With exercise, I would focus on finding something that you enjoy and helps you meet your fitness goals, not just burning the most amount of calories.
Plus, a workout of an hour burning an amount of calories equal to three pieces of pizza? That sounds pretty decent.11 -

Yea, that's probably about right for most exercise. I've heard that things like XC skiing and rowing are some of the biggest calorie burners on average, but ultimately exercise doesn't burn as many cals as most people would like. I don't think you'll do much better than 3 pieces of pizza for an hour's workout, regardless of what exercise you're doing.5 -
Diet is the key to weight loss. Exercise for physical and mental health.
As you found, exercise doesn't amount to much. As a distance runner, I burn more calories than the average guy. I also can gain weight while training for a marathon if I don't pay attention to my calories in.
Log your food for a couple weeks and see what is pushing you over your limit. Make minor changes to get under you limit and you will have success. Add exercise to maintain your muscle and increase your fitness.
Good luck.11 -
Depending on the pizza, that could be anywhere from 600 to well over 1,000 calories in exercise burn over 4 days....not too shabby in either scenario, in my opinion. I burn the majority of my calories running, but I don't run to burn calories....I run because I enjoy it. When I'm looking to lose and need a significant calorie deficit, I gain it by eating less.4

If you are burning enough calories to burn 3 slices of pizza, you are doing amazingly well! Pizza has a lot of calories! Remember it's about learning to have a healthy active lifestyle, be patient with yourself. Vary your exercises and do things you enjoy; walk, run, skate, cycle, weight training.4

Agree 100%.
In terms of calorie expenditure it's hard to beat running but if you're new to it you need to build time/distance gradually (most running injuries are a result of too much, too soon, too fast)
Do you have a specific fitness goal in mind?

burning the equivalent of three slices of pizza in one hour of exercise is crazy high...what kind of exercise are you doing and how much were you hoping to burn in an hour?2 -
Interesting how she puts it down as 3 slices of pizza instead of a number.
What kind of pizza and if you going to the gym the to get pizza I am afraid you got it all wrong.7 -
Rowing machine at the gym.2

Although it's very common, I really suggest not working out just for a calorie burn. Work out for the physical adaptation and improvements. This mindset shift can reduce a lot of frustration and negative connotations with working out. I ate "X" food so now I have to burn it off or if I burn "Y" calories then I can have "insert treat".5

I remember running seven miles to hear in my headphones that I had burned 1000 calories. Later at lunch I was at McDonald's and saw that a Big Mac as a combo was approaching 1500 calories. I don't go there anymore.7

Running and elliptical work usually get me like 300-500 calories burned. And that's only the MFP estimate. Try weight lifting. Less of a burn while working out but it continuously burns calories more so throughout the day than cardio would.2 -

If you stay in Mazama WA, there are hotels with groomed XC ski trails leading to the front door. You can ski about 15 miles (3 hours if you're very fast) to get pizza, then back to your hotel. All the slices you want!2 -

I burn160-165 cals rowing for 14-15 min at a moderate rate. Do it twice and that's 320-330 cals in just 30 mins; 40-45 mins if I take a break in between.
A flat 1hr walk on the treadmill at a slow 2.4mi/hr burns only 200 cals.
On the other hand, it takes me 1 hr 48 mins to burn 377 cals by hiking 4.22 miles.on flat ground. Add a 1k elevation to the hike and the cal burn estimate goes up to 798 cals. Add another hr to drive to/from the hiking location and it takes about 3 hrs total.
The hike is more time consuming but more enjoyable. Rowing is more efficient. The treadmill is the least efficient and most boring.1 -

I love hiking early in the morning when it’s nice and cool out. I can burn anywhere from 300-800 calories in approximately 1-3 hours depending on the incline, and how hard I push.0 -
Different types of exercise will raise your metabolic rate longer after you feel finish exercising, so that you continue to burn more calories long after your finished. Look into high intensity interval training (HIIT), probably the best calorie burner overall.9

Running a half marathon is good!2 -
Climbing stairs for an hour could give you about 530 calories
Cycling briskly (outside or in a spinning class) for an hour might do the same.
Hiking might be in that same ball park.
Running might give you a little bit more.2 -
I mix it up every single day, I do something different, and it is always outside no matter what the weather, rain, snow, minus 30!, bike, walk, swim, kangoo jumps. stand up paddle board, roller blade, ski, snowshoe. on and on and on, I love to try new things and easily burn over 1000 calories a day, 7 days a week.0

Im afraid tht there is no snow in my country for skiing0 -
Stand Up Paddleboarding is a great way to burn calories! I wear a heart rate monitor and I can easily burn 1000+ calories in 2 hours. Its a total body workout.1

Exactly this...
however I know skipping for 10mins burns a good amount of calories...but hard as heck....and I am not in bad shape.
The other thing that I tried lately was shooting hoops with the hubby...sort of a game. 8mins you shoot and get your own rebound and then go back to the foul line/3 point line and start again and whomever gets the most baskets in 8-10mins wins...it was tough...not sure what it burned but was fun too.1 -

Really? You're sure you're burning 900 calories in one hour? While I sometimes burn that many in an hour of riding a bicycle, it isn't a regular occurrence.1 -
MostlyWater wrote: »Spin class
Even that's not going to give you the 900 calories in three slices of pizza. It's a good calorie burn, but unless you're 300+ pounds, it's not *that* good.
I'm basing this, of course, off of my 125ish self burning 300 calories or so in 50 minutes of spin. That's not even *one* slice of pizza, if we're using that as a metric.4 -
I love (i.e. hate) the things that people decide to latch onto...
Not all pizza is 300 cals per slice... could be more, could be less. Regardless, how is pizza calories helpful to the OP regarding her exercise options/recommendations?
MFP, where people will go to any extent to prove someone else wrong.6 -
I feel that walking/hiking gives me the best burn, because I can sustain it for longer periods of time.
I do CrossFit three days a week, which includes a warm up, lift portion, and workout. The workout is usually around 15 minutes and the whole thing takes about an hour. That usually only burns around 300 - 400 calories, even though I leave feeling like my *kitten* was kicked. Meanwhile, I walk 3 miles a few days a week and usually burn around 700+ calories in the same timeframe and it feels pretty easy. (I'm ~295lbs, so my calorie burns are higher than most people's.)1 -

How much do you burn during and after your workout? Actual numbers please (not bro-science). Thanks.0 -
@dewd2 yeah that's so true. I do watch my calories intake too. I was just giving a resemblance with food burn with exercise tht i do. thank you
@mgalsf12 Awww thank you. I'll find work put tht i enjoy someday
@BrianSharpe Yea i do have my goals in mind. Before this i do use to running for an hour but only using treadmill. Will tht can cause injuries too?. Thanks btw1 -
@MotherOfSharpei Oh yeah. Im a quite busy person actually. I cant do too much outdoor. I can only limit one hour per day in my home gym. Honestly tho, i hate being in there. I do love outdoor one. thanks btw0
