believe it or not! Warm temps down here in Tasmania! It hit actually hit 24C.

The ride was one of the flattest ones we could have planned in this area, with the exception of one climb in the middle. We decided to check out a loop at the end of the out-and-back ... it started quite nice, and then around a corner ... and UP! But we definitely chose the right direction on that loop. When we got to the top, we were faced with a steep descent ... so steep I paused for a moment at the top to collect myself before I plummeted down!

And the wind ... headwinds all the way out, tailwind partway back ... and then a switch and the sea breeze came in as a headwind at the end.

My target is 100km per week. Cycling is the only exercise which I can do without severe pain, so I am endevoring to get cycle fit for the summer of 2018 when part of our summer vacation will be to cycle across France http://www.eurovelo.com/en/eurovelos/eurovelo-6/countries/france

@sijomial I wouldn't go so far as call that puncture convenient, but still much better than out on the road!
Does cleaning your bike ever help to avoid getting filthy when you have to fix something? No matter how well I take care of my chain, every time I touch it if it falls off during a ride I end up with pitch-black hands.

    @kcjchang Awesome cover pic!

@TARGET65K Cool vacation plans! I actually live in France, but not anywhere near your planned route.
Still, (since I don't know where in the world you're from and how "exotic" France is for you): if you have any cycling-in-France questions that I might help with, let me know.

Somewhat cycling related: the Strava Dashboard has a new look. So far, I don't like it at all. Super confusing! I want back the chronological order

A clean chain (and rest of bike) helps but it doesn't stay clean for long. This was a deep clean (degrease and relube) and also did the chainrings, cassette etc.

One thing that helps is to carry disposable latex gloves in your saddlebag. Wish I had some with me when I needed them - oops!

Your chain shouldn't be dropping off regularly during a ride though, a bit of adjustment required to the limit screws perhaps?

@sijomial Unfortunately, I'm 100% sure that some adjustment to the limit screws is necessary. But I'm afraid of messing it up completely instead of making things better...
A few month ago I needed a new cassette and decided to swap my crank set to a compact setup at the same time, hoping that would make riding in the mountains easier. The one thing I did not change was the dérailleur - Campagnolo write you need a longer(?) dérailleur cage with the compact chain rings, but I read in lots of bike forums that that wasn't true, the short one would work as well. I'm no longer convinced that that is entirely true. I think it's possible to make it work, but only barely. At least I didn't manage to reach a configuration where I could shift entirely smoothly.
I took the bike to a local bike shop, but when they were done with it, the chain wouldn't go on the big chainring anymore at all! Then I went to another LBS, and after they were done, I can now smoothly shift all gears - but when I want to move the chain up to the large chainring, I have to shift "four clicks up, wait for the chain to start moving, two clicks back down". I've gotten really good at it over the course of the summer, but maybe once per 50km I click back too late, and then the chain falls off.

That all depends on chain wrap. To calculate chain wrap capacity determine the difference between your largest and smallest chain ring. Then determine the difference between your largest and smallest cog. Add the differences and you have chain wrap capacity. Derailleur cage length is optimized to a maximum chain wrap capacity. One can go a few tooth beyond but with difficulties.
but when I want to move the chain up to the large chainring, I have to shift "four clicks up, wait for the chain to start moving, two clicks back down". I've gotten really good at it over the course of the summer, but maybe once per 50km I click back too late, and then the chain falls off.
Sounds like the limit is set wide as compromise for the chain wrap, mixed vintage, or the front derailleur's height is off. Any chance you are using mixed vintage, e.g. 6/7/8 front with 9/10/11 rear? If so the front cage width is too wide and you'll throw the chain. Assuming the second LBS is competent, my guess is mixed vintage.

It's mixed groups, but all 10-speed components - front and rear dérailleur are Campa Record, but it's become close to impossible to find 10-speed record parts :/ . So the cassette is Veloce (13-26), and the chainrings (34/50) are one Veloce, one Centaur - but all of these are 10-speed.
The cage has a capacity of 30. (26-13) + (50-34) = 29, so my setup *should* be okay.

I'm always watching eBay for well-conserved 10-speed Record parts, but no luck so far. I've still got my old 53/39 crank set, I might have to change back to that if the constant chain trouble annoys me too much at one point.

Check the derailleur placement and limit screw setting, http://thebiketube.com/tutorials/how-adjust-campagnolo-front-derailleurs. Properly adjusted, it should not throw the chain. Also find a better mechanic.

Started the cycling week with a 50 miler to break through the 4,000 mile barrier for the year and then a few smaller rides.
Starting to wonder whether to aim for 5,000 for the year which would be a first for me. Weather is turning though and I can't tolerate cold very well.

@_nikkiwolf_, it's probably worth checking your H limit screw and index adjustment. There are lots of resources on youtube, or I'm a fan of the parktool's guides https://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/front-derailleur-adjustment . It's disappointing that two LBS failed to fix this. Even if your partial upgrade was a contributing factor they should have been able to tell things were not quite right and advise you what needed to be done to rectify.

I always worry about tackling new maintenance jobs. What if I stuff it up and make things worse? What if I start and then realise I haven't got the right parts or tools? But when I actually bite the bullet and do it I generally find it's not as bad as I imagined and the gradual accumulation of knowledge and makes me better able to handle the next issue.

Nice work. With two months still to go a tougher target sounds like a no-brainer. If local weather makes riding unattractive where you are maybe you need compromise and split the difference. How does 4,500 feel? Would that also be a first or do you need to go bigger to break new ground?

Thanks everyone for the advice regarding the derailleur. I don't know why, it's the one bike-repair-thing I really struggle with, even after watching and reading lots of tutorials. But one of these days I will try my luck again!

At least during my ride on Saturday the chain didn't fall off. It's already getting quite cold, but at least it was still sunny. And enough wind to make it interesting

Nice brisk 33 mile ride today to finish off the month - a bit nippy for my fingers and toes (my Raynaud's kicks in at really quite mild temperatures...) but that's a great excuse for a warming post ride coffee with Bourbon. :drinker:

That's a new yearly mileage record for me as I'm a bit of a late starter to cycling seriously.

Started the cycling week with a 50 miler to break through the 4,000 mile barrier for the year and then a few smaller rides.
Starting to wonder whether to aim for 5,000 for the year which would be a first for me.
Nice work. With two months still to go a tougher target sounds like a no-brainer. If local weather makes riding unattractive where you are maybe you need compromise and split the difference. How does 4,500 feel? Would that also be a first or do you need to go bigger to break new ground?

    @mtb000mtb
5,000 does sound very attainable but I think I will just focus on enjoying my riding for the last two months of the year when I can - wet & cold both spoil my enjoyment and I know if I set a goal I just have to hit it which would condemn me to either riding outdoors when I really don't want to or the mind numbing tedium of lots of indoor miles.
Funny thing with numbers is that 5,000 feels significant but 4,500 doesn't!

Where I live (Southern England) winters are really quite benign but my stupid hands and feet switch off even at really quite mild temperatures (10c or 50f degrees).

@sijomial Congratulations on the 4000 miles!
If 5000mi is a little much, but 4500mi doesn't sound significant - how about 7500km? That's 4660miles, so in between those two numbers. And 7500 sounds good too, right?
I tried a few different gloves last winter, because my hands freeze easily. These ones are the best I found, they work really well: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00XC860II/
For the feet I have those: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BBB-Overshoes-HeavyDuty-OSS-black/dp/B00FG27CGW - and if I want to feel really warm, I pull some sandwich bags over my socks as an extra layer. Sounds really stupid, but it's great wind protection. Maybe I should look for some specialised cycling socks that do the same, but I have a feeling they will be slightly more expansive than the 50-bags-pack from the supermarket :D

    November?

It's November 2 ... not that I've done any cycling in the last couple days.

I wasn't sure if it's worth creating another thread, since there are so few posts already and the weather will get even colder for most people. But I guess it can't hurt to give it another shot

The weather here is getting warmer ... summer! :)

    And there's always indoor cycling.

This thread has been going for 2 years now, I hope it does continue.
