I'm not going to meet my New Year's goal, and that's okay

Well, we've got 13 days left and it's not looking likely I'm afraid, but that's okay! I needed to hit 164 to be considered overweight and my most recent low is 168.2. I suppose a whoosh is possible, but I'm not holding my breath. So what I'm doing instead of feeling bad about that is celebrating what I did accomplish this year.
Since I started losing weight in January, I've lost 40 pounds, almost 20% of my starting body-weight of 208 lbs. I've gone from size 18 jeans to size 14. I've lost at least three pounds every month since June, and feel pretty good about keeping that up next year (excepting a planned diet break for my birthday in March, which is going to involve So. Much. Sushi.).
I started running and actually enjoy it! I started body-weight exercises and enjoy that too! I've graduated from wall push-ups to stair push-ups, and can do both squats and lunges without support to keep my balance. I own three pairs of shoes for different kinds of exercise! And I've really enjoyed becoming a part of this community so that I don't have to bore my friends and family with constant weight and fitness talk.
Happy early New Year, everybody! Even if you haven't hit a goal or two, I bet you've done something worth celebrating.
@MegaMooseEsq, your attitude with everything is inspiring. If you're accepting more friends, I would love to have your positivity along my journey!1 -

This year I confirmed for myself that setting a time limit on a weight goal will backfire. Even if I make a mini-goal, I get so very overwrought about will-I-get-there-on-time that it's not worth the angst.
What I really wanted for this year was to get off metformin. My most recent bloodwork was very good and my dosage has been cut in half; if the next couple of weeks are as good as the past couple of weeks, I'll be off the metformin completely! I'm so grateful I can't say it enough!
I have about 45 lbs to go before I take time to pause and review my progress, and maybe recalibrate my long-term map. I never thought about being in this position; I just fantasized about Being At Goal. That just might have had something to do with why previous big weight losses didn't stick.
Anyway, yay to you, MegaMooseEsq, and blessings on you and your good work! And thanks for the occasion to stop and take a thoughtful look.5 -
MegaMoose, you're one of my favorites on here. You've done an amazing job this year!!3

I learned over the last couple years that putting a time limit on my goals were actually detrimental to my motivation. I'd get to the prescribed time and, in frustration that I hadn't reached some arbitrary weight, would stop tracking all together. I'd often start binging, and start gaining weight. I never got as high as my highest 5years ago at 240, but it was disheartening.
I was at 220 on New Years 2017, and told myself I just had to log on every day this year, and weigh less than I did at the end of the year.
I dropped down to 200 by April, and ever since then my heart just hasn't been in losing any more. I definitely need to (I was near the cusp from Obese to Overweight at 5'-7") , but I was feeling blah. So, I told myself I didn't have to yet. Just finish out the year with my original goal.
So, I've been practicing maintenance for several months now. Not fully logging, but trying to stay under 200. Keeping up with my exercises, walking, daily life, and I never restricted myself from any food.
As of today, I'm at 194.8. I've been lower (190.6 in Oct) and higher (even last weekend I was up to 199.6 with TOM and movie popcorn!) but I've never broken above 200.
This has been one of the happiest years ever. I'm a healthy 36 and have completed several 5Ks this year. I found I prefer active vacations, and have gone on long hikes in many environments. My log in streak is at 619. I don't log everything all the time, but I know now how to regulate my weight over a longer period of time. I have a much more positive and flexible outlook on day-to-day happenings.
I'll be getting back to active weight loss after the holidays which for me requires complete and accurate logging, but I'm not setting a goal. That's not me, and I know that now. If I need to take a break from the logging I will.
My only resolutions this year is to weigh less on Dec 31st 2018 than I do on Jan 1st 2018, log on to MFP every day (even if I don't fully log food consumption), and to be honest with myself.
Thanks for sharing your story!11 -

MegaMoose - great attitude, you'll get there! Taking the deadline off my weightloss was one of the factors that finally helped me reach goal and maintain it.
Rickster1967 - your quote below on goal setting is fantastic! Thanks for sharing.Rickster1967 wrote: »The way I look at goals is:
all arbitary or intermediate goals are moveable
For example, I've set a goal to drop 50lb by 1st April from a certain date a little while ago. If I get to 30 March and I've only lost 30lbs I won't be beating myself up. I'll just set a new goal.
My ultimate target is to drop 73lb from current weight. I'll get there. Goal setting is an important tool in helping to stay on track not a stick to beat myself with

Hugs to you!5 -
Wow, wow, and WOW. What a great post. Thanks for putting hard work and determination out there. You worked so hard, and you accomplished so much. It goes to show that the number can be kind of arbitrary. You did what you set out to accomplish, and more! Keep it up! Here's to a new year and a successful job hunt!1

I put this in a group I'm in, partly because I was reading this before
I was being a little reflective as I'm heading into my third year of this... I've not met my 1lb a week goal, and that is ok.
I've just been reversing the winter creep pattern. I lose quite happily (albeit slowly) Jan - Sep, but come October I just maintain, I find it much harder to stick to a deficit... but at least I'm not gaining.
I think this was mostly how I got fat in the first place, eating a bit too much come winter time, and then maintaining that.

After my initial whoosh in January, I maintained for a good couple of months before I got a hang of accurate logging and how to manage my deficit. I figure that maintaining is absolutely a win after years of gaining, and I think starting with and keeping up that attitude has made it easier to stick to a deficit for so long - I knew that even if I messed up and didn't lose, I'd still be doing better than I had been.3 -

WELL DONE! I think you are orbiting the moon and almost there .

I have a goal to reach 155 late next spring/early summer. I'm 177 now (started at 188). I made mini goals...lost 10 lbs by the end of the year, another 10 by St. Patrick's Day, and goal after that.
Right now I am 9 lbs down! I've still got a little time to lose the last pound but I won't be upset if I don't hit it. I'm still 9 lbs closer than I was!5 -
Dang. 40 lbs. Sweet. Great post!0

Love this thread! Congrats on your progress 40lbs is a hugh accomplishment.
I won't hit my goal either but if I can at least get below 180 I'll be happy as heck. I've lost 10% of my starting weight which is huge for me and I'll rocking in the New Year weighing less than I did last January 1st.
Be proud of yourself for all you've done, I know I am.2 -

My first couple of weeks I just tracked what I ate with no restrictions, and still lost several pounds. I think I've eaten over maintenance a handful of times, but on reflection I doubt it was that uncommon when I was still gaining.3 -
I appreciate this post so much! It feels so good to see other people in a similar situation who have such a good attitude. Losing weight can be such a mind game sometimes! Even when you think you know better and are usually happy with the loss you've had it's easy to be hard on yourself sometimes. I try not to set time goals for myself on weight loss, but when the trending app is showing that you should be into the overweight category by the end of the year and you don't make it (by like 30 pounds due to a pretty bad illness for several months that had you staying over night at Mayo...) it can be disheartening. Anyway, this came at the right time and I really appreciate it. Happy Holidays and New Year!!3

Love this thread, felt like it needed a bump, especially this close to Christmas and felt like sharing. Hope it helps.
I'm disabled and needed to lose weight, especially as it was causing other problems with my health. Not being able to exercise in the general sense I knew I couldn't "work out". Had tried a few times to lose weight, was sometimes a little successful, but life would get in my way and I always regained.
Then 3.5 years ago, I discovered MFP and haven't looked back since. Its not always been easy and I did have a break in the middle. Since 9/4/16 I have logged everything, no matter what, every day since & have an unbroken streak of 624 days!
At the start I was 14st 3lb and set several goals along the way. My Doctors would have liked a “goal” weight of 11st 4lb by my 50th birthday (Oct 2017). Did I achieve this? NO, but I was only a few pounds out.
But I don't see it in a negative way, I see all the positives instead. I've learnt, that for me slow and steady, will win this race. I've developed healthy habits, that suit me and my life. I move more (as much as I can), have learnt about and rebalanced my macros and seeing improved blood test results. Learnt strategies along the way, to keep me on track, even when “life” wants to get in the way. It’s all about CICO & a healthy balance. Have learnt valuable life skills and know that this time, I have the tools needed for maintenance. At the start I was borderline obese/severely obese and a UK size 22, now I'm borderline over weight/ healthy instead. Also now wearing a UK size 14 again. Most importantly I can know see an end to 30 years of dieting!
Plus I'm still 50 until October 2018, so still have time to achieve my goal weight. This week I've lost 2.5lbs and now weigh 11st 4.5lb, only 0.5 to goal. But today this so called “magic number” seems much less important. I won't stop here and I look forward to maintenance, will just see where my final weight ends!

@MegaMooseEsq
I nominated this for sticky status. With New Years resolutions approaching and so many planning on setting time limited goals, it needs to be seen that not reaching them doesn't make one a failure, and doesn't mean one should quit. Any progress, improvement, or accomplishment is just that and should be celebrated.13 -
My goal i set was 12 stone by the summer 2018 , i started late Aug at 13st 11 and i weigh in today 12st 5.6lbs thats 20lbs loss and i feel i am way ahead of schedule, a schedule ive thrown away as i feel im just gonna go with the flow and see where i end up.
I always claimed that my high end bmi weight of 11st 3 was impossible to acheive for me and my partner agreed but now i think to myself "can i ?" Who knows but im not setting a time scale, this is forever now1 -
I love hearing about everything everyone’s accomplished this year! I don’t spend much time on the success forum because the images are a little borderline for work, so this is my place to be happy for all that we’ve done in 2017. I hope everyone’s enjoying their holidays and looking forward to another trip around the sun, a little older and wiser and healthier than last year.4

I needed to see this today as I was reflecting on my past year. When I started 2017 I just wanted to not be overweight anymore...which I successfully accomplished in May/June...then I decided to reach high and drop another 10lbs to be back at my lowest pre-baby weight...this I did not accomplish, I've maintained with a slight...very slight loss since June. I have decided to focus on the goal I did accomplish and set new fitness goals for next year, not necessarily focusing on weight loss but more of a recomp to achieve the look I want1

I had a goal of running 2017 km this year. I will fall short by about 100 km.
I'm totally fine with that now, because I look back at the list of other goals I've achieved this year, and it's such an awesome list I'm embarrassed to post it, so I will just smile smugly to myself, and give this awesome thread a bump.4 -
I hope everyone is still being kind to themselves after Christmas! I'm on a diet break and have put on a couple of pounds as expected. I'm back into the 170s, which I'd really hoped I'd left behind, but so it goes. Since admitting defeat on my New Year's goal I've been focusing on a new challenge - Fitness Blender's four week body weight program. It's actually a lot of fun, but man do my shoulders ache. That said, I got a big old burn yesterday and had to eat a cheese plate for desert to make up for it. That was a real bummer, let me tell you what...4
