My boyfriend was drinking far too much soft drink (soda) he switched to soda water and he dropped 4kgs just by doing this in the space of 3 weeks. Stop buying, maybe try a flavoured water?1

I cut down to drinking one can a day then switched to diet. Now I usually have two a day (one in the morning when I get to work, one with dinner) and if I go out to eat.0
-
Switched to coffee4

Me personally.... I just started forcing myself to drink water. At first I didnt like it. Now, I almost crave it. I have slipped up and drank my favorite soda. I realized I usually can't have just one soda, so I try to avoid it.2

I was already drinking diet soda for the most part when I had soda. Didn't change anything with respect to my soda consumption. Ate below maintenance. Lost weight.3
-
I've drank water so long now that I really don't enjoy the after-taste of sugary drinks.3

are you worried about the calories in soda or caffeine as your title says?3 -
It's a habit like anything else.

I got a mug for water, keeping it close by and accessible. I told myself I could have a soda after I drank so much water (64 oz). Turned out I didn’t really want the soda after that, and just continued to drink water. Remember, soda has many bad qualities, not just the sugar content. Also, the first week or so is hell, but once you get through that it’s much easier.2
-
I would cut one can a day out per week, so 3 this week, 2 the next, etc. I quit drinking caffeine cold turkey and was left with the worse headache of my life for 3 days!1
-
Switched to caffeine pills and water.1

Perhaps the best natural substitute for diet soda is tea.
Hot in cold times and cold in hot times. You can sweeten artificially or naturally. You can mix with juice. You can make it strong or weak. You can put milk in it, which makes it easier on the stomach. There are lots of varieties to taste.
I've nearly completely transitioned to it and rarely drink soda these days. In the summer, I recover from a long bike ride by drinking a sweetened ice tea latte with lots of 1% milk. YUM!2 -
I didn't cut out diet soda but I tended to drink more coffee while trying to lose. And more water or flavored water.
I take a lot of bathroom breaks now...0 -
I quit drinking Coke cold turkey. It was not easy. I didn't drink more than a can, maybe two a day, but my parents allowed me to drink as much soda as I wanted as a kid. It was as normal to me and drinking water. I never thought much about soda until I was in my 30s and realized not everyone drank it all the time! I was fat and miserable and knew that I needed to lose weight. It just felt like it was the right time to give it up. The first two weeks were awful. Migraines, intense cravings, exhaustion (it was my only source of caffeine). I white knuckled my way through it. It's been 4 months and I don't miss it at all! I drank lots of water and tea and started drinking coffee to boost my energy. Good luck!0

I use to drink 4-6 cans of Coke plus 2-3 cans of Bud a day because I stocked them in my frig. Stopped buying & drinking the sodas and beer at home twice and lost weight quickly each time because they accounted for most of my excess cals. Made the mistake of starting up the habit again once but won't do it again.
The only way to stop is to just quit and tell yourself "no" when you think about drinking a soda again.
In my case, it was both saying no to drinking any soda again and stopping buying and stocking my frig w/them. Haven't had a drink of soda out of a can or in any other form since.
I do allow myself a draft beer or 2 in one sitting once every week or two, if I have enough cals to allow, it BUT I do not stock or drink any canned beer at home anymore. This forces me to only drink beer when I'm only at a restaurant, pub or bar, which is a very infrequent occurrence for me.
I stopped eating some other things too but eliminating canned sodas and beer made the biggest impact for me.

First off, the worst part of soda is the high fructose corn syrup, not the caffeine.
And diet sodas are even worse with the artificial sweeteners like sucralose(splenda) and aspartame(equal).
Caffeine pills and water are not a bad idea, or gatorade for electrolytes.
Tea is a great idea for substitution and one i'm trying to work towards myself, but I really enjoy my coffee buzz so its been hard to give up. I'm down to just one cup a day in the morning..
On the subject of coffee, I have a decent grind & brew automatic drip coffee maker, I make a whole pot every time, jar it while hot in one or two glass jars and store it in the fridge . Ideally i would have several serving sized glass jars so each would be vacuum sealed until opened for consumption for perfect preservation of flavor (oxygen is the enemy in flavor preservation from the moment of bean grind to consumption).
The coffee, while cold from the fridge, is very mild and not bitter at all so I often don't sweeten it at all, nor use any kind of creamer so it's about the healthiest way to consume it.
Highly recommended.11 -

In regards to diet soda it’s fine. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary5 -
LOVE me some diet ginger ale. super low sodium, no calories, no sugar. Helped me transition into seltzer as I never particularly liked seltzer until very recently.0

Nice. I never got why people get so worked up over aspartame. I spent lots of time in the 90's looking for actual papers on the dangers of sucralose and aspartame but only found positive reports. It's very true how pseudo-science will become gospel with fringe substances that have only anecdotal evidence for it's harm. But things that millions of people die from every year that are directly linked to bad diet and lack of exercise people will fluff off like it's no big deal.
Black coffee and water is what I drink. But sometimes I'll buy some diet soda, the way to stop is stop buying it.
Soda with sugar is for children or a cheat meal. A liquid sugar delivery system is kind of crazy, it's not even that good, when it's time to cheat I can't waste my sugar calories on soda. Cuz soda??!?? How about cheesecake!
Also if aspartame did cause cancer the rates of the cancer the rats got would have shown an increase since the 1970's. A dramatic increase.6 -

Agree. If aspartame caused cancer I'd be dead. I've been drinking diet soda since the 70's.4 -

go ahead and believe whatever you like. Its certainly not a neurotoxin with a well documented history of causing problems in a lot of people, that took 6 tries and a lot of pressure to push through the FDA approval or anything...11 -

You're right. It's not.6 -
Researchers have been trying unsuccessfully for decades to prove aspartame will kill you - by this point, if anything has been proven safe for human consumption, it's aspartame.5

For your head's sake, I would stop slowly. Cut out two cans per day for a week, then one more can, etc. And replace with sparkling water!! I drink mine plain with no flavor but there are tooonnnnsss of flavor options, all low or no cal.1
