Diet soda

I've read on diet soda and regular soda and I wanna know your opinion. I stopped drinking soda quite a bit ago because when you drink to many normal sodas you gain weight from the excess calories. Will I gain weight drinking diet soda? How much should I limit myself too? Will I gain weight from drinking it even though it has 0 calories?

You can't gain weight with something that has zero calories.
A calorie is a unit of energy. When you consume energy in excess of what your body needs, you store that energy for later use as body fat. When you consume less energy than your body requires, you burn body fat to make up the difference...essentially your backup generator kicks on to make up for the energy deficiency. Something that provides zero energy (calories) can't make you gain weight.rickiimarieee wrote: »Really? Whether something is healthy/nutritious or not has nothing to do with calories (energy). There are any number of highly nutritious whole food items that are also calorie bombs and if eaten in excess will cause weight gain...even though they're very healthy foods to eat from a nutritional standpoint. One has nothing to do with the other.
I have a diet Fresca or diet A&W root beer pretty much everyday. Also, when you're talking about "healthy" it is really best to look at your diet on the whole as well as dosage. I would say diet soda is pretty my neutral from a "healthy" standpoint unless you're just guzzling it by the liter. It certainly doesn't cancel out all of the other awesome nutrition I have taken in during the day.14 -

Don't believe all the fear-mongering you read. Aspartame has been around a long time and it's very safe.
Diet soda is neither "healthy" nor "unhealthy". It's just a no-calorie beverage.14 -
It's an almost zero calorie drink that is almost all water with some flavouring and extremely low calorie sweetener.
You know fat is stored surplus energy and you cannot get energy from a drink that doesn't contain energy.
So try to think how it can cause fat gain?
Aspartame has been studied for many decades and passed as safe for human consumption by every food standards agency in the world.

To be absolutely clear the only thing that will ever cause you to gain weight is to intake more calories than you expend. That is literally all there is to it. The complexity comes from finding a set of foods and drinks that adds up to an amount of calories where you will lose weight while allowing you to feel sated and satisfied as well as provide adequate nutrition. Diet soda has almost zero calories and no real nutritive benefit so it's neutral when it comes to health or weight. It could give you some feeling of satisfaction if you enjoy it in which case go for it.
As for aspartame being dangerous without launching into it again I'd just suggest you be a bit skeptical about "wellness" website that speak of reasons to fear things while coating their site in ads or trying to sell you their health plan.11 -
do you want opinions or facts? you'll hear a million different opinions on here, but the facts are what others listed above - completely safe for regular consumption and does not cause fat gain.5

It can become addicting. I started and can't quit diet soda. I crave it. Sorry I ever started.
So you really like it then. Okay. How has this "addiction* negatively impacted your life? Is it possible that the addictive ingredient is the caffeine which is what people do often become habituated to and suffer headaches if they don't have?
I mean addiction wise you probably could just switch over to coffee or tea. If you don't do that because you much prefer the taste of soda then could it be less about addiction and more about habit, routine and what you prefer to drink?14 -

Diet soda: 0-10 calories

In the past I lost half my bodyweight and I drank diet soda every day. today I prefer it. Now after gaining some weight again Im on track with weight loss and still drinking it every day.1

Itd take 360 cans to hit my calories for the day.
Im going to go ahead and say even the diet drinks with a few calories wont kill my meal plan... (imagine the bathroom time though oh my)

My bathroom is only 25 steps away. Assuming a round trip of 1 cup of pee per trip thatd be 18,000 steps XD hahaha I think youd burn off alot of the calories.1 -

I add extra sodium to my diet soda to balance electrolytes. I’m a DIY kind of gal. A Martha Stewart, so to speak! She hates me.1 -
Honestly, the only thing you have to worry about is the sodium, but most of them don't have nearly as much as they used to, so unless you're drinking a TON, even that is probably a non-issue.10

There isn't just sodium in soda, there is also water. The amount of water in the soda far exceeds the amount of sodium to the point that if you drank a ton of soda you would probably be depleting your bodies overall sodium content not increasing it.
Basically if you want to increase sodium levels, eat sodium rich foods. If you want to decrease it, drink water or drink water that contains sodium at concentrations lower than that found in your blood...which soda is, by a lot.4 -
It's probably more correct to say that it's unknown if artificial sweeteners are harmful. However, the caramel color in colas known as 4-MI is considered "possibly carcinogenic to humans" by the World Health Organization.
There have been some claims that regularly consuming artificial sweeteners causes insulin resistance, which in turn could cause weight gain. In theory, artificial sweeteners have a negative affect on the micro biome, leading to increases in blood sugar levels. A 2014 Israeli study found this to be true in mice. It has not been tested on humans, so at this point, it's unknown if artificial sweeteners cause insulin resistance in humans.
One sucralose study: https://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT01128829 showed that sucralose does affect blood glucose and insulin levels. Other studies have shown that there is no affect.
More research is clearly needed, so until then, I'll drink water.22 -
If a person don't like regular water. Can they substitute with diet soda. Since it's not bad for you at all it should be as good as water?

Why do you even open these threads if they bother you so much?
So you know it all, good for you. Many posters don't. I have friends who are convinced diet coke fools your body to believe it drinks real sugar and make you fat. That is not an uncommon and unheard of opinion. Not to mention diet coke gives you cancer.
